Paul Weller

The concert really kicked into high gear when Weller and his band returned to the stage after the short break following the Sonik Kicks' performance for their acoustic set. They were joined again by the string section for some of the acoustic selections. In a nod to the informality of the acoustic set, Weller changed out of the suit that he'd been wearing during the Sonik Kicks portion of the show and returned to the stage in a T-shirt. The acoustic set started off with a spellbinding take on The Jam's "The Butterfly Collector." It received a big reaction from the crowd when it ended. The acoustic takes on "All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)" and "You Do Something To Me" also got big cheers from the packed house. The acoustic set was the best-sounding part of the show because, for some reason, there was a lot of distortion in the sound during the electric performances.

The main set closed out with the electric set. "From The Floorbaords Up," "Wake Up The Nation," "Foot Of The Mountain," and "Echoes Round The Sun" all got a stellar live treatment by Weller and the band. But they were saving the best for last. The closing song of the main set, "Whirlpool's End," received an absolutely blistering take by Weller and crew that left the crowd, many of them already hoarse from singing along during much of the show, roaring with approval. [Goldmine]

After an invite-only show at the John Varvatos store on Thursday, Paul Weller played two nights at the Best Buy Theater in Times Sq on Friday (5/18) and Saturday (5/19) with openers Desert Sharks. Weller performed three sets -- Sonik Kicks in full, an acoustic set backed by a string section, and then an electric set of career-spanning favorites. Weller plays Toronto tonight. The Goldmine review above is from Saturday night's show, but our pictures are from Friday night.

More pictures of Paul Weller's show (and openers Desert Sharks), and Weller's setlists for both nights, are below.

the electric set did sound weak, but I attributed that to having just left the Psychic Paramount who destroyed Le Poisson Rouge. Weller's set paled in comparison.

two great shows on two great nights! maybe a few sound issues on Friday but Saturday was PERFECT and the audience was great, really enthusiastic. any naysayers out there don't know what real music and real talent and real artistry is - Weller does, so get with the program. great photos, thanks for this post!

Hey 4:10- Why the fuck did you even go? So you could write shitty comments? Ass.

He didn't do his biggest hits Tenderness and She Drives Me Crazy? What a gyp. I'd'a walked the fuck out.

^When would you have walked out? Did you know the setlist in advance? Live shows are a crap shoot. Disappointment at not hearing your favorite songs is understandable, but your statement is idiotic.
