"Amazed Afghan Whigs asked me to sit in tonight with them on @latenightjimmy" - Questlove

Afghan Whigs

The Afghan Whigs, who were just announced on the Austin City Limits fest lineup released a new song to their website and play their first full show in 13 years tonight at Bowery Ballroom (5/23). Last night they performed the new song, which is actually a cover of Marie "Queenie" Lyons' "See and Don't See" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. You can watch their performance of that and the web-exclusive "I'm Her Slave" and a couple classic Whigs videos, below.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:18 PM

I dunno they sounded pretty tight on I'm Her Slave. I was expecting a bit more missed cues but they are right there. Nice to see.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:19 PM

Nice pic QL - get a close up of the only non-original member. You should have known that, seeing as you are all "amazed" and all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:22 PM

Check out those snappy new matching white Mesas!

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:32 PM

yeah 1:22, he shoulda like, jumped in front of the cameras and snapped a photo of Dulli with his iPhone

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:40 PM

If you ever thought there was anything in the world a commenter couldn't hate on, please see 1:22.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:57 PM

Questlove - that is because middle age white people like shitty rap music.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 1:59 PM

1:57 you obviously have not read many posts on Brooklyn Vegan. People routinely complain about free shit, argue about totally useless shit, and call each other mean names all day long. That comment at 1:22 is pretty tame by comparison.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:07 PM

Who else got tickets for tonight? Hope it's like half full with lots of short guys in suits.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:15 PM

^ funny

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:23 PM

can the indie music industry please shove this has-been / never was band down our throats a little more?

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:27 PM

hopefully, yes

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:33 PM

this band has never been important

why waste so much time energy and money pretending they matter now?

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:38 PM

then why waste time and energy commenting on such an unimportant band? stupid is, stupid does

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:44 PM

Agreed with 2:27/2:38 100%.

There are literally dozens, hundreds of 90's era bands more worthy of rediscovery.

My memory of the Afghan Whigs was that they were always major label hacks trying to play the 120 Minutes game, and then the indie game later on. They were never of any consequence.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:44 PM

Well, 2:44... unjust promotion of an unworthy band into the "canon" of legends is worth talking about, because it leads to the exclusion of worthy bands.

On some level, history should bear out the bands that are actually exemplary... and also-rans like the Afghan Whigs should achieve the obscurity they always deserved.

It's unfortunate that the same forces that persistently kept them mentioned in the 90's - HUGE music industry promotion budgets - are once again rallying to make a new generation believe they were/are a band anyone should give a shit about.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:50 PM

All the bands you guys think deserve rediscovery probably suck.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 2:56 PM

I'm old enough to remember people pissing on Velvet Underground in the 70s, calling them many ugly names that have also since been proven utterly ridiculous. So, flame on you flamers!

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:01 PM

2:44, your memory has failed. The band was on Sub Pop before a major. Hell, you were probably still in your daddy's nutsack at that time.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:02 PM

who exactly is doing the promoting and putting money behind it? seriously - the band hasn't been around for 13 years, has no label and maybe sold a couple of hundred thousand album in total - to actually believe that there's some sort of unseen force trying to push them back into view is laughable and downright moronic - nothing wrong with hating their music but the rest of the speculation is just dumb

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:08 PM

Have any of these people who are calling Afghan Whigs "has-beens" "never-was" etc, actually SEEN them live?

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:10 PM

3:08 - the "unseen force" is called fans

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:12 PM

exactly

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:14 PM

And I love when people refer to some music as "unimportant"; which implies that "important" music exists (which to me, is an absurd notion). Music is for enjoyment. Shut the eff up and enjoy it.
BTW, Afghan Whigs is a great live band. Their recorded music doesn't do them any justice.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:14 PM

Right on, 2:56

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:14 PM

first saw them 20 years ago, at the 9:30 club in DC - real good

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 3:18 PM

Some of you geniuses need to do your homework before your run your mouth. The Afghan Whigs first album was self released followed by two on Sub Pop before they released Gentlemen on Elektra. So much for the major label posturing theory.

As far as unimportant or shitty---their catalog, especially Gentlemen, still holds up better than 90% of what was released in the 90s.

Live shows were always stellar. Saw Smashing Pumpkins open for them in '90 and Redd Kross in '94---the Whigs blew both bands off the stage.

Looking forward to tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 4:07 PM

"Important" in music is subjective, but it shouldn't be.

Truly important music is a very small category, including Bach, Beethoven, Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles.

I can't think of a single band listed in BV over the past year or so which ranks in this category (no solo McCartney doesn't count)

Having said that, Afghan Whigs are a lot of fun, and they don't need to be "important" to be awesome. Which they are IMHO.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 4:10 PM

IMHO LMAO

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 4:24 PM

Their recorded music is awesome but this band was never great live.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 6:09 PM

afghan whigs is being pushed forward right now inorder to sell ATP tickets

the saddest fact is that 20 year old college radio / blog intern types totally buy into it

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 10:05 PM

Afghan Whigs? you have got to be fucking kidding me. Can you say boring ass music industry insider band? How much more washed up can ya get

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2012 10:38 PM

AW totally fucking ruled tonight. Amazing set, not an ounce of fat. Don't be a hater. If you don't like them, go listen to your new The Drums disc.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 12:33 AM

The Whigs were tremendous tonight.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 8:34 AM

not as good as they used to perform but still they remain one of my favorite bands

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 9:08 AM

^hey for a first show off a 13 year break what did you expect..give them a few shows and they will be back to 1990's form.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 9:13 AM

Fuckin great show last night.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 10:04 AM

Greg Dulli was tremendous.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 10:29 AM

ive seen every damn reunion since the pixies in 2005ish and this was the best one by far.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 10:35 AM

Tell yer story asshole!

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 10:43 AM

Tremendous show. end of story.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 10:56 AM

2:15 yup lots of short guys with suits. That's this band's audience.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:06 AM

^ I said that selfishly not wanting to run into the whole rude dude stepping in front of you and blocking your view thing. BUT ... the crowd was pretty freaking cool, thanks in no small part to BB not overselling the show. It was packed but not so much so that you couldn't move around if said "big guy" wanted to spoil your sight line. Good show, BB!

But to your intent, yeah you seemed to know exactly what I meant. I guess it's true that assuming everyone is an asshole kind of makes you one in the process.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:10 AM

Greg Dulli lost weight. He was much fatter in the 90's.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:11 AM

Afghan Wings is R&B for indie dorks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:14 AM

11:14 - so what bands do you like? put it up or you are ignored henceforth.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:24 AM

They fucking brought it. Thanks for the set list C. Was the Love Crimes encore the Frank Ocean jam? I really can't remember except that it was good whatever it was.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:28 AM

DON' FOWGET THE AWCAHAWL OOOO BABY OOOO BABY

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:51 AM

Never buy tickets from the retarded. They always have an excuse.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 11:56 AM

11:49 = speaking of retards ...

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 12:08 PM

Greg Dulli was fat as fuck

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 12:21 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 12:31 PM

LOL "hole lot"
shur, no dowt

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 12:44 PM

I thought the show was boring. The audience didn't seem too enthusiastic either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:26 PM

Greg Dulli's voice isn't great anymore. It was a most underwhelming reunion.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:30 PM

Not as great as Pavement or Guided by Voices reunion, but it looked like they were having a great time on stage last night. I expect some ATP NJ announcement once ATP UK is over this weekend!

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:32 PM

I would like this band if I was %75 retarded and living in Ohio.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:36 PM

2:26/2:30/2:32/2:36
I'm sure you are all different people
Coincidentally trolling poorly and simultaneously
I think you actually fit your 2:36 description after all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:39 PM

Better than Guided by Voices. The Afghan Whigs are tremendous musicians. Guided by Voices are derivative fools for clueless fat people.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:39 PM

GBV are hippies, AW are not
AW for the win!

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:40 PM

It was worth $35, but not a penny more. IMHO

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:42 PM

The Whigs need to play BB kings. That's where all the REAL white soul men test their metal.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:42 PM

The Bowery Ballroom smelled like farts.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:44 PM

^ Oh! You got in! ZING

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:48 PM

Their recorded music is awesome but this band was never great live.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:48 PM

"I thought the show was boring. The audience didn't seem too enthusiastic either"

Nice try troll, you were not there. The audience was completely into it and into it

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:50 PM

This band really has their mojo working! They should pay Rib Fest next year.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:50 PM

2:50 ftw

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 2:52 PM

I spit in your beer before I gave it to you bro.

Posted by Your friend | May 24, 2012 2:54 PM

It was a underwhelming reunion for the AW. That was the general consensus. I lost interest halfway through their set.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:22 PM

The band is ok. The fans are lame. It is what it is.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:24 PM

"It was a underwhelming reunion for the AW. That was the general consensus. I lost interest halfway through their set."

HAHAHA, please show me your general consensus research thanks. Where is that? For the most part all i see here from people who actually went were overwhelming praise. Outside the venue after the show it was all smiles and people all raving about how great a show it was

Please show me this consensus you see mr Troll.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:40 PM

"Guided by Voices are derivative fools for clueless fat people."

I may be derivative and fat, but I'M NOT CLUELESS!

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:40 PM

The Afghan Whigs? Guided by Voices? Are these bands?

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:49 PM

These dudes should have Blueshammer open some dates.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:50 PM

I don't know who these trolls think they are baiting, or why they waste their time at work on this blog.

I thought the AW were tremendous! Awesome show. Greg Dulli was a bit of a douche backstage. He was complaining about the food back there, but other than that, the band was tremendous.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 3:54 PM

3:50 while Blueshammer would be an excellent choice, I think a Afghan Wings/The Growlers tour would really nail it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:02 PM

AW hater - list the bands you consider worthy of our conversation.

Failure to do so will invalidate all of your ill-informed hate. Actually, it's invalidated already. Your only remaining means to save any face is to comply with the above request. Maybe you can scavenge some self respect, but your opinion is shit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:05 PM

where there a lot of dudes wearing snakeskin boots in the house?

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:06 PM

I'm one of the many AW haters on here. Bands that great; Guided By Voices, Radiohead, The Smiths, LCD Soundsytem

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:14 PM

4:02. Deathhammer, Dishammer, or reunited Clawhammer or Demolition Hammer would be better. Maybe Hammers of Misfortune too.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:14 PM

LULZ

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:15 PM

I LOVE the Whigs, but I have to say, the Blueshammer comment is hilariously true!

LMAO

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:16 PM

4:14 is clueless.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:17 PM

Thank you 4:14 - for proving what a total clueless asshole you are. You may be dismissed now. Go play in traffic. B'bye.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:38 PM

LCD Shitsystem?

Tell me, was it hard to come out to your mom and dad? Did you dad cry or just hit you, screaming "YOU'RE NO SON OF MINE"? I'm sure that being cock-drunk has keep you busy, even as your mind has eroded from all moorings to sanity and good taste.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:40 PM

The Whigs should definitely cover Pickin' Cotton Blues. They'd kill that shit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:45 PM

"Bands that great; Guided By Voices ..."

I stopped reading there. You clearly lack the taste of a Filipino chef.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 4:49 PM

These dudes should have Blueshammer open some dates.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 6:48 PM

^ tremendous

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 6:55 PM

6:52 thanks for that. I've been thinking about that coda at the end of Miles Iz Ded all day. Pretty interplay from the 3 guitars, and Dulli singing something (what?). Anyway, a perfect way to end the whole thing. Just right.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2012 9:56 PM

This shit is fucking terrible. Afghan Whigs? You have gotta be kidding me. That sappy singer songwriter dorky boy bullshit is for pussies or people that can't hold their liquor.

Posted by Anonymous | May 26, 2012 1:12 AM

Dulli is a hummus eating man. So stop hating.

Posted by Anonymous | May 26, 2012 3:34 AM

1:12 why are you so obsessed with carrots and assholes? Is there some memory that you'd like to share with the group? It's OK, we won't judge you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 26, 2012 6:43 AM

This’s a really awesome article. I would like to appreciate your work, Thanks for sharing!

Posted by miniclip | August 29, 2012 3:59 AM
