Biggie

Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) is playing the Apollo Theater on June 14 as part of the month-long Blue Note Jazz Festival (which originally announced the Mos Def show as happening on June 29). Tickets are on sale.

Today, 5/21, would have been Biggie Smalls' 40th birthday. In tribute to Biggie and Malcolm X, Yasiin Bey released a new song called "Bey", part of his continuing "Top 40 Underdog series". Hypetrack points out that the song is Bey rapping over the instrumental of Lil Tunechi's single "John (If I Die Tonight)". Listen to that, along with some just-uncovered footage of Christopher Wallace performing with Jay-Z, below...

One time Biggie walked into a Tower Records in the city and grabbed a stack of his most recent CD and proceeded to walk out the door. When management and security stopped him his response was, "I can take them because they have my face on them". He then started complaining about White people being racist. It took over ten minutes to get it through his head that he didn't have the right to just walk into a store and take things. I think the world is better off without Biggie Smalls in it.

^ That's no reason to wish someone death, but I also don't buy the hype of his greatness either.

8:33 got picked on in high school.

9:20...I didn't wish death on the guy, just making an observation that the world runs smoother without people like him in it.

9:21 likes to listen to rap because it makes him feel a little tough.
