Kickstarter

Amanda Palmer's Kickstarter is up to $683,225 which is about $250,000 more than last time we mentioned it which was before her upcoming Brooklyn show quickly sold out. One person spent $10,000 which gets them dinner with Amanda who will also paint them naked (if they want) (they get naked, not her) (well, you never know).

Punk Island isn't doing so well. The free, multi-stage Governors Island fest has only raised $20 so far on their Kickstarter. Both $10 backers will receive a 1 inch button. That said, the fest is also raising money for itself via other means.

In related news, Amanda appears on the new "Music For Occupy" album that Michael Moore also sings on.

Amanda Palmer is a joke, and everyone who donated that should feel ashamed of themselves.

Maybe if Punk Island got more than 1 band people have heard of, they'd get more donations. Just a thought.

^ Seriously, thanks. So sick of her and her crazy Scientologist bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:07 PM

Paying for things isnt punk.

Sneaking into shows or claiming that youre a "roadie" for your friend's shitty band, is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:07 PM

Amanda who?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:10 PM

Seriously, the fact that her Kickstarter raised that much money and that the Music Hall of Williamsburg show sold out is really making me question life itself. Are people really this stupid and have this much bad taste?

Not that i believe the show is sold out for even a second. More BP shenanigans of course. You will see many tickets available for this show. Still though, you got to question everything you thought was true when you see something like this.

Someone start a kickstarter to get this bitch some eyebrows.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:17 PM

1:17 why exactly is Amanda Palmer a bitch?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:19 PM

I really don't care what other people do with their own money, but that's probably why I'm not a stupid Occupy scrunt.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:20 PM

Who is the better singer? Amanda Palmer...or Michael Moore?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:21 PM

In all seriousness, I'd like to gather your opinions about Kickstarter. I am torn and don't have a proper stance on the mentioned issue. On one hand you are helping someone out, but on the other hand your money can go to a much worthier cause.

You can assist a band you like get back on the road after their van lost 2 wheels in Ohama or....you can feed families in war-torn areas that have no other means of supporting themselves.

Overall, Kickstarter seems like a good concept but I feel that your money could first go to more severe situations than making sure entertainers can properly perform.

Just my 2 cents and in no way telling others what to do with their paychecks. You were capable enought to have earned it, you are capable enough to decide how to spend it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:22 PM

1:19 because she drew her eyebrows in with a sharpie. That's bitch shit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:22 PM

This kind of shit makes me not want to wake up in the morning.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:25 PM

1:22 I am surprised that your parents allow you to be on the internet unsupervised.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:27 PM

ooh, yeah. kick start my heart. give it a start. ooh, yeah.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:28 PM

The future of music is 11 X 17 sheets of paper?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:33 PM

Has anyone else seen that Kickstarter page for Deakin (of Animal Collective) that has all the angry comments from people who never received their prizes? It's pretty weird

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:42 PM

what ever happened with all that silent barn money?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:47 PM

This bitch should die. Kickstart my foot up her asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 1:54 PM

Maybe she should give some of that money to the Silent Barn and Cake Shop.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:09 PM

what a cunt

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:15 PM

Nobody ever lost a dollar by underestimating the taste of the American public - PT Barnum

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:16 PM

Take one a look at that Punk Island Kickstarter and you'll get your answer.

They're asking for $100 for a t-shirt, $150 for a hoodie, $200 for a poster plus t-shirt. or you can pledge $500-$100 and get a 'surprise gift to be announced soon!'

It's idiotic.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:18 PM

PT Barnum is dead, what's your f-cking point?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:18 PM

People aren't donating the money to her. They're basically just pre-ordering her album. People give to Kickstarter campaign to buy the thing they're raising money for, not as charity.

All it really proves though is that if you've already used the music industry to get famous, then you don't need them anymore. It means nothing to independent artists.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:19 PM

@219 tell that to the guy who's spending ten grand to have her paint him naked.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:23 PM

The Scientologists can't get this bitch some eyebrows?

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 2:42 PM

Perhaps she should just be a professional kickstarter fundraiser.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 3:23 PM

oh 218, the dead have many points

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 3:29 PM

Has anyone ever seen a Kickstart-funded project that actually met or exceed quality expectations?

Posted by Sukit Beyoch ® | May 15, 2012 3:32 PM

@ 1:22, I totally feel you. I feel like a part of me is like yeah, support bands organically but then I think of giving money to someone like this who is probably pretty well off (we know her husband is) and could probably plan a tour and I wonder where the $$ is going to? What about giving money to charities that need it and that have a worthy cause?

I think this kickstarter is especially whack. IT just doesn't seem right for this girl to have over a $500k to do with whatever she wants while there are shelters and kids that need to eat.

On a side note, her music is pretty crap.

Posted by really? | May 15, 2012 3:39 PM

i can't believe people are complaining about artists making money. i have no desire to hear her music but this is frankly ridiculous. if that many people will defacto pre-order her record through kick starter, think about how many are probably going to illegaly download it online. music doesn't just happen, it is very expensive to record and produce and she has a right to earn a living. clearly she has many fans so good for her.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 3:41 PM

If an artist is quality they deserve to make some coin. But there is the rub, no? So little quality, so much hype flying around the ether these days.

Posted by Sukit Beyoch ® | May 15, 2012 3:49 PM

i hate her for being so rich. OCCUPY AMANDA PALMER.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 3:52 PM

3:41 - yes, it costs money and time to make art, but you also don't HAVE to go live in Australia to make a record in a fancy studio with an expensive producer, etc., then ask people to pay for it after the fact. Then again, if people want to fund it, it's their problem.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 3:56 PM

i think her music is ok at best

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 5:11 PM

Nickleback is really popular, too.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 6:15 PM

wow, micheal more AND amanda palmer on the same record. with that kind of talent out there, global leftism has nothing to fear! LOL.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 6:36 PM

this is disgusting.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 7:34 PM

Surprised to see the muso lesbo scene has supporters with such deep pockets.

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 8:08 PM

^^^hehe, i like that, "deep pockets"

Posted by Anonymous | May 15, 2012 8:09 PM

if "this is the future" of music i'd better close my ears off

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2012 9:51 AM

STOP GIVING HER MONEY

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2012 1:44 PM

your opinions of her music don't matter. it IS way more punk to be poor, isn't it? However, i would think most musicians would like to live comfortably, whatever your definition of comfortable may be. she didn't need a kickstarter in the first place. she could have accomplished this very same thing without disclosing her profit by selling "name your price" on bandcamp and setting up a merch store for the bundles. she wouldn't have made as much money though, because people feel that are joining some kind of revolution by donating via this kickstarter. the money is not being swallowed up by managers and record label execs, it's being swallowed by the artist, but it's still music for profit. busking is still working for her. this may not be the future of music, but she's proven a point. i have seen other artists shut down their kickstarters after their budgets are met. the question is: do you want to limit your profit?

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2012 3:59 PM

seriously how bout a silent barn update, please. that was such a hot topic i would like an update.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2012 4:19 PM

@359 (if you can trust you will receive product) paying a buck to a kickstarter is a way for the fans to be forced into paying for music before it's leaked/downloaded for free later on.

Posted by Anonymous | May 16, 2012 4:22 PM

First, she's already stated she's not a scientologist. If you knew anything about her, or what she supports you couldn't wouldn't think it.

Second, I donated. Why? Because I've been a fan for years, and I love the idea of paying what you can (even if it's only a dollar) for her music and paying more for extra shit you want. That extra money goes towards better merch, better packaging and money for a better tour. Most of that money is going towards stuff for us, the fans.

Don't like her music? Don't listen. Dont like her kick starter ? don't donate.
Don't like her eyebrows, or lack thereof ? Dont look at the photos.

15000 of us donated. Why do you care what we do with our hard earned dollars?

It's funny how much time you took out of your day to click on an article and comment about someone you loathe/ care so little for.

Don't you have anything better to do?
