Weeknd

Hot Canadian R&B artist The Weeknd began a post-Coachella, in-demand club tour last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn (4/25). The tour now continues to DC and Boston before returning to NYC for a Manhattan show at Bowery Ballroom. How was the Brooklyn show? We don't have the setlist, but you can see what he played at Coachella, and check out a few more pictures from MHOW, below...

isn't this dude an admitted rapist?

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 2:23 AM

holy fuck!!!! The Weeknd secret show at the acheron was insane!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 3:05 AM

Bowery show on Saturday should be much better.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:02 AM

did everyone forget that this guy is a rapist, and he basically paid his way into everyone's attention? like a LDR but with added assault on women?

way to go BK... showing support to this fly by night hack? really culturally with it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:32 AM

show was incredible. the guy never raped anyone you ass

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 6:49 AM

With everyone is singing along, you couldn't hear when he was pitchy and off key.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 7:29 AM

Dude looks fat. Too many lazy weeknds

this ranks highly among shit i don't care about

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:11 AM

I seen this fat bitch getting TSA-groped at Kennedy, and they found steel nail clipper in his laptop bag. Obviously working with the terrorists.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:19 AM

denim vest=rapist

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:28 AM

This has to be one of the most overrated artist of our generation. yes saw him at coachella and wondered why teenagers love this shit...

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:38 AM

9:38 - are you REALLY surprised, given the state of music today? Come on .... Grimes? Friends? Sleigh Bells? LDR?

I am not in the least surprised. I will give him this => no laptops, all live instruments. At least some of us get a steady gig from acts like this.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:41 AM

@941, let me break this down.

Friends = shit

Sleigh Bells = okay, but mostly shit

LDR = shit, except two songs

Grimes = 'Visions' is a GREAT album. everything else is eh.

The Weeknd = House of Balloons is a masterpiece. everything else is pretty good.

you need to actually listen to the music through and through. or else you'll be stuck listening to bands who haven't released anything relevant in 5+ years. sure you need to wade through some crap, but it's worth it when you find something actually good like grimes or the weeknd.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:46 AM

The show was great, guys. Were any of you there? It was very hard to hate. 100x better than what I saw on the Coachella livestream. The intimacy of the venue and the lighting also helped add to the mood of his catalog.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:49 AM

I've seen all the nationally touring lighting shows, and this was by far the best.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 9:53 AM

Awesome pics! Here's a nice video recap of the show as well: http://youtu.be/cCitpVrtQt0

Posted by Essex | April 26, 2012 10:07 AM

@9:41 -- there was a laptop behind the keyboard/bass player. there was a decent amount of live music but a lot of pre-recorded tracks.

Posted by derek jeter | April 26, 2012 10:17 AM

@1017 it was as live as it could possibly be. some of those sounds you can't re-create live. sure, you could have a reacTable or a minimoog or something but it just wouldn't sound as good. either that or you'd be pulling a kraftwerk with 3 ipads, at which point you might as well have the laptop.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 10:52 AM

Thanks for that video Essex 10:07. Now I don't feel so bad about missing the show. It sounds like all you could hear was the crowd screaming the lyrics out of tune.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 11:05 AM

audio was perfect last night.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 11:27 AM

The audio was terrible last night. You obviously weren't at the show.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 11:35 AM

No one noticed/cared about him singing slightly off key, because everyone was singing along.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 12:28 PM

4:32 - where are you getting the rapist thing from?

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 1:18 PM

I only listen to relevant performers, no matter how much they suck.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 1:54 PM

I can tell by that outfit the man has a 30% probability of being a hummus eater.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 2:04 PM

@ 10:52 - spot on.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 2:05 PM

so now we're stooping so low that we're falsely accusing people of being rapists? you all are basically asking for disqus.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 2:13 PM

Seriously what's the deal with all the false accusations?? Abel Tesfaye has never been convicted nor accused of rape. He also didn't pay his way to fame like LDR. He got a Drake cosign cuz they're boys and that's all it took.
He may not have the best pitch control yet, but he is definitely NOT a rapist or manufactured star.

Posted by Elijah | April 26, 2012 2:23 PM

The Weeknd is probably the least manufactured singer around right now. He released all his music for free via mixtapes on the internet, is not signed, and has no official promoter or publicist.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 2:42 PM

ha, whoever is running that brooklynvegan instagram isn't even trying. was he just lounging in the back and threw up an iphone to snap a shot without looking?

i'd gladly take his job. i got there 10 minutes before he was onstage and ended up two rows of people back.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 3:05 PM

the more i read these comments, the more i'm convinced that none of you have any idea what the hell you're talking about. the weeknd is mindless shit? his MIXTAPE was on every single magazine's 'best albums of 2011' list, and it wasn't even a fucking album. it was a mixtape.

everyone from pitchfork to NY Mag is on his dick. if you're hating, you're just doing it because you think it's cool or you haven't had the energy to listen yet.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 3:10 PM

ABEL TESFAYE IS THE MAN, CLEARLY.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 3:13 PM

"everyone from pitchfork to NY Mag is on his dick."

Exactly. Fucking fools.

Truth.

(They could also have bad taste in music and/or be smug, soulless trust fund kids)

Posted by Dog Armstrong | April 26, 2012 3:54 PM

@321 @322 you can jokingly say things like that, but when literally everyone educated in the matter disagrees with your opinion, maybe it is time to reassess your own beliefs. that's what intelligence/self-awareness/common sense/sanity is all about.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:02 PM

"if you're hating, you're just doing it because you think it's cool or you haven't had the energy to listen yet."

Yeah, because nobody could ever listen to this shit and come to the conclusion that that they don't like it.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:18 PM

4:02 - i've listened to his shit and i find it fair to middling. all the hyperbole is not warranted imo. i understand if you think you're experiencing the next big thing head on, though. i was young once, too.

no, they're not.

"i've listened to his shit and i find it fair to middling. all the hyperbole is not warranted imo. i understand if you think you're experiencing the next big thing head on, though. i was young once, too."

THAT is the typical response of a troll trying to sound like he/she is educated in the matter. Name and dissect a song. Give an artist-specific analysis. "He sucked at Coachella" isn't going to cut it, because all that proves is that you know how to react negatively to things you have experienced in your periphery.

And don't give me the bullshit "I was there. He sounded decent, it was okay at best. The sound wasn't bad, it just wasn't great. He sounded pitchy half the time." That's also crap. You weren't there, you're just recycling random pseudo-facts from other trolls.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:26 PM

YOU DON'T KNOWWWWWW WHAT'S IN STOREEEEE / BUT YOU KNOWWWW WHAT YOU'RE HERE FORRRRR

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:57 PM

4:26 - So, my opinion isn't valid until I do the assignment you just set out and realize you are right and I am wrong?

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 4:59 PM

@459 if providing an artist-specific analysis, citing song names and making a detailed criticism is such a chore for you, maybe you should just shut up. it would be better than your vague comments that essentially prove you don't know what you're talking about.

the point is that you don't even have an opinion. you're a jackass.

my assignment was to give specificity to your criticism; prove you have actually listened and give evidence of such. i'm fine if you don't like the album, but i can tell you haven't listened.

and yes, i'm prepared for your short 'i have listened, and it isn't great' response. troll off

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 5:04 PM

"the point is that you don't even have an opinion. you're a jackass."

Describes 99.9999% of comments on this blog. Random senseless hate spewed by people at computers.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 5:07 PM

5:04 - You are so insanely fanatical about this shit your opinion is worthless.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 5:16 PM

For fans of Passion Pit.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 5:52 PM

5:04 is basically the only person making a reasoned argument on here, and he's getting called "insanely fanatical" for doing so.

(Apparently understanding the notion of "supporting evidence" makes you fanatical. And no, I'm not the same person.)

There is no doubt in my mind that 5:04 is right -- the people writing off The Weeknd without any specific basis have probably listened to 1 or 2 tracks at best.

4:02 and 5:52 (Passion Pit? Hipster please.) want so badly to believe that the fans of this music are mindless party kids who will "know better" some day. We're not talking about Skrillex or Dan Deacon here... this is one of the most talented vocalists I have ever heard (confirmed last night) making innovative and exceptionally produced R&B music. If you disagree with that, stop forming your opinion from the 30 seconds you watched of the "House of Balloons" YouTube video and give his most recent "Echoes of Silence" album a complete and honest listen.

(And yes, I have heard his horrible out-of-tune Coachella performance. But I also know there's a big fucking difference between singing naturally and singing with an in-ear monitor on stage over ridiculously loud bass. I was at the show last night, and the kid has undeniable and crazy amounts of vocal talent. He's only been doing this for a few months and he'll figure the live singing out soon enough -- I was there last night and he's already doing MUCH better than the Coachella performance)

Posted by Dog Armstrong | April 26, 2012 6:23 PM

...and now I'm just going to get torn up for repeating "I was there last night"... this is what I get for not having a BV comment proofreader. c'est la vie!

Posted by Dog Armstrong | April 26, 2012 6:25 PM

Dog Armstrong, I feel sorry for you. I really do. Not joking, Dog.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 6:32 PM

Posted by Dog Armstrong | April 26, 2012 6:41 PM

I'm gonna write out my argument on BV comments cause I'm that important and I know you're going to read it.

Posted by Jake | April 26, 2012 6:47 PM

Guys, if this is what you dig, fine. I listened to a few songs and I could tell it's not my thing. I don't need to listen to the whole album to see if my initial response will change. You guys who keep defending this stuff are coming off as the biggest assholes in here because you are so insistent that you are right and anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | April 26, 2012 6:57 PM

Nobody has a problem with people who don't prefer this or any other type of music. The problem is the people saying something is garbage when it clearly isn't, or saying that the overwhelming critical praise is unfounded without providing reasons WHY. Mostly the problem is I hate hipsters and their bullshit vanity opinions.

Well, anyway, this has been fun guys! Especially the whole fabricated Abel rape rumor, but I will now resume living my actual life.

Posted by Dog Armstrong | April 26, 2012 7:14 PM

It's garbage cause it sounds like derivative simple minded SHIT.

6:23 - Part of the problem is that most decent performers work out their imperfections (vocally and otherwise) before they get internationally recognized. (Un)fortunately for him, his mixtapes were that good, that he was thrust into the spotlight too quick and didn't get the chance to hone his live chops in time.

Posted by Anonymous | April 27, 2012 3:44 PM

can someone confirm this 'admitted rapist' thing? I can't find anything about it and would also posit the idea that it never really happened.

Posted by jordon | August 1, 2013 7:07 PM

I've been searching for a some good new r&b music. Miguel decent, tons of potential, I think he'll continue to get better. Justin Timberlake, continues to get better. Thicke is losing his way, becoming too pop. Van Hunt's first release was awesome, since then he's gotten a little too experimental. Anthony Hamilton, has some great tunes, but isn't consistent. Prince can still make some nice R&B from time to time. The Weeknd, I bought into the hype. This dude is horrible. He offers no variety in his key. Little variety in his subject matter. Each song seems like part of the previous song. Just one looong song. His lyrics are freaking horrible, he never has wisdom in his lyrics, he never has a cool, unique way of phrasing anything, anything worth remembering. He's extremely limited is subject matter and variation of delivery. Considering just throwing his cd away, well, I'll give it to someone.
