Tom Gabel

Following in the footsteps of Life of Agony's Keith Caputo (who now goes by Mina), Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel is coming out as transgender. Rolling Stone reports:

Against Me! singer Tom Gabel reveals plans to begin living as a woman in the new issue of Rolling Stone. Gabel, who has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

Against Me! will soon hit the road with The Cult and hit Terminal 5 in NYC along the way.

Tom recently played two shows in NYC as part of the Revival Tour with Chuck Ragan and others.

Chuck Ragan's band Hot Water Music has some shows coming up and a new album.

Brave for Tom. Amazing singer songwriter. F the haters.

I read the rolling stone article and I give him a ton of credit and it is great he will live the life that was meant for him but the article says this is the first time a MAJOR ROCK STAR has come out as transgender...he is a major rock star?

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 9:11 AM

If you like Against Me!, chances are, you're transgender anyway.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 9:11 AM

fully support people doing what they want and all..

but.

isn't this going to cause a near Anne Ramsey like scenario (Mama Fratelli) with a whiskey fueled voice coming from a woman?

Good for him! Everyone deserves to live in their own realm of happiness. F--k the haters and politicians who now think he doesn't deserve equal rights with his partner. Tom is human just like you and me...and more brave than those who shield themsleves behind archaic reiligous dogma.

Btw I am 9:14 "Good for him! Everyone deserves to live in their own realm of happiness...". I seriously dislike Tom's music but that obviously holds no bearing on how I view him as a person.

fuck tom.
if you're going to say something anti-trans on here eat shit and die. also I think it's funny that people are saying they support her using male pronouns even though this article is about how she identifies as a woman.

Still a man...man. I agree. He has a mental illness that needs to be treated.

Who cares? The relevant news is that this post made me check this band out now i have to wipe fecal matter out of my ears. Maybe he (still a he until he goes under the knife) will eventually transform into a trappist monk and never subject us to his mediocrity again.

You dimwit. Go back to reading highlights magazine. So if Nature Knows best, we shouldn't try to fix any health issues like cancer or seizures. You are an idiot. I applaud Keith, to do anything like this is difficult and to make it public must be that much harder.

I had to have penis reduction surgery in order to stop ruining my women. I could have accepted 15" of black love as my destiny, but I find that life just works better for me with 12" instead. Just enough for the ladies to scream, not enough for them to cry.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 11:12 AM

I'm totally cool with gay people in every respect... cutting your penis off though is weird to me. If I accept gay people as no different from anyone else, does this mean I have to accept trans gender also?

If i had kids... I would be 100% comfortable leaving them in the care of a gay person. Someone who cuts off their penis though? Not so much... just have a bad feeling about what's going on in their head.

Clearly you have to be seriously fucked up in the head to want to chop your weiner off. That is all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 12:46 PM

^I know. Academics can make up 'gender dysphoria' or whatever, but it's just old fashioned crazy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 12:49 PM

From wiki...

"gender dysphoria" = a mentally unstable individual with sex issues who is trying to pretend he is a woman, but will always still be a man even if he foes chop his dick off.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 12:54 PM

To those who have said it is a mental illness:

Actually, it IS considered a mental illness. So was homosexuality. The current accepted 'treatment' for being transgender is in fact transitioning to the the sex of one's choice. In fact, most trans people undergo a LOT of therapy before they begin any kind of transition process.

However, many of us are trying to change this designation, because the question of civil rights should not hinge upon whether someone is 'born this way' or chooses to be so. As homosexuality was removed from the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), so will being trans. We are

There are many, many kinds of trans people. Not all of them take hormones, not all of them get surgery. Not all of them conform to gender roles. Many trans people, myself included, use gender as a marker of change, a clear way of saying, this is who I want to be, something different than before. A body is a kind of reflection of our minds, no? Lots of people modify their bodies for various reasons. Some trans people change their bodies to survive in a world that it is frankly hostile to gender nonconformity. Many trans people change their bodies after they went through puberty watching hormones, like an alien disease, ravaging their bodies and dreams, turning their own skin against them.

To those who have made comments about the link between homosexuality and being trans:

Laura Jane Grace could be considered 'gay'. Because she's married to a woman. If she liked men, she could be straight. But that's up to her to decide what to identify as sexually. Though sexuality is considered a gender 'norm'. Sexuality and gender identity are not the same thing, one for one, although certainly they are related, and many trans people at the very least question their sexuality throughout the transition process.

My most sincere congratulations to Laura. There is a community out there and we love you as our sister whether or not you will end up loving us.

And to the rest of you, welcome to the 21st century, when we collectively began to support each other in living our dearest dreams.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 1:02 PM

12:49 yep, 'gender dysphoria is some bullshit. Mentally ill is more accurate.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 1:12 PM

@ 12:46 ...If you end a sentence with "That is all", I automatically think you are not very bright and spend most of your time on FB, twitter and other social media sites. You are a tool and probably a weak-minded individual who will never amount to very much. That is all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 1:26 PM

bless this HUMAN BEING.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 1:27 PM

@1:26 you are probably also one of those trans-gender mental patients and do not like hearing the facts because it disturbs your false reality of being sane. That is all.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | May 9, 2012 1:57 PM

The real mental illness is ignorance.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 2:17 PM

There were so many reasons I admired this individual. Now there are even more. Remember folks, you don't have to like a persons life choices, you don't have to agree with them, but you sure as hell have to accept that everyone does things in their life other people don't understand or agree with. As long as we all live our lives in a way that harms no other NO ONE has the right to judge.

I gotta say it is messed up when your getting all hot and heavy with a slamming chica, and then they end up pulling a 10" schlong outta that dirt dress. Sucks, man. I knew this friend that told me it happened to him. That ever happen to anyone on here?

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 3:36 PM

am i the only one who thinks this is a huge prank?

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 3:55 PM

You know, I wouldnt condemn him for his decision, I wouldnt try and deny him civil rights and I wish him the best - but I just don't believe in this. And guess what, that doesnt make me a monster, or a religious fundamentalist or a male chauvenist. I feel like we're being way too accepting of things geuininely self-destructive simply for the sake of trying to appear liberal or tolerant. I'm reminded of Gloria Steinam's quote about transsexuals "surgically mutilating their own bodies" in order to conform to a gender role that is inexorably tied to physical body parts. Even rebelling against gender roles I totally understand but going to the extreme of artifical hormones and re-assignment surgery? That doesnt feel like correcting nature, it feels like refusing to accept who you are. You can't change your chromosomes, at the end of the day its just prosthetics. Thats my two cents, hate me all you want, fuck the other people writing nasty hate-comments, but as far as I'm concerned hating everyone who disagrees with you makes you just as bad as them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 7:36 PM

4:00, you're right, it just makes you seem like someone who has unfounded, strong opinions about something they know demonstrably absolutely nothing about.

it never fails to amaze me how some people like 4:00 think that their own personal distinct lack of understanding and feeling about something they don't experience is itself proof of its non existence in every other person in the world. there has to be a word for that.. perhaps, moronic?

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 9:35 PM

^ if the shoe does not fit, must we change the foot?

If you think I'm wrong, fair enough, then tell me why, rather than simply dismissing me as a 'moron' because I dont agree with you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 9, 2012 10:53 PM

I wish you the best, Laura.

Whether anyone agrees, disapproves, doesn't understand, or just flat out doesn't care, who are we to judge. It's her body and her life, she can do whatever she wants with it and it doesn't affect us in the slightest.

Posted by Kelly | May 10, 2012 12:34 AM

That's great for Tom and all, and I'm totally for people having personal freedom, but I still think it kind of sucks for the fans, and the fact that if you say "Hey, I think it sucks Tom is going to be a woman because it will change the band that I love." without being accused of being a bigot, which has already happened to me. So yeah, good for you Tom, but in all honesty it bums me out.

Posted by Anonymous | May 10, 2012 6:28 PM

@10:53

because i am a transsexual woman just like laura, and to be frank, you have no fucking clue. Of course it's understandable that you don't, but what's not understandable is that you feel that your having no clue still comprises grounds on which to build any sort of argument as to the validity of another human identity. And on the matter of opinions, What is your background? are you a clinical psychologist? a neurologist studying the brains of gender nonconforming people? Fuck's sake. If you don't know about something but don't like it, just say you don't like it. Don't be so presumptuous as to think your meager experience and limited empathetic capacity equates to a substantial argument, as if the validity of another human's identity that happens to be different to yours could even possibly be up for argument.

you actually wrote this: 'it feels like refusing to accept who you are'.

how the FUCK do you know who Laura is? Or what she feels like? Why does it matter what it might feel like to you if you don't feel like that? And really, do you really know what the fuck you are? when you die, who are you going to be? Were you ever anything?

In answer to your question, you're wrong because no one gives a shit whether you accept her identity or not. Your opinion is simply irrelevant. Your opinion is inconsequential. To make claims about who someone is and isn't is just unbelievably presumptuous. Your meager, ignorant, disrespectful opinion is worth nothing in this wonderful, inspiring story, and it only functions to malign, hurt, and subjugate all people of transgender experience.

This is not a 'disagreement'. There is nothing to argue about. Laura Jane Grace's identity does not require your anonymous consent to have an identity.

Sure, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but really, understand that there is no argument to be had when you are discussing the validity of another human existence. Frankly, if you believe that her existence and identity are only validated through your personal, obviously privileged, myopic, single-minded dominator peephole of life experience, you're no better than a fascist.

this is real talk. own it. and back the fuck off. it's ok to start off on the wrong side of history.

Make it happen Greg!!!

Posted by D | May 12, 2012 5:32 PM

Wow. Do I need a masters in Political science or Sociology to have an opinion on politics? Do I need to join the clergy to have an opinion on a religious issue? No, and I dont need to be a neurologist to have an opinion about transgenders. And frankly, shouting me down with a trollish, ad hominem comment laced with profanity simply because someone doesnt agree with you clearly points out who the real fascist here is. Where did I say Tom/Laura needs my personal approval? Where did I say I didn't like it? But I suppose its a lot easier to just assume this all rooted in prejudice and blind hatred then someone simply shares a different belief than you, isnt it?

Theres few certainties in this world about 'who we are' from a physical or existential point of view, but I dont think its heresy to say that if you're born with a penis, erm, it probably means the dr's gonna check off the 'male' box on the medical chart. If I had my skin tone artifically darkened because I believed I was a black man trapped in a white mans body, would that make me a real black man? What if i got whiskers and stripes tattooed over my body because I believe I was a cat trapped in a human body, would that make me a cat? It sounds ludicrous, but whats the real difference?

As far as refusing to accept who you are, well, thats just really just medical fact. You can't change your chromosomes. As far as I know, according to the DSM-IV, gender dysmorphia is considered a mental disorder, and there's no real established biological proof (as of yet) to back the claim that one's mind/indentity/brain has been mistakenly placed in the wrong body. As far as gender roles are concerned, I totally get that. But gender roles are something determined by society, the idea of what is feminine and whats masculine, not nature. Where the need for surgical correction comes in baffles me, and I'll be honest about that. I dont hate Tom/Laura, (I'm using both just because it's awkward referring to him suddenly as Laura, kinda like Puff Daddy/P-Diddy thing) and I honestly hope he is happier with this life. But you cant pretend there arent those who have gone on to regret their transitions, and im not going to hide my opinions just becuase more narrow-minded people dont want to hear them.

If you want to respond, civily, I'd love to hear it. Prove me wrong! I'm sure you have read more and done more research than me. Give me some real, rational, empircal evidence or testimony for your side. But I'm not going to be silenced or intimidated by an infantile, high-school 'durr, fuck off, fascist' reply, and frankly thats not going to help ANYONE here to join your cause. Fuck, even Tom/Laura probably wouldnt have gotten THAT pissed off. Thats not real talk. Thats baby talk.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2012 9:14 PM

You go Laura Jane Grace! And to the haters and naysayers, look at the studies showing that trans people literally have the brains of the gender they feel themselves to be! If you don't get educated you may make a fool of yourself.

Posted by Jennifer | May 14, 2012 8:41 PM

9:14PM you're an idiot. Why don't YOU go do the research? They've examined transgender brains and found that the hypothalamus is the distinct size of the opposite sex (the sex they feel they are and become). They've also discovered levels of white matter in the brain that show transgendered people have the distinct brain of their chosen sex, not their sex at birth. Do the fucking research.
