Of Montreal @ Webster Hall - 3/31/2012

Like they did on Friday, Of Montreal headlined Webster Hall on Saturday night (3/31), but this time with a different set of openers including the super talented and humble, but a bit mismatched Loney Dear, who had some trouble keeping the large crowd's attention. Probably not the best idea to put a singer-songwriter on right before an energetic band like Of Montreal. Kishi Bashi's opening set of vocal and violin looping went over a bit better.
If you compare the written setlist from Friday with Saturday's (below), you'll see Kevin Barnes & company mixed it up a bit to the benefit of people who went both nights.
Of Montreal's tour continues to Boston tonight. More pictures from Saturday in NYC, below...

Heard Kishi Bushi hair rocked the house really setting the tone for the gay Flaming Lips cover band.

You know I really used to like them. It's too bad they haven't put out a good record in over 5 years. Looks like they're spending too much time these days thinking up goofy stage theatrics than writing hooks.

I wish they would fetishize the archetype a bit more. Instead, they just treated me like a tourist. This is a fun band when they play the funk (much of it released in the last five years BTW), but they played a lot of their psychedelic and synth-poppy new wave music Saturday. Disappointing.

The show is really fantastic. It is a celebration of old school rap and the new rap which is borderline to being pop. I wish I can attend more shows like this one. You don't see often Snoop and 50 on the stage together.
