Valtari

Sigur Ros returned from their hiatus last year with the live album/film Inni. Now they're finally set to release an album of new material titled Valtari, which is due out on May 29 via EMI/XL. It's their first since 2008's Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. The album's lead track, "Ekki Múkk," which you can watch a grainy, minimal video of below, is one of the band's more ambient cuts, recalling the material on ( ) in texture, but is melodically more similar to the progressions Jonsi has been taking with his more recent work. According to this interview with The Wall Street Journal, we can expect the rest of the album to follow suit.

The band's only live dates at the moment are non-US festival dates in August and September, but one of those is at Osheaga in Montreal. Hopefully they'll add more as the album's release nears.

All dates, video, and Valtari tracklist below...

Ideally Central/ Prospect Park. Realistically, 3 Beacon dates.

they're playing 8 nights at MOMA. 100 tix per night available to the public; 400 tix per night being distributed through a robo-composite contest run by SVEDKA.

need to hit philly asap...been since 06 I think since they were last here

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:17 PM

I'm fine with the Beacon. I prefer to see them indoors anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:20 PM

This band absolutely, positively can do no wrong. I cannot wait til they get back to NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:21 PM

about as cool as Tenacious D.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:22 PM

did they forget they are a 4 piece band? where's the riffs guys? the RIFFS?

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:22 PM

Just puttin this out there, SOLD OUT.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:24 PM

Maybe they'll join that festival the Black Keys are playing?

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:26 PM

i have been waiting a while to see these guys, can't wait

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:26 PM

They're definitely playing Lollapalooza and probably Outside Lands before heading over to Japan for Summer Sonic. Maybe before Lolla, they'll do a smaller NYC show;)

Posted by Takk | March 26, 2012 2:30 PM

ideally outside? Seriously? The sound would be shit.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:35 PM

You don't think there's something nicer about an outdoor show on a nice night versus a show indoors you got shitty seats to? Okay.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:37 PM

I'm still waiting for an Angel Oresanz makeup date! :)

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:39 PM

All you Sigur Ros fanboys/girls are complete fucking sheep. Make up your own minds/opinions instead of following the herd. What you call "texture" I call "reverb ripping off old Mogawi and 70's krautrock records."

Jonsi is a musical fraud and just a rich 1%er scumbag, prostituting his sexuality for ca$h.

I have more respect for Beieber or Pussycat Dolls fans.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:40 PM

^^^^ must be a metal sausage fan who thinks those mickey mouse post rock bands are the be all end all of musical texture.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:49 PM

2:37 Sonically, no. And that's the draw of the band for me. I think a balcony seat at Beacon is better than the back corner of Central Park, visually. Also, my lazy self has a seat. To each his/her own...

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:51 PM

Would prefer a standing show any day. Seats are for total pusses and fat dudes. Man up and stand the fuck up.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 2:56 PM

@2:21 - FAIL. This band can do a lot that is wrong. First, they are still together. They really need to call it a day. GARBAGE. LOLZ

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 3:00 PM

2:49 must jump off a bridge if his friends tell him it's cool. BTW I hate metal.

Does anyone know an Icelandic hummus recipe? I'd like to make one in celebration of this news!

Nú víkur sögunni vestur til Breiðafjarðardala. Maður er nefndur Höskuldur. Hann var Dala-Kollsson. Móðir hans hét Þorgerður og var dóttir Þorsteins hins rauða, Ólafssonar hins hvíta, Ingjaldssonar, Helgasonar. Móðir Ingjalds var Þóra, dóttir Sigurðar orms í auga, Ragnarssonar loðbrókar. Unnur hin djúpúðga var móðir Þorsteins rauðs, dóttir Ketils flatnefs, Bjarnarsonar bunu. Höskuldur bjó á Höskuldsstöðum í Laxárdal.

Good thing I don't listen to other people's opinions on stuff like this. I enjoy SR and I'll enjoy them live when they are back here in NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 3:56 PM

Wow I didn't realize Sigur Ros was a vegan band. Cool I guess.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 4:33 PM

I would care about this if there were actually US dates

Posted by Hektor | March 26, 2012 4:49 PM

haven't seen them since the MOMA show. (Screw United Palace)

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 5:14 PM

Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.
Little bit louder now.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 5:34 PM

Screw both those shows 5;14. Manhattan Center was the show to be at last time. Much better than MOMA and well I won't even bother with United Palace

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 5:35 PM

@535 haha yea okay. pretty sure sigur ros at moma was the fucking tits

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 5:42 PM

Good live band ...sitting or standing.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 5:45 PM

Jonsi is also Lana Del Ray. SR was on hiatus while he did his thing as LDR and now that shes proved to be crap, they've gotten the band back together.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 6:02 PM

5:42 - MOMA had poor sight lines, LOTS of Chatty Kathys, and it was generally reported and agreed by the majority to be filled with the Being-Seen-At set. Manhattan Center on the other hand was universally reported and agreed as a very special show, by any standards for any band. Sorry you saw the wrong show, but that doesn't change the facts.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 9:42 PM

Whatever bro, Manhattan Center was for poser hipster trash bags from New Jersey like yourself. I was way into Sigur Ros long before they sold out, I was at their very first show on an ice floe in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, the set was seen only by me, 3 polar bears, and Bjork. Fuck all yall!

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 10:43 PM

Last time this band played an outdoor show in NY was opening for Bjork at Keyspan Park after Bonnie Prince Billy in Aug of 03.

Posted by Anonymous | March 26, 2012 11:18 PM

942 are you really trying to argue that the 400-person MOMA show had worse sight lines than the 4,000 person Manhattan Center show? i was in the front at MOMA; people were crying, not talking.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 7:32 AM

this permeates the very core of the hipster/emo sensationalist. it is, as they say, "ground zero." it's like some weird combo of a radiohead fan and an antony fan. hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 8:55 AM

Douchebag (7:32) it wasn't downstairs, it was upstairs ... FAR less than 4000 people. YOU FAIL!

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 9:06 AM

music - Manhattan Center > MOMA show but the backdrop of the MOMA show was better than the dark smokey Manhattan Center. Better lighting at MOMA also.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 9:20 AM

what's better, mustaches or beards? ironic sneakers or lumberjack boots? aviators or wayfarers? sperry, tretorn or toms?

let's get serious.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 9:36 AM

^^^bitchin sideburns, flip flops, sweet sweet transitions and again flip flops bro

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 10:07 AM

oh no @9:36, what is better is bunch of fat closeted homosexual metal head sausages internally pining for anal sex with each other. yeah, that is the best, isn't it you bleeding anus?

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 10:09 AM

bulls eye! hahaa. too easy.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 10:20 AM

10:09: Sorry to hear that you've been disillusioned from your tragedies.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 10:32 AM

7:32 speaks the truth. I was also front row and enjoyed the free booze and poster. Didn't cry, though

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 10:57 AM

@1057 moma poster was very cool. i'm gonna stop arguing with the manhattan center guy because his claims are just ridiculous. moma show had literally pitch-perfect sound, free booze, intimacy, perfect lighting and sightlines - you couldn't ask for a better sigur ros performance.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:01 AM

11:01 Not to mention it was at MOMA.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:11 AM

you are arguing over something that you have no knowledge of ... why would i expect any less on BV?

amazing your foolishness though. write back when you have actual experience on both things of which you claim one over the other.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:11 AM

@1111 i went to both shows. that's why i'm sitting here thinking you're insane; i don't see how you could have gone to both shows and thought manhattan center was better in any way. what world are you living in?

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:14 AM

I was at both MOMA and Manhattan Center and no question about it Manhattan Center was just a much better show. The ones saying MOMA were better are just tools who probably were not at Manhattan Center. In fact if i remember correctly and anyone who wants to can search this site for the actual posts that took place when the shows happened. People who were at both(and they are the only ones who can really comment here) almost uniformly said Manhattan Center was the better of the shows

End of discussion although you just have to laugh at this idiot's comment

"moma show had literally pitch-perfect sound, "

BAHAHAHAHAHA, anyone who has seen anything at MOMA knows right away what a jackass this dude is. Yeah dude pitch perfect. Bet you think the sound at Terminal 5 is glorious.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:16 AM

Thanks 11:16, one of many reporting exactly this as you point out.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:19 AM

@11:14 = Clearly did not attend both shows, and I would hazzard to guess not even a fan of the band prior to the MOMA show. I could be wrong, but I'd bet $100 that we have a certifiable Hipsterus Poserum sighting here.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:21 AM

You're all a bunch of ponies. This is the dumbest argument

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 11:58 AM

i don't know what is worse: two SR fans having a hipster cooler than thou ego battle inthe comments about two horrible shows, or five years from now when they both deny their fandom to win more cred with their suburban neighbors. 1%er shzit. lamestreamerzzzzz

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 12:06 PM

white people problems

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 2:10 PM

i'm a pony! i'm a pony!

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 3:23 PM

I WAS FUCKING BORN IN THE MANHATTAN CENTER AND MY SION WAS CONCEIVED IN MOMA ... so fuck you.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 3:28 PM

12:06 i can tell you what is worse then either of those. It is the utter idiocy of people on here who think comments are only made by 1 or 2 different people. The height of stupidity i would say.

Posted by Anonymous | March 27, 2012 3:48 PM

ideally outside? Seriously? The sound would be shit.
