Amanda Palmer

In a Gowanus parking lot Thursday evening, author Neil Gaiman was standing near the adult-film star known as Stoya, discussing fundraising techniques.

Mr. Gaiman and Stoya were at an impromptu party thrown by Amanda Palmer, cult favorite singer/songwriter and Mr. Gaiman's wife, to celebrate the end of her campaign on Kickstarter, a crowd-funding website. Ms. Palmer, best known for founding cabaret punk band the Dresden Dolls, had asked for $100,000 to fund her next album, but she'd wound up raising over $1 million. Stoya, a longtime friend, will star in Ms. Palmer's next music video. [WSJ]

After her surprise Gowanus block party on Thursday (3/31), Amanda Palmer switched to rock show mode for a private loft performance for her high-level Kickstarter supporters. (She also revealed the name of her new record: Theater is Evil.) It sure looks like it was fun. See for yourself. More pictures from Amanda's loft performance are below.

This does NOT look like "fun".

It looks like some theatre folks playing an edgy role.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 2:53 PM

^Indeed. If she only needed $100K why did she keep milking her fans for $1M. She running for president?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 2:56 PM

I liked this better the first time I saw it, when it was called "shit".

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 2:57 PM

I have to ask myself; could art possibly get any better? At this point I'm sure we must be at some immeasurable apex in human progress. The sun is shining on us, you know? How could it be any better, seriously?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 3:04 PM

I don't understand the outrage about her social media entrepreneurism, but I'm all for fining anyone with painted on eyebrows $900,000

Seems pretty easy to sucker people into giving you a million dollars. Maybe I should start a Kickstarter. Or a church.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 3:52 PM

This chick is terrible. She's propped up by tech bloggers who justify piracy by claiming that artists should just use kickstarter to fund their albums.

AWFUL

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 4:04 PM

lulz at her fan-base. Womyn's Studies majors and theater gays amirite?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 4:14 PM

how OBNOXIOUS this looks. ugh.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 4:17 PM

also, the idea that someone married to Neil Gaiman needs to raise ANY $ to fund their album is disgusting. The man is loaded, and deservedly so. I understand wanting to go it your own way and not get a handout from your husband, but begging your fans is much worse.

I'm embarrassed that this clown ever played with NIN.

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2012 4:19 PM

This is about her music... And her music is really boring and has zero lasting power. That is all.

She'd better donate all but $100 K to charity. Otherwise, she is just another ugly, filthy, selfish 1%-er. (Well, she will most likely always be ugly and filthy... And her music is terrible and made for only really ugly fat girls who don't have a clue about music anyways...)

Just thought those were both lovely & needed repeating. Theres plenty of things wrong & needing repair in NYC such as the schools & hospitals closing due to the wretched mayor, but this phony art does well.

I like Amanda Palmer. Her music is a bit out there and always fun. Preferred Dresden Dolls over her solo work, but it's still good.

But damn, her fans are ugly.

COME ON MAN.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2012 11:03 AM

If this woman had more talent then these antics would be more tolerable to me. But she has none, and so this is drivel. I can't believe how easily amused people are these days to allow themselves to be conned. I guess included in this bunch is Neil Gaiman- so sad to watch him and his mid-life crisis lay out in this form. Oh, and perhaps she could buy herself some eyebrows with all that dirty money. Vile.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2012 11:39 AM

Amanda beat me up and took my lunch money.

I don't like seeing so many people having a good time.

I am bitter and want to you to feel bitter too.

No one should be allowed to have this good of a time.

Pretentious, gay friendly, arm hair, shit music.

What's not to love? her audience looks like the cast and crew of RENT.

I don't blame Neil for not funding the ugly twat's "music"

Amazing that someone could raise that much cash to make an album. Fuck. Madness. If I were into her music I sure as fuck wouldn't feel bad downloading it illegally.

Posted by Pigeon Shit | June 3, 2012 7:50 PM

Are you kidding me with that IRS comment? People need to remember these aren't donations. It's a preorder. We paid for physical things. We get our money's worth, and a lot of time and effort goes into it. Not just by her, but her team, the photographers and artists and musicians she works with.

I was at that loft party. And while yeah, there's a specific type of fan girl/boy that gravitates towards the front, there were all types of people there. Including me. I'm probably square compared to most of the people there.

I love the idea that crazy things happen at her shows. Weird people and ideas come together. It's a big love feat. People are happy to be there.

She may not be your cup of tea, or fit into your idea of a great singer. She's not perfect. She embraces it. Her lyrics and piano playing are stunning. To me, and over 24,000 other people who pledged for her. We always will.

Look up a song she did called "please drop me" on you tube. She's written plenty of blogs about trying to get dropped from her label. Do a little research before running your mouth.

She did get dropped. And she's doing even better than ever on her own terms. Just her, the music and her fans.

I don't understand why people who clearly don't like her waste so much time saying stupid shit about it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2012 9:35 PM

even if these are pre-orders she still has to report every penny she received to irs.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2012 9:44 PM

and $1million in preorders still adds up to profit that shouldb TAXED.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2012 9:45 PM

If you look on her blog there's a pretty detailed break down of every dollar and where it goes. And a q&a one where she responds about taxes.

I'm pretty sure her management and accountant take care of these sorts of things. She's not a hippie collecting coins in a tin cup.

DO research before posting.

Unless that 'detailed break-down' includes a $900,000 refund, it doesnt mean shit. Regardless of whether you like her music, the fact is she took all you naive fans for a ride, and you're too stupid to realize it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2012 10:27 AM

If its a business you pay taxes on profit, not income. If you spend $1 million on metal whistles and toss them from rooftops then you don't pay taxes. I would say Amanda Palmer (like every single other touring musician) operates as a business. That said I'm sure Amanda Palmer will pay more in taxes this year than GE will.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2012 11:42 AM

you could not have paid me to attend this

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2012 2:05 PM

I don't get it. Can't anyone with a macbook make an album in their bedroom on the cheap?

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2012 2:27 PM

10:13PM = Amanda Palmer

I'm embarrassed to admit I like the first Dresden Dolls record. I even saw them back then with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Since then it seems like it's gotten all about her ego and it's become more like Tori Amos then cabaret. As for her Kickstarter... eh, I guess fat people need idols, too.

Posted by Anonymous | June 4, 2012 4:26 PM

that seventh pic down is neil gaiman on his phone breathing heavily with a british accenr into the mic while she is killing time looking down... nice moment

Amanda Palmer’s Kickstarter campaign was funded by S.C.I.E.N.T.O.L.O.G.Y.

Amanda Palmer is a clownish, mediocre performer and an ambitious media leech; the rock version of Paris Hilton. Palmer has stated herself that she can't play, can't sing and can't act, truer words never spoken...but of course that won't stop her from contriving dopey stunts to get attention. What a sad society we live in that a vulgar and marginal performer like Palmer can get press coverage in order to prattle on about her dull and intellectually vapid philosophies. Palmer is predicable and will continue to manufacture mind-numbingly dumb songs to seek attention. Even with her stunts, no one will buy her crappy record. Palmer is from a Sea Org family and has married into Scientology elite Gaiman family. No one is listening but you clams.

Posted by dedalous | July 22, 2012 8:03 PM

Amanda PALMER'S Kickstarter campaign was a Scientology SCAM. 24000 donations which can't be verified translate to 24000 free downloads of her shitty album. That means she has 1000 actual downloads. That's why she couldn't paty musicians. The sceinos won't pay anymore. Amanda Palmer is human trash.
