Refused @ Coachella 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Refused

One day before Coachella on Friday, the reunited Refused played a warm up show at the Glass House in Pomona, CA. At that more-intimate show, their first US show in fourteen years (but not their first reunion show), they played fourteen songs which is only one more than they played the next night to a giant crowd at the desert festival. OC Weekly was at the smaller gig:

"Introduced by foreboding background music that sent anticipation skyrocketing and lights perfectly set for an intimate rock 'n' roll show, Refused hit the stage to anxious claps and a powerfully active crowd. Beginning with "The Shape of Punk to Come" and the drum beat backed proclamation "Hey baby you never felt this good," the long awaited veterans set their sights and sharpened teeth on Pomona. Following this was another one of the band's beloved favorites, "The Refused Party Program," which transitioned itself perfectly to a twenty twelve live setting. In those first initial torrents of songs being performed, Lyxzen's energy expenditures were left without a penny unspent and the band's vise-tightened stranglehold on the fans and speakers was indestructible. "
Refused will now hang out in California and play San Francisco and then Coachella again next weekend before heading to NYC for two sold out shows at Terminal 5. They then return to North America for more touring over the summer with Off!. Tickets for the Brooklyn show at Williamsburg Park are still on sale.

You saw pictures from Coachella. Check out some live videos along with the setlists from both California shows so far, below...

Still amazed that people like/liked this band. I saw them a bunch of times when they were 'hardcore' and on a bunch of bills. Used to get laughed off the stage, once a bunch of people threw ikea swedish meatballs at them.

Really? Laughed off the stage? I doubt that.

This band sucked up until the Shape of Punk to Come.

Was at Coachella. Refused were miserable trash. I walked off to the dance tent and rubbed against cold wet girls in bikinis.

nazi music.

This was my favorite band in high school and they got me into reading a lot of political theory. They were heavily influenced by the Situationist International, whom believe art should create something new and not just be a commodified experienced. This leftist thinking was something at the heart of punk rock and they really captured the Shape of Punk to come. Punk rock and electronic music were two elements not to be mixed, but Refused did it years before Steve Akoi or Bloody Beetroots. Techno faded and punk rock went pop. That Refused CD I had was made into numerous copies over years. Everyone introduced to this band could not believe they were dead since 1998.They were so original and felt as if their songs could be the soundtrack for a revolution. This was and will always be one of the coolest fucking bands to ever exist.

Nazi music what a fucking moron! Sweden is not Germany. I hope your parents have an educational trust fund set up for you.

Wow, CLAY AIKEN sings for the Refused now!

CRAZY!

I think this music is so popular cause it was something edgy and right before 9/11. It was cool to be rebel in a world not so dangerous. Now it's risky

"I think this music is so popular cause it was something edgy and right before 9/11. It was cool to be rebel in a world not so dangerous. Now it's risky"-- this is a great observation

This band is like Nation of Ulysses without a sense of humor.

A politically radical band playing the commercial music festival circuit, The Refused should have stayed broken up and just let Anti-Flag do this shit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2012 10:45 PM

Word 10:45pm and oh please, Steve. This band is as revolutionary as Green Day, sucking major corporate dick (Coachella, Bowery Presents etc.)

'Sad thing about this band is it shows all the people who don't support today's hardcore punk cuz they've sold out Terminal 5 twice yet bands just as good as or better than them are playing to crowds a fraction of the size.

That's cause Refused fans are by and large pretentious, trendy I only come out for Refused poseurs too good to give new, current bands a chance. Refused was one of them once ya know.

Ceremony's opening one T5 show cuz they're on Matador Records and Cerebral Ballzy is opening the other T5 show cuz they're on Time Warner-owned Adult Swim Records and booked by The Agency Group. Total big business/music industry bullshit.

Enjoy the most overrated band to come out of the hardcore scene after Converge.

12:22 is in a new band that isn't getting a lot of love. Sorry man.

Came here for Clay Aiken and Kevin Bacon comments, left satisfied

"The Shape of Punk to come" was great in its time. Now it's just an anachronism. Go celebrate that if you like.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2012 8:52 AM

12:22 hates success. converge still going strong year after year and all this dude can do is call them posers when he was moshing to the saddest day five years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2012 10:52 AM

@12:22am

Saw refused twice on their last U.S. tour in 1998. Have yet to ever see another hc/punk band come close to that level of performance.

Get better and make something interesting and soon enough some folks will like your band, too.

comoparing refused and anti-flag is like comparing ODB and kd lang. fail.

I knew about the reunion, no one told me Jon bon jovi was filling in on vocals

The Shape of Punk to Come is an undeniably great hardcore album, perhaps the best one released in the late 90s. It's not overrated and fans of the album aren't pretentious for saying it's an important album. Just admit when you're wrong, it's not a big deal
