MCA

The rumors appear to be confirmed. We've lost one of our generation's musical legends and one of my personal heroes. As many are reporting and tweeting (including Russell Simmons, Questlove, TMZ and Pitchfork), Adam Yauch aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, who has been fighting cancer for a few years, passed away today at the way too young age of 47.

UPDATE: Beastie Boys issue official statement.

I never got people who cut down a dead person...even if it is a musician you don't like. Just don't say anything. By all acounts Adam was a standup guy and he did a lot for charity and Tibet so lay off the bs people.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2012 1:22 PM

Man, huge bummer. Glad I caught them at Summerstage a few years ago. Such a fun show and the guys genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. Can't imagine how devastated Mike D and Ad-Rock must be.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2012 1:33 PM

So stunned and sad..... My teenage years were heavily soundtracked by the Beastie Boys... They were so great live. So much energy and so much humor. They were cruising tunes for our teenage stolen car missions. To this day, I somehow know almost word for word the Beastie Boys's catalog.

And Adam... Well, I had such a crush on Adam when I was teenager.

When I left college and settled back in NYC, I loved the fact I lived in the same neighborhood with MCA. He was such a nice guy. Always smiled..... I would always see him walking with his wife and daughter. Hand in hand.....They seemed like a very happy family.

I also would always catch him in Union Square at the matinees alone sitting in the dark. Besides music and his family, movies seemed to be his other passion.

He was so young. I was hoping he would get better. How utterly sad!

RIP MCA - Time to pass the Mic...

Rest in peace bro !!!

Posted by Rick L | May 4, 2012 2:09 PM

When I was in high school, the Beasties epitomized cool for me. Seriously, I thought everything they did was so effing cool! I saw them live many times over the years and still know almost all of their lyrics by heart. I wrote a college term paper about the political situation in Tibet and eventually traveled to Tibet a few years later. Would I have even cared about Tibet as a teenager if these 3 guys I worshipped never assisted in bringing this isssue to pop-media? Probably not.

I will be 35 years old this summer. I haven't listened to the Beastie Boys in a long time. My CD's are on a dusty shelf, my old posters are in my parents garage, and I have Licence To Ill on cassette floating around somewhere in the bottom of a closet.

The passing of MCA is pretty difficult for me to swallow. Some of my friends who I saw the Beasties with are also now departed. Moments like this, as removed as you think you are, truly make you realize your own mortality.

Even if this doesn't affect you personally on a deep level...do something nice today, help a friend in need, smile at a stranger. Life is a gift, life is fleeting, enjoy your time.

RIP MCA

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2012 2:09 PM

Tragic, truly big loss.
I consider myself lucky to have seen the Beasties many times over the years, from that show at the Capitol Theatre in NJ back in 1987 with Public Enemy and Murphy's Law, up until the T5 show in 2008. Great artist with a big heart. RIP.

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2012 2:10 PM

The type of people leaving hateful and racist comments will have no one at their respective funerals and no one will remember them or even take notice when the die. How does it feel to know that?

Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2012 3:20 PM

@304 you're essentially at a wake talking shit about the person who just died. i know that feels good for you, but realize that kind of personality flaw is something you can't hide through your entire life. it is probably why you don't have friends, and feel the need to get attention through acts like your above comments. i feel sorry for you, really, and regret whatever has led you to become one of the more horrible people on the planet at this particular moment in time. you should look in the mirror, ask how you became this way, and see if it's not too late to change.

I've found that you could be giving away $100 bills on the corner of 42nd & 5th, and you will get idiots that come by just to hurl insults at you. No true New Yorker would expect any less from some anonymous trolls posting on a publicly accessible website. Adam would know how to filter that shit out. Be like Adam, just tune it out.
