John, Bob and Jason

Bob Mould has signed to Merge Records who will put out his new solo album, The Silver Age, on September 4. The album was recorded with his current band, a trio that includes Superchunk wiseass John Wurster on drums and Jason Narducy (Telekinesis, ex-Verbow) on bass and is "in the punishingly loud, melodically sparkling pop/rock vein of Sugar."

Speaking of... Merge is also reissuing the entire Sugar catalog on CD and vinyl on July 24: there's a 3-CD Copper Blue/Beaster combo that also includes all b-sides and a complete live set recording from their Chicago Metro set during their red hot, ear-piercing Summer 1992 tour. (I saw that tour, easily one of the loudest shows I've ever been to and think some of the ringing in my ears now comes from that show.) File Under Easy Listening gets a 2-CD treatment with b-sides and a 1994 tour live set. Copper Blue is one of the best albums of the '90s, so if you've missed it thus far in your life, now's your chance to get acquainted.

And with all this stuff happening, Bob is going on tour, some of which are strict Copper Blue 20th Anniversary shows. Others, like the September 7 show at Webster Hall will feature Copper Blue in full plus a set that mixes in songs from Mould's entire career -- Husker Du, solo and Sugar songs from Beaster and FUEL. No on-sale date yet for the Webster Hall show but you can keep checking Ticketmaster.

In other news, Bob Mould continues to DJ with Rich Morel as Blowoff and you can go see them spin at Highline Ballroom on June 22. Tickets are still available.

All Bob Mould and Blowoff tour dates are listed below, along with a few Sugar videos...

Copper Blue is still one of the best rock albums ever made.

4:10 is a fucking corny 19 year old from Missouri.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:15 PM

Missouri has far too much cred for 4:10.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:23 PM

They should get the iPods to open -- there is a band with a ton of diversity from one track to the next. ; )

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:46 PM

4:10 is a 43 year old posting from his moms laptop

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:46 PM

what the fuck is this YTIN.ASNIL meme other than massively stupid?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:50 PM

YTIN.ASNIL is the way of life of a group of people; culture defined.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:55 PM

What the fuck is a meme?

YTIN.ASNIL LIVES.

Posted by 4:10 | June 6, 2012 4:55 PM

At least 4:46 is legit funny.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 4:56 PM

saying that your own comment is funny isn't very funny

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:03 PM

Uh, 5:03, I am pretty sure no girl is just sitting around here waiting 10 minutes to say her own comment is funny.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:07 PM

...why not?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:10 PM

fucking bob mould!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:32 PM

How come whenever anyone says something that is actually pretty funny and then someone recognizes it, someone says it is the same person. I liked 4:46's comment!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:45 PM

^^
Says 4:46.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 5:54 PM

yeah 4:46 was lame. give it a rest

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 6:00 PM

Give 4:46 a break. He made a decent joke. I think it's funny but not hilarious, but other people like it!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 6:05 PM

Bob Mould always sucked.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 6:14 PM

Bob Mould is a proud flaming homosexual. He has sexual relations with members of his own sex.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 6:51 PM

copper blue is just the best

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 8:16 PM

4:36 is so psyched he moved to Brooklyn. It sure beat life back in Erie, PA.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 8:48 PM

Hopefully this new Mould album will finally rock all the way - that hasn't happened in full since The Last Dog and Pony Show (very underrated great album, except for the silly hiphop track.)

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 8:53 PM

Will he be reading from his book at all?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 9:00 PM

The only true meme in these parts is tan in color and has phyto nutrients.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 9:08 PM

You mean Quorn?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 9:48 PM

He won't be reading from his book during a loud full band show!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 9:52 PM

I am a liberal and will ALWAYS be a Sugar fan but I have to admit that now learning he is gay really ruins a lot of the albums for me -- the spirit is different, speaking objectively. I like the man just as much but the music has a totally different meaning. : (

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 9:59 PM

The meaning of the songs haven't changed 9:59, your homophobia just got in the way

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:04 PM

Wow 9:59 PM! Are you being a smart ass or are you serious? Pretty damn narrow minded.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:12 PM

He would really not want you to think that way.
That's part of the reason he resisted being professionally out for a long time.
True, the last few albums have been more overtly gay.
But he would never want any Husker/Sugar/pre 00's to be heard that way - he always said he wrote for everyone.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:21 PM

9:59 is totally fucking with us. Nobody can be that retarded.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:39 PM

copper blue is an ok record, but it's terribly overrated.

hardly worth all this folderol.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:44 PM

It is a great record. But it is also not as epochal as it is being made out to be now by the promo of the reissues. It may be more consistent and whole than a Zen Arcade or a New Day Rising, or even a Warehouse or Black Sheets of Rain, but it doesn't touch the visceral, emotional wallop and deep impact on the soul that all of those sprawlingly (and beautifully) imperfect classics provide.

or something like that....

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:49 PM

I don't think it was necessary to bring up but if we are going to have a serious discussion about this, I think 9:59 has a point he/she is sincerely trying to make . . . and I find myself agreeing. Whether he would like it or not, Copper Blue is always going to be seen as a "gay" record now -- fair or not. It changes the meaning. I am sure I will listen to it again but not in the same way. It's a fair point and a good one.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 10:57 PM

Sugar live = exciting and loud

Mould readings live = awkward and dull

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 11:00 PM

Aside from the Slim, what is so "gay" otherwise?
And the Slim was fictional anyway, not even one of his personal songs. If I can't change your mind - the gayness there was already in the video, not so much in the lyrics.
Big Deal!! Its about the melodies and the massive guitars anyway.

If you go this route, side two of Zen Arcade is the gayest music he ever made. And it is also the fiercest music he ever made. So....

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 11:09 PM

And as you may know in that scene in the early to mid 80' it was difficult for people to be out sometimes so although there is some good points in the previous comments its still a little sad to see the focus on that.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 11:23 PM

its brookyn vegan, it could be worse.

it could be about hummus. and someone might call him Bob Meh.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2012 11:26 PM

YTI.NASNIL IS LIFE! SPREAD HIS WORD.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 3:39 AM

Bob Mould is fine stop hating.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 3:42 AM

3:39 a.m. in the morning and still trying. What an absolute waste of space.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 9:54 AM

I saw the penultimate Husker Du show ever. I then saw Bob Mould on the Workbook tour at the Ritz. I still think that the 1st Sugar tour is a regrettable hole in my concert-going resume, and I will happily walk the fuck in when they play again.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 10:08 AM

I'm right winger and I find the idea that Mould being gay changes his music to be utterly moronic, as is asserting that being a liberal affords you some sort shield for being a buffoon. Liberal and buffoon are practically synonyms.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 10:32 AM

Eiffel Tower High is about a big hard cock

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 10:40 AM

i"ll probably go to this and walk the fuck out.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 10:56 AM

this dude should team up with rob halford, call the tour "what would judas du"

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 11:23 AM

yes I feel the same way. When Morrisey came out I had to burn all my Smiths records because every time I heard "how soon is now" all could think about is "how gay am i"?

DUDE ARE U SERIOUS 9:59? Fuck your liberal ass and get your head out of it.

Posted by the truth | June 7, 2012 11:28 AM

10:32 - Nice try. Go read your Alinsky some more, you crazy eyes leftie troll.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 11:29 AM

11:29 - LOLWUT?

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 11:41 AM

Bob Mould's new band = Jizzly Bear

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 12:08 PM

If I Cant Change Your Mind is about a guy who thinks rimjobs are gross

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 12:19 PM

Morrissey never actually declared anything.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 12:44 PM

Hoover Dam is actually about building up and delaying climax, like a sister piece to Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax, Don't Do It"

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 1:24 PM

Whichever Way the Wind Blows is now about.....

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2012 6:37 PM

Does he have any songs about dipping carrot sticks?
