"AT THE THAT DOG REUNION SHOW OMG THEY ARE THE BEST!!!!" - @cassieramone

that dog mhow

As mentioned before, it's 90's Week in NYC, with Garbarge and Afghan Whigs making big returns to the stage and the flannel-era hat trick was completed last night at Music Hall of Williamsburg with alt-rockers that dog. I was never a giant fan, but I knew more songs that I thought I would, and the band sounded great, nailing those close, three part harmonies -- and Petra Haden's violin is still a force. The crowd was really singing along and that dog. were in great spirits too, especially bassist Rachel Haden and drummer Tony Maxwell who both cracked jokes the whole night. Anna Waronker was her sarcastic self too, though tempered a bit by motherhood, cutely saying hi to her baby in the balcony between songs. An extended, five-song encore brought the set to 22 songs, about an hour and a half. The crowd really didn't want it to end.

Of course, they can go to see that dog play again tonight (5/25) at MHoW -- tickets are still available.

Speaking of cracking jokes, ex-SNL castmember (and ex- Petra Hayden bf) Fred Armisen opened the show with a loose, very funny, music-based set, where he did impressions of Elvis Costello, a man at a doo-wop concert in the '50s, and some audience participation too, some of it unwanted. Kurt Braunohler opens tonight's show.

that dog.'s MHoW setlist is below.

it's "shite" because idiots thought they would make a killing off of it on the secondary market? the band is still good.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 9:55 AM

@955 i wasn't implying that the band is shit. i just use the word 'shite' extremely liberally. zero sarcasm.

Tanya Haden > Petra Haden > Rachel Haden

It was so nice to be in a crowd of people who don't act like Brooklyn Vegan commenters. Really was a great show.

Who?

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 10:33 AM

10:30, go back to drawing covers for your Godspeed bootlegs.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 10:39 AM

^go back to Silverlake in 1994.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 10:48 AM

^ Certainly more honorable than being anywhere near this travesty of an event. The horror!

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 10:49 AM

^oh I know. Who is the audience for this. Nostalgic 40 years old dorks, reminiscing about a band that never mattered? Armisen relatives? I guess there was a reason the tickets were going for $2.

"Who is the audience for this. Nostalgic 40 years old dorks"

If the audience is 40 year olds, why are the pictures using some type of hipster image filter. Isn't that fad for 20-somethings?

I lived in Silverlake in 1994. I remember thinking in 1994 "that dog"... cute music. Then thinking in 1995 "that dog"... cute to look at in Jabberjaw or SPaceland. Then 1996 thinking "ok, enough."

I was in my 20's in the 90's, and I never got 'that dog'. I just assumed that people liked them because their label hyped them, because Anna's dad is a big major label executive.

Posted by Anonymous | May 25, 2012 12:56 PM

If it weren't for thier major label connections. no one would have ever have heard of them beyond their local area.

That Dog was pretty cool way back in the mid 90's. I don't mind them as long as they only play a couple shows every 15 years, but this music is dated. The real talent though (and best voice in the band by far) is Petra Haden.... Without Petra Haden they are nothing. Fred Armisen was awful as ever and should get another line of work.

at 8:47 - I couldn't agree more that Petra is the most talented of the bunch, and wonder why she even wastes her time with a silly band like That Dog. She should at least be the lead singer. It's impossible to take seriously - 40 something women singing these songs. Especially someone of Petra's caliber. I don't get it.

A good insight and ideas.. I will use it in my article. You’ve obviously spent a lot of time on this. Congratulations!
