Levon Helm (photo by Chris La Putt)
Levon Helm

Two days ago Levon's family announced that he was in the "final stages" of a battle with cancer. Today the Times Herald-Record very, very sadly reports:

Levon Helm, Woodstock resident and drummer, the former leader of The Band, has died at age 71.

Helm died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"We lost Levon at 1:30 today surrounded by friends and family and his musicians have visited him," said Larry Campbell, Helm's longtime guitarist and band leader. "As sad as this was, it was very peaceful."

Campbell, who has played with everyone from Bob Dylan to BB King, said his greatest honor was not only helping lead Helm's band, but knowing him.

"What I'm most proud of is he called me his partner," Campbell said. "For me to arrive at a place like that with a great man like him is the ultimate."

A true great is gone. He rocked right up until the very end. Rest in Peace Levon.

They say everything can be replaced
They say every distance is not near
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say every man needs protection
They say every man must fall
So I swear I see my reflection
Someplace so high above this wall.

I see my light come shining
from the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he's not to blame
All day long I hear him shout so loud
Crying out that he was framed.

I see my light come shining
from the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

I got to see Levon perform a few years ago and his daughter's band, Ollabelle, was the opener. I can only imagine how proud Levon must've been to raise such a talented daughter to carry on the family's musical roots. RIP Levon, your songs have provided countless memories for millions of fans.

RIP Levon. I was fortunate enough to see him live. He made such an impact on my taste in music. We lost an American legend today. This Wheel's on Fire in heaven now (if you believe in heaven).

Posted by Really? | April 19, 2012 3:51 PM

Very very sad. Not only did i get to see him live a number of times i also had the good fortune to meet him twice and speak to him for a little bit about music and life. Could not have been a nicer man.

Wow, only Robbie and Garth left of one of the greatest bands ever.

I have a feeling most of the people commenting and the people who run this blog only know Levon's music from The Band and his last few records. With that i suggest you check out his earlier solo records. His self titled or with the RCO All Stars and American Son. They are all worth your time.

My wife and i got really joyful that John could complete his studies through the entire ideas he obtained in your web site. It's not at all simplistic to simply find yourself giving out guides that many some other people might have been making money from. We really consider we've got you to be grateful to because of that. These illustrations you made, the easy web site menu, the friendships you help to promote - it's got everything powerful, and it is helping our son and us imagine that this matter is interesting, which is very indispensable. Thanks for all!
