Mazzy Star/Hope Sandoval @ Coachella Week 2 (more by David Andrako)
Mazzy Star

One of my all time most anticipated reunions happened earlier this month when Mazzy Star (a band, not a person) once again took the stage six times across California (two of those times were Coachella). The touring continues this summer with a few select shows and festivals in Europe - Oya, Primavera Sound, Field Day, Optimus Alive, and Way Out West included. All dates are listed below. While we patiently await for more North American dates to be announced, let's recap what the reunion has looked (and sounded) like so far.

To quote Wikipedia, "On October 12, 2011, [it was] confirmed the duo would release their first new material in fifteen years later that same month. The double a-sided single 'Common Burn/'Lay Myself Down' was released digitally on October 31, 2011. A limited edition blue-coloured 7" vinyl was also announced for release on November 8, though a manufacturing delay resulted in its release being pushed back to January 24, 2012. Their fourth studio album is expected to be released in the latter half of 2012, following completion of a tour earlier in the year."

The first live show was April 6th in Petaluma, CA, and the live lineup for all six shows has been primary Mazzy Star writer, producer and band member David Roback along with vocalist Hope Sandoval, original keyboardist Suki Ewers, original drummer Keith Mitchell, and two more touring musicians playing bass and guitar: Paul McQuillan and Colm Ó Cíosóig. You also know Colm as the drummer of My Bloody Valentine and 1/2 of Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions (who were active again in 2009 and 2010).

The setlists were very similar at all the shows and ranged between 9 songs (Coachella week one) to 12 songs (Sacramento and Santa Cruz). The setlists included new/unreleased songs "Spoon" and "Flyin' Low", and every show got hit song "Fade Into You". Check out the exact setlists below.

Audio, video and pictures of the shows have been popping up, and I compiled a lot of it in this post too. Previously posted week 2 Coachella pics are HERE and week 1 Coachella pics are HERE. The rest, including bootleg links, full videos, the setlists and tour dates, below...

How do I get these bootleg files to play in my iTunes without losing my mind? Nuts!

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2012 12:39 PM

Get a download file manager like realplayer or just read the source file and cut and paste the url for the vids.

Search a bit on the net, you can find instructions on how to download these and make mp3s...

"how is Halah not in the set for these shows? baby, won't you change your mind?"

It's in the Coachella Week 2 setlist

@The person calling Mazzy Star a "one hit wonder": DUH. Most of their work isn't very radio friendly, yet it goes over very well live. I don't think they wrote pieces like "She Hangs Brightly" and "So Tonight That I Might See" with any intention that they would ever be played on the radio. The fact that they had even one radio hit is just circumstance. If you think radio hits are what make a band good, I doubt you have much in the way of music appreciation.

I was at the reunion show in Petaluma. Hella awesome!!!! So glad I got to be there for that. I flew all the way from Texas for that show and it was worth every penny it cost me.

Glad that Ghost Highway and Blue Flower made it into the sets. Definitive version of the latter...always loved that first record especially.

Although Hope as front person typically draws most attention, David's music writing, & guitar playing are an equally important reason for Mazzy Star's songs being as worthwhile as they are. One measure of a talented band is surely an ability to write consistently top quality songs & deliver them with ability. I don't know of a single weak or throwaway song Mazzy ever recorded, & they recorded many songs of equal quality to the hit "Fade Into You", imo.

Hope's a very talented singer, probably my fave ever, & has, arguably, even improved over the years, with Hope, over time, developing more subtlety & nuance than ever. (Too bad her Coachella weekend 1 set showed her having a single, unfortunate off-night, as she was singing was off-key a lot. Hope's talented with writing words too. Plus, she writes the vocal melodies, & has a rare talent for consistently writing emotive, melancholy-tinged melodies. Typically, her melodies are zingers likely to hit bulls-eyes in listeners' hearts. Paul McCartney's an example of a song writer commonly credited with having a special ear & genius for melody. Well, I say Hope does too!
Viva Mazzy Star (& Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions)!

Please change this blog. The 2nd guitarist for these shows was Paul Mitchell.

Thanks for all this great updates. I'm so excited to go the show on Sunday in Aarhus, Denmark. I'm really looking forward to hear the two new songs.
What kind of merchandise do they bring, and do they attend the audience after the show for signing materials?

Posted by Michael Jensen | August 3, 2012 6:23 AM

WHAT? No "Blue Light"? But that's their most phenomenal song ever. I can't believe they're coming back. How wonderful.

So, uh, whatever happened to that new record?

Posted by Mike Keane | February 6, 2013 12:15 PM

Hope's singing is not up to par as it was during the 90's, but that may be due to aging of the vocal cords. She cannot not seem to hold a note as long nor as smoothly as she did when she was in 20 years ago. Nevertheless, it was and still is a worthy effort. Mazzy Star has always been and will probably always be my favorite band. And, despite the years gone by, she still exudes sexiness like no other woman that I have known nor met.
