Das Racist / Battles... get a leg up
Bonnaroo Day 3
Bonnaroo Day 3

While Bonnaroo's roots come from the jamband scene, the festival's outlook has grown each year. The Red Hot Chili Peppers set provided a nod from the festival's past without losing the band's foothold in the present day. In various combinations, members Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer along with touring percussionist Mauro Refosco improvised their way before returning to the next number on the setlist... Earlier in the day, HR of Bad Brains looked and acted nowhere near the part of a hardcore hero. His bandmates kept the music's mix of powerful, fast numbers with an occasional reggae cooldown. The latter style was necessary after a dust cloud erupted from the crowd moshing and bodysurfing. A pleased Flea of the Chili Peppers watched from the side of the stage. -[Jambands]
Bonnaroo 2012's third day (on June 9th) featured a trio of  headline performances including Alice Cooper, Spectrum Road (which featured John Medeski, Jack Bruce, Vernon Reid and Cindy Blackman Santana), and a "Superjam" put on by Questlove of The Roots that featured  Mr. Brown Sugar himself, D'Angelo, in his first US appearance in over ten years. The "Superjam" also featured appearances from members of The Time and Parliament-Funkadelic, who covered somgs by Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Hendrix and more across the 90 minute set. Setlist and video from that set is below.

More photos from Day 3, including Bad Brains, Das Racist, Battles, Santigold (who plays a free show in Chicago Thursday), Gary Clarke Jr., Mogwai (who performs in NYC twice this week), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice Cooper, Skrillex, Danzig Legacy (who went on an anti-photo tirade), GZA with Grupo Fantasma (who perform together in Brooklyn twice this week) and more are below. If you missed it, check out photos from Bonnaroo's first day HERE and second day HERE.

ALICE

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 5:00 PM

The only band that really matters on that list is Alice Cooper. Das Racist is such a joke. I always laugh at the people that pay $$ to see them. I will actually give a nod to the Red Hot Chili Peps for their place in music industry but let's not forget that Anthony Kedis looks like he uses a straightening iron. I'll give a nod to GZA and Mogwai. The rest suck

Posted by Really? | June 13, 2012 5:12 PM

No offense but if you're hating on Bonnaroo:
A: you've never been there
B: It's only 65% about the music.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 5:54 PM

dana distortion, you are the best.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 6:20 PM

lol, that fuckin' guy from rhcp. trucker hat, longtailed tuxedo jacket, purple under armor shirt with a greasy stain by the neck, shitty straightened hair, half shorts/pants, one gym sock, nasty mustache. what the fuck is he trying to pull off here ?

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 6:22 PM

C: the other 45% is about just chilling and dancing...and being a typical summer festival douche-bag.

Fuck Bonnaroo.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 6:29 PM

^ 35%, do your math

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 6:40 PM

Fantastic photos! Makes me wish I was there.

Posted by Carmela | June 13, 2012 6:45 PM

only 65% about the music?? ugh, so you're own of THOSE. fuck off.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 8:04 PM

The people 'rocking out' to Skrillex is the funniest thing I've seen on this site.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 8:37 PM

The only band that really matters on that list is Alice Cooper.

Posted by iraqws | June 13, 2012 8:57 PM

Battles, Mogwai, Gary Clark Jr AND Alice Cooper are all that matter.

C'mon people.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2012 10:54 PM

Gakked out bi-dudes losing their shit during skrillex is just succulent.
Yes, Alice, amen.

I have such a raging boner for Bonnaroo. That festival kicks ass and anyone saying otherwise falls into one of these categories:
1. Couldn't go and they're jealous
2. Has never been, has no idea what its about, is afraid someone might be having fun without them and they're jealous
3. Doesn't have what it takes to make it through a 4 day festival, gets tired, gets cranky, complains about everything that comes with 100,000 people living in a makeshift city. And is jealous.

That said, Chilli Peppers were fantastic (and it was really cool of them to play all those Blood Sugar Sex Magic tunes at 8am, best alarm clock ever). Skrillex, who I had no prior exposure to. Was a shit ton of fun. That kid killed it. The molly didnt make it worse... Danzig was fucking terrible. Alice Cooper, meh, I guess I can say I saw it but im not going to say it was an incredible performance. And Flogging Molly was a blast.

those alice cooper shots belong on a wall in a museum of fantastic photos. well done dana, well done.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2012 9:48 AM

music sucks

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2012 10:08 AM

Ha ha battles dont matter...never did...they have a new singer now so they matter even less then before.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2012 10:32 AM

Nice that they invited some blooch outfits to play.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2012 10:56 AM

9:46 you have far exceed my expectations of the kind of out-of-touch, self-absorbed, truly pathetic people that have invaded my city, ruined my neighborhood, and caused me to loose hope for the future of America. To state publicly that anyone that disagrees with your self-anointed opinion is just jealous of you is quite possibly the most narcissistic statement I have heard this year. I think it's fine for you to have an opinion, but don't ascribe some phantom motive to me becasue I am not distracted by flash and hype.

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2012 10:57 AM

Roo was fun, only second time there.

Skrillex was meh, Alice was great, Radiohead were awesome as expected, Mogwai really did kill (wish their set was later in the day though), Das Racist sort of sucked, oh, and the Van Halen Tribute band was probably better than current Van Halen.

As for the other filler, Ben Folds Five, Avett Brothers, Beach Boys, Phish and Big Freedia, Phantogram, Big Gigantic all put on some solid shows. Especially the Beach Boys, they really did sound great...as long as you did not see how they looked.

Whoever said 65% is about the music is an idiot. You should be there 100% for the music, but the camping, farm, illicit materials and layout make the experience more about the music than anything else. Whoever goes to just drop out for three days should save their gas and tolls and work at their local Hardees.

I heard that Danzig went after Dana for taking pictures, but she threw french onion soup in his face and he retreated.

holy shit bad brains...gak.

Posted by Anonymous | June 22, 2012 10:28 AM

All I saw, like others here, was a bunch of people excited to see Corey Feldman land safely.

I love the pictures-just scrolling through them exhausts me, as if I went...just without the wasted money, heat exhaustion, or the fires of misanthropy within' me growing to FALLING DOWN proportions...guess I'm just jealous.

Posted by 95% | July 12, 2012 5:45 PM

I love Bad Brains! 'm the Show! Will it be good? I'm sure you do! It took but now I can see Bad Brains here in São Paulo, waited long for this moment, I hope it's good, because I am very excited, as was later tale!
