Spiritualized

Three or four chords, a handful of verses and a brazen guitar line are all Jason Pierce, a k a J. Spaceman, needs for songs that can heave along for a good 10 minutes without wearing out their welcome... While Mr. Pierce rasps out his vocals, the keyboards swell, backup singers deliver oohs and la-las, and guitars work themselves up toward scrabbling tremolo and feedback. Amid it all, Mr. Pierce presents himself as a disillusioned hedonist, a sufferer with himself to blame, a lost soul: alone in the vast turmoil of the music, mourning lost chances and wishing for more.

On albums like this year's Sweet Heart Sweet Light, the band's seventh in 20 years, Spiritualized deploys a large cast: strings, horns, singers, free-jazz saxophonists, all taking their place in the music's tidal crest and ebb. Onstage things were leaner, with a five-man band and two female backup singers. Yet the music grew just as colossal -- perhaps even more so, with fewer distracting details in the grand expanse. -[NY Times]

Spiritualized with special guest Nikki Lane played Terminal 5 on May 7th, part of a round of dates for Jason Pierce and the band that brought them to Chicago and sees them hit Union Transfer in Philadelphia tonight (5/11).

If you miss thje shows, look for streaming audio via NPR from Spiritualized's appearance at 9:30 Club in DC last night (5/10). Spiritualized also appeared on Letterman on May 7 (the same night as T5). Watch that, along with more pictures and the setlist from the NY show, below...

"Best Spiritualized show I personally ever seen. Epic gazing"

LOL Guffaw. How many ya been to? 1? You obviously were not at last year's Music Hall Show.

^ I was only at this one and even I could tell this was probably not their best.

I'm so sad i missed their Radio City performances last year, but nevertheless this show was amazing in my opinion.

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2012 2:53 PM

They didn't play "Electricity".

Yeah...ME2:19 is on an exaggeration roll. First the Zola Jesus crowd at the Guggenheim was the "best looking of the year, by far" according to his post in that thread and now this.

One of the most solid bands of our lives! Sure a couple weak albums but when they're on top, man they are amazing!

Are we definitely sure that this is a picture of J. Spaceman and not Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi? "It's my life, its now or never! I ain't gonna live forever!"

They are some really dubious sunglasses, although I guess I admire his commitment to them.

best Spiritualized show I've seen was late Sept 2001 at Riverside Cathedral (or whatever it's called)

Posted by Anonymous | May 11, 2012 3:34 PM

Surprised to see Jason standing for the whole show. Last few tours he has been sitting

Another great Spiritualized show although last years Radio City Show was amazing.

Amazing show. Jason was a bit hoarse but still sounded great.

I love Spiritualized (and anything Spacemen 3 related for that matter) and always will but their best shows were back in the 90s when the chick who Richard Ashcroft eventually stole from Jason was still in the band.

Nikki Lane should be playing Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner's Daughter on Broadway instead of Z. Deschanel.
