Peoples Temple

The Peoples Temple are on tour and make their NYC debut tonight (4/6) at Death by Audio with Apache Dropout, Yellow Dogs and Dead Sands. The band's Sons of Stone made my Favorite Albums of 2012 list, where I wrote this:

For those who long for the days when Anton Newcombe wrote catchy psych pop instead of plodding through the haze for eight minutes at a stretch might want to check out Lansing, Michigan's Peoples Temple. Not only do they share a proclivity for catchy '60s-ish acid pop, their name is a reference to Jim Jones' cult. Dig.
You can download Sons of Stone's title track at the top of this post and click through for the video for "Axeman", the flyer for tonight's show, and all dates....

FINALLY!

I have every BJM record and therefore read this review with some disgust - we need a ripoff band with a ripoff name? Luckily the reviewer is incorrect and this "Axeman" song sounds nothing like any BJM song I can think of. So it's only a ripoff name/concept, which without the humor lands solely in tastelessness rather than irony.

I don't have any BJM record and enjoy this band regardless.

@ 4:03 ^^ puts the BJ in BJM

good one

I like how that review ends in the word "dig".

I will now compose a similar sentence that ends in the word "dig". Here you go...

There is a hummus platter in the kitchen, and here is a pita triangle. Dig.

@4:03 is right, because the BJM never ripped off *anybody*

Brian Jonestown Massacre plainly referenced bands & people they were going to do a ode to by name checking them almost blatantly with a play on words in titles.

I agreee with 4:04 PM this song sounds nothing like BJM and this reviewer should really educate himself before making cheap snarky statements. This kind've lazy, hollow criticism is why no one gives a shit about music journalism these days. Hozac is awesome and this band me be as well but what a bad piece of writing.

^ You're not so great at this whole writing thing yerself.

Yall aint even ready for this band.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2012 6:04 PM

Just another dime a dozen band that owes much to the past but doesn't acknowledge it very much.

Posted by Anonymous | April 6, 2012 7:24 PM

@5:39 - there's a difference between band (A) having many openly referenced influences used in creative ways and band (B) saying "ummm... we're going to convince lazy 'journalists' that we're just like band (A), because we're lazy too"
