Spiritualized

"There's a strange alchemy at work in Spiritualized, the band Jason Pierce has fronted since 1990. On its surface, the music mines many of the same themes, musical or otherwise, again and again, over and over, album after album. There's nary a Spiritualized song that doesn't touch on God, drugs, love, or typically a blurry mix of all three, while the music itself consistently recalls no less than the Velvet Underground recast as a gospel-blues outfit, amped up and dosed with melancholy..." Spiritualized will play for 2.5 hours. Get ready kids:)

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 8:20 AM

My neighbor mowed his lawn for 2.5 hours yesterday, and that was guaranteed more compelling that Spiritualized are even capable of being.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 8:35 AM

Other than Spiritualized, a truly weak night.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 8:35 AM

Death Grips > Spiritualized
True fact

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 8:37 AM

8:35: It's Monday, I doubt there's much to be expected anyway, but yeah.

2 1/2 hours? You sure?

Spiritualized was amazing tonight!! Unfortunately I didn't have all that much energy on account of not sleeping well the past week, but they managed to keep me engaged and entertained for the complete 2 and a half hours!

Things I did and didn't like

They opened with the new single which I just personally don't like, it did sounds better live, but I still did not enjoy it very much. I started to almost regret not going home to bed, then they played an amazing version of "Lord Let It Rain On Me" and completely changed my mind. From there they played songs from all over their catalog, and I started to notice everyone around me seemed even more tired than myself, especially the band. They are not a lively bunch on stage, even the tambourine shaking, pretty backup singers (that are usually there to add energy) don't do much. I don't think any of them said a word to the crowd the entire night, but what they lack in energy they make up in performance of the material. This is a band that just gets up there doesn't fuck around and plays the songs. The crowd finally got back into it after the band played a great 7 or 8 minute instrumental jam (that I didn't recognize) which segued into "Ladies and Gentlemen..." The crowd cheered as soon as the sample came on, and it was good, but I couldn't help but think the acoustic version they did at Coachella in 08 was better. Most of the crowd left after that and the set kinda started to get an almost psychedelic gospel vibe to it. More people started to leave because the pacing seemed a bit strange at this point, I remember thinking, "Do they really need three epic ballads in a row?" They drew everyone back in at the end with "Come Together". The best part of tonight by far was the encore, everyone that left early fucked up. So if you read this and go to one of these shows, don't do the same. They came back out to play "Electricity" which got what few people that had stayed moving again, and then blended "Electricity" seamlessly into "Cop Shoot Cop..." which absolutely fucking kills live. Overall, pretty good show that I would strongly recommend for even the casual fan. I hope you and your crowd are more energized than I was

9:57 is full of horse shit and was not at the show.

What a difference a venue makes

2 1/2 Hours of Spritualized=pure ear candy

2 1/2 Hours of Spiritualized in that god awful shit house=glad to be sitting out this one and the reason it is not even close to being sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 11:54 AM

^ true fans don't give a fuck where they play, they'll be there. so you have fun spanking it tonight cupcake.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 11:56 AM

1156 so you're saying if they played another show at Bowery, you would go to T5 instead? Get out of here. Real music fans know which venue will sound great and what not!

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:09 PM

Spiritalized actually sounded great last time at Terminal 5.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:09 PM

12:09, are you really that dense or are you just looking for a fight?

"if they played another show at Bowery"
They are not playing at Bowery, are they? No. Did I say anything about them playing at Bowery? No. They are playing at T5 - and real fans will be there, while you watch the "new" Two And A Half Men, justifying to yourself that your blind hatred for a venue (more on that another time) is more important than seeing a band you like. Oh, you are so principled!

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:12 PM

12:09 - most Spiritualized fans would go to both shows because they would put on a great show both nights. I've seen them at both venues and they were both amazing shows.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:15 PM

Welcome to Monday, we have 2 prized morons making comments above.

To idiot #1 at 12:12 I would be happy to take you on in a fight shithead. Name the place. Real true fans actually do the opposite. They do not want to have their experience sullied by a crap venue. With a band like Spiritualized, sound is extremely important and at Terminal fuckhole, the sound is terrible. I respect any true fan who says why would i want to get banged over the head for 2 1/2 hours in that tin can. Not worth it.
The fact that it is not sold out by a long shot(and neither was it the last time) maybe will also send a message to J that next time he comes round, try to find a better venue more suited to the sound of their music.

To idiot #2, I was at the show last time and they did not sound good there at all. It was empty and hollow. In fact it was such a let down from the night before when they played at Music Hall which was truly incredible. The difference was astounding.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:19 PM

12:15 WRONG. One show was amazing. The other was a huge letdown.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:25 PM

Spiritualized always put on a great show no matter where they play.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:34 PM

^Agreed, they put on a great show, but put on in a bad sounding venue unfortunately makes the show less than great. I mean, you know, if sound at a live concert is something important to you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:44 PM

12:19/12:44 - go be angry on in your schoolyard or something - but watch out for those lockers hee hee. Just STFU here, troll. Speaking for the world now, are we? douche.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 12:59 PM

Just because someone speaks the truth does not make them a troll. It only makes you an idiot for calling them that.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:05 PM

^ Go play in traffic you troll. I call you a troll because that's what you are. You speak no truth, you are just completely full of yourself. Arrogance does not equal truth, except for the criminally insane. Are you that, criminally insane? That will bring you profound pain and harm one day, cookie puss. For now, just go away you child.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:09 PM

LOL here's the truth - 1:05 got the shit beat out of him every day from 8th grade on, and like a puppy raised in a rough kennel he now thinks that is normal behavior. It's not normal, you are just angry. That's the truth.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:12 PM

LULZ, check out the truly angry trolls 1:09 and 1:12. They are livid!!!!. Projecting that image of what happened to you as a child, 1:12

Cheer up losers, one day you will have your revenge on everyone who slighted you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:20 PM

I'll speak for the world - Spiritualized is *SUPREMELY* overrated. They don't suck, but they are NO WHERE as awesome as some of the inbreds like 9:57 et. al.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:22 PM

^ ... say they are

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:22 PM

LOL 1:20 - wrong on all counts cupcake. If you are going to blame shift and project, at least do it more subtly. You really aren't that slick.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:25 PM

Wrong on all counts huh, 1:25? Well let's see. A band that lots of people love that does not play here that often and it is their only show in NYC. Touring behind an album which has picked up uniformly great reviews.

.......And the show is not even close to sold out not to mention the fire sale going on right now with people trying to get rid of tickets with no takers.

Yeah I guess you are right about people not caring about the venue or sound. Oh wait, you are a real fan unlike everyone else. Sorry I forgot.

Just sit in your corner 1:25 and be angry and call people wrong or trolls and not slick even.

You win my loser friend. You certainly have shown you are right.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 1:57 PM

^ haha this isn't the Feist thread Skippy.

And anyone who monitors how the secondary ticket market is performing is either a human-leach scalper or a mental patient with WAY too much time on his hands. Either way, sucks to be you 1:57 (etc.)

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:04 PM

Douchey hipsters like to think their opinion matters more than anyone else's. Probably to make up for their shitty formative years and being oversheltered by their wacko parents.

Don't give a fuck about the venue (oh! your heart breaks!), but I'ma go see them, since I've never and who knows when the next time will be.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:15 PM

Last time they played Terminal 5 they were so loud that the shittiness and echoes of the venue were not present.

What I don't get about this time around is that they didn't get booked at Webster Hall. In 2008 T5 was perhaps two-thirds full, although they had a should at the Music Hall the night before. And sadly there's not been a clamor for them.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:27 PM

I saw them open for Radiohead in 98 at Radio City...are the better now then back then?

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:28 PM

T5 is a dump, but the sound there has improved. I saw Spitiulaized once at Riverside Church many years ago and walked out because it was such a pretentious and boring show. I liked "Ladies and Gentlemen..." and was really looking forward to their performance. Never again.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:35 PM

more importantly, what time do they go on?

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 2:53 PM

T5 sound has not improved at all. Was there recently and still bad
Was at the last T5 show and will agree that it did not sound good at all
Also, the person at 2:04 who obviously is the same person who has made other comments does sound really angry.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 3:30 PM

2:53: Probably 9:00 PM (bonus points to anyone that saw what I did there). But call the Mercury Lounge, just to confirm it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 3:49 PM

3:30 you are like the homeless guy shouting at the Visitor's Center building in Columbus Circle, as the world goes by without notice. "WHA-WHA-WHUUU-WHA0WHA-WHAAAA" "What was that?" "No idea, wanna get an ice cream?" "Oh, hellz yeah!"

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 4:06 PM

4:06 I guess when you make a comment as indecipherable and inane as yours then you are perfectly able to describe how a homeless crazy person would act

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 4:16 PM

Good Dope, Good Fun

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 4:51 PM

4:16 = lame comeback. try again loser

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 5:01 PM

It's tea time for me my own ass. I'm gonna go hop on a hog and make it stamp shit.

Posted by Gurstly | May 7, 2012 5:18 PM

If two idiots are fighting in the woods, can you hear them whine and scream?

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 6:06 PM

A word of warning. Saw two shows on the tour so far. Both weren't close to being called loud. Spiritualized needs to loud live IMO. The soundman said J. wanted it quieter for his voice on this tour.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2012 6:29 PM

T5 = venue of the millennium!

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 8:31 AM

Let me fix that for you

T5=worst venue of the millennium!

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 9:03 AM

Kind of a boring show. Some nice moments, but I wish I had caught them on an earlier tour.

Oh, and the show was just under 2 hours, not 2.5. I got there a little late thinking I'd still have plenty of time, with the 2.5.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 10:17 AM

the show got a little boring in the middle, but it got amazing with "so long you pretty thing" and "come together" at the end

they could've ended on a better note... the encore of "cop shoot cop" just petered out

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 12:22 PM

^ Yeah, no kidding. I felt like dozing off in the middle of it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 12:40 PM

Jason seemed to have issues with his guitar after the noise bit of cop shoot cop - He broke a string and and then spent a long time retuning only to then have his mic screw up. It also sucks that we didn't get Electricity in the encore. Beyond that, it was a great show.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 12:42 PM

Shitty band, boring show, overrated catalog

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 12:46 PM

It seemed like even Jason was getting bored throughout the show, honestly.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 12:56 PM

I think it all stemmed back to the Green Room, where it was reported that Jason seemed to be having issues with his hummus.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2012 1:01 PM

Jason Pierce+Jarvis Cocker love the steakhouses on 8th ave!
