Passion Pit / Kud Cudi at Governors Ball - 6/23/12
Governors Ball
Governors Ball

Governors Ball went down in Randall's Island over the weekend (6/23-6/24) with 26 bands across two stages and no overlapping sets. Day 1 was "headlined" by Passion Pit (though Kid Cudi played after them) and also included Chromeo, Major Lazer, Atmosphere, Santigold, Duck Sauce (Armand Van Helden and A-Trak), James Murphy & Pat Mahoney (Special Disco Version DJ set), and more. Probably the most anticipated set of the day was Passion Pit's, who were playing their first NYC area show in about a year and a half, and first since announcing their new album and releasing two singles from it (both of which they played). NY Times didn't seem to approve much of their set though, writing:

Saturday played out as a party punctuated by angst; there were many, many calls for putting hands in the air. Party and angst mix in Passion Pit, who work in two main modes: the shimmering anthem and the pulsating dance-pop song, both with more cryptic lyrics than might be expected. Passion Pit stacked the anthems at the beginning of the set-among them a new song, "Take a Walk," about an immigrant who finds himself financially ruined-before revving up the dance tunes. But the stage didn't add much beyond subwoofers to Passion Pit's songs; Michael Angelakos's vocals, mostly falsetto, needs studio help.
They wrote similar criticism of Kid Cudi, mentioning that he also needs the safety net of the studio, but were very positive about Day 1's selection of dance music, including Special Disco Version, Duck Sauce, and Major Lazer. What did you think? Or did you just go on the (much better day) Sunday?

Pictures from Sunday are on the way. More from Saturday below...

White girls making their daddys proud at a kid cudi show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 11:58 AM

looks like fun?

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:05 PM

Crowd looks a bit sparse.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:05 PM

Major Lazer stole the show on Saturday.

Posted by anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:11 PM

Brobible.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:11 PM

great setup and very fun day, music was def not as good as last year. kid cudi sucks, passion pit was ok, but overall good food/weather/etc. Next year needs a stronger headliner.

and no overlapping sets is a bunch of BS. totally to reduce costs. more music = more fun

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:13 PM

Special Disco Version + James Murphy DJ Sets are the biggest scams in the music industry. Bigger than live EDM.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:14 PM

Why would you not post a pic of the girl with her tits out at Major Lazer?

She stole the show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:17 PM

Kid Cudi was so fucking bad. holy shit.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:20 PM

Major Lazer fuckin ruled, as did Chromeo.

Cudi can go away already.

Fun ass day!!!! Long live 25oz cans of Foster's!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:23 PM

ML and Duck Sauce were by far the best on Saturday. The crowd big enough that it didn't feel sparse. Kid Cudi would have been better had he not opened his mouth...great band, terrible "singer/rapper".

Yesterday was decent - Modest Mouse needed a longer set and frankly should have headlined. Beck was beyond boring.

The sound on the main (Honda) stage was awesome. So, why did the sound at the second (Hype) stage suck so bad?

Kudos to the crowd - lots of partying on both days. Gotta love when they sell Fosters!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:25 PM

Modest mouse really should have played longer or played outside the radius clause like beck did.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:28 PM

THought this festival was run better than the all points west stuff.
Pretty relaxed vibe freedom to carry your beer whereever, good amount of shade and the weather was great.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:29 PM

"Beck was beyond boring."

ha, okay

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:32 PM

Googa Mooga > Governor's Ball

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:46 PM

Beck playing a load of Sea Change did not help matters as peeps were streaming for he exits before Devil's Haircut was played.

Great festival though overall - food was way above average and agree on the Fosters tankards of beer. Nice move Gov.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:48 PM

shouldn't Governer's Ball be at Governer's Island (not Randalls)? Anyway, I went on Sun. I enjoyed Fiona Apples set, first time seeing her. She did look extra thin, though. Didn't like Explosions or Modest (but maybe it's because I'm too old) Beck was very good. Festival had nice enough set up, like bus to 125th. But the food I found to be below par, taste wise. It sent me to the port-a-potties. At DMB @ Randalls last year, I thought the food was better tasting.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 12:50 PM

Where the fuck are the Modest Mouse and Beck pics?

Posted by Sam | June 25, 2012 1:00 PM

two words:

BRISKET. TACOS.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:00 PM

Beck was absolutely terrible. Passion Pit has been awful since the start - no idea who thinks they are an enjoyable act. Kid Cudi has the talent of a slightly above average high school rapper.

Modest Mouse, Explosions In The Sky and Fiona were exceptional.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:03 PM

Major Lazer stole the festival and most didn't even know who they were

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:11 PM

Glad I missed Saturday, Sunday was fun. Agree on the poor quality of sound at the Hype stage. The Cults sounded particularly bad--like a giant AM radio. Built to Spill made it work somehow in a nice set.

Fiona Apple absolutely killed. It was nice to see her in total control with an excellent band and actually enjoying herself. There was an unfortunate HVAC whooshing noise, but let's not quibble when you have a chance to see a rare talent like her for the first and maybe last time.

Stayed at Hype stage for Modest Mouse and got nice and close. Realized that while I like them, there are a lot of people who REALLY REALLY like them. It's OK to shout out lyrics when that's all Isaac Brock really does--fun scene. Beck is a pro and so talented that it was OK that his band was the from Sea Change and played lots of songs from it though it's not his strongest.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:16 PM

what was terrible about beck?

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:20 PM

@1:00PM Sam - Are you retarded? The title of the post clearly says day 1 pics. Modest Mouse & Beck played on Day 2.

@1:20PM - Beck's performance was really flat. He isn't a festival closer. Fiona would've been more appropriate, since at least she gave a shit about her set. Beck did little more than strum and mumble.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:36 PM

"what was terrible about beck?" it wasn't terrible, but they did a few songs from Sea Change, which are not as fun in concert

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:41 PM

Fiona Apple was totally fantastic, she's the real thing and made everyone else look like a bunch of amateurs.

I was up really close for Beck, and i gotta say, as much as i love his records, you can't just stick your session band onstage in front of 15,000 people and expect to kill it. The bass player seemed like he was having a good time, can't really say the same for the others. The Golden Age was played at such a comically slow tempo the i almost fell asleep. Once he started playing the "hits" it was pretty great (where its at, loser, etc) but thats more because the songs themselves are so amazing as opposed to the performance itself.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:49 PM

"The Golden Age was played at such a comically slow tempo the i almost fell asleep"

yeah, that song is so energetic on record.

idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:54 PM

Nice crowd.
T5 next time?

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 1:56 PM

LOL at anyone who sat through the 1st 5 bands or stayed for the last 2.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:01 PM

Beck's AC show was great but then again the room had great acoustics and held 700.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:05 PM

I love reading the comments for dumb worthless festivals like this. Especially for winners like this comment regarding Fiona Apple:

"but let's not quibble when you have a chance to see a rare talent like her for the first and maybe last time."

What blog do you think you are on kid? Do you even understand who the majority of people reading this blog are? It's moments like this that make me only wish this could be a live in person comment situation just so I could get the added enjoyment of laughing in these idiot's faces

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:17 PM

And it's people like you that have turned the comments section into complete shit over the past few years.
Get off your high horse douchebag.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:25 PM

At the same time, i found myself scoffing at lots of stupid conversation at the festival.

i was really excited about beck since I've been watching lots of his amazing live videos for years, but he looked bored the entire time. I don't really blame him since the crowd was pretty unresponsive, compared to Modest Mouse crowd.

Overall though, festival organizers out did themselves pretty well. Transportation and organization-wise.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:35 PM

I liked Googa Mooga. Then again, I like turtles.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:35 PM

"Get off your high horse douchebag."

More like strive to get up on this high horse you fucking stupid moron. Playing to the lowest common denominator is no longer an option.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:37 PM

Art Vs. Science killed it as they always do. Chromeo was excellent, Duck Sauce was excellent, Major Lazer was excellent (though nothing compares to their Bonnaroo show). It was my fourth time seeing Passion Pit, and they put on the same show every damn time, I'm so tired of them at this point. Cudi was awful, saw him back in '09, when he was pretty tight.

Sunday was great. Beck was my absolute favorite, honestly, even with all the hate. I was up pretty decently close and just super enjoyed it. Explosions In The Sky were incredible, as was Fiona Apple. The sound was bad at Modest Mouse, which was disappointing. Stayed far back, so I could peace early and get a good spot for Beck. Phantogram was fabulous, as well.

I think Sunday was stronger overall, but I had more fun Saturday, dancing the day away.

I think they just needed a little more shade - Sunday the shady spots were packed. I just stayed in the shady press area :)

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:41 PM

"Beck's AC show was great but then again the room had great acoustics and held 700."

Oh lord, this is the same douche who was posting comments earlier about how he got $50 dollar tickets off Ebay for this show and the room only holds 700 people. Was expecting to see his comment after the show saying how great it was. Hate to break it to this tool but many people around these parts have seen Beck in small rooms before. In fact, a friend who has seen Beck tons of times went on Saturday and said it was ok. Nothing great and the room actually is not a great sounding one even for it's size.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:41 PM

for people who went - how was Santigold? she's the only act i missed, as i was doing an interview then. pretty bummed i missed her here and at Bonnaroo (had to go to SBTRKT of course)

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:42 PM

2:41 sure douch and did your friend tell you how the crowd was on its feet all night...keep spewing your BS.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:43 PM

By the way 2:41 I saw beck at Sessions at West 54th in 97 held 250. I have seen Beck a Dozen times since then..it was a great show..BUTT hurt you couldn't afford tickets? It's ok Governors Island had great acoustics Im sure.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:44 PM

2:41, I wish i could shove icepicks in your eyes. Doesn't Z100, Wplj or Hot 97 have message boards you can post your stupid review on instead of wasting it here. Like anyone is even remotely close to thinking whatever they did this weekend could be any worse than you spending it at this piece of shit.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:46 PM

2:41 is probably the same retard who likes Roseland and thinks that is a great place to see a show

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:47 PM

oh gawd 2:41 (2) or Mr. Janes Addiction fan is grasping at straws and he is on the attack.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:50 PM

You know that these two twats arguing above are like the biggest dweebs in the world, right? You know that neither has any friends, and have not touched a female since prom (what's that, 2 years ago?).

Keep it up guys, we're all hanging on your next witty retorts!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:52 PM

^Ok Jane's Addiction fan...same story with you but you proably haven't touched a girl since Jane's Addicitons last good tour back in 85?

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:57 PM

I made the 2nd comment at 2:41 and no I don't think Roseland is a great venue. Not sure where that comment came from.

@2:50, please explain your insane comment. Jane's Addiction?

Also, to the Beck douche. I did not go to this piece of shit festival nor did I even bother to try and get tickets to AC. Laughing at you though that your criteria that the show was so amazing is that people were on their feet the whole time. NO WAY YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS! People standing on their feet the whole time for a show. Alert the media. We may have found the best show of the year.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 2:58 PM

^ welcome back, D! We missed you!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:00 PM

^For a seated venue...yes it is unusual. Doesn't happen in NYC because everyone is so jaded so shut the fuck up.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:01 PM

3:00 this pussy is afraid of Camden and the Boogey Man1 It gets better as the day goes on! You can crawl out from under your bed now!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:02 PM

3:00 = Direct hit! Post of the day! Nice one!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:03 PM

Actually 3:01 it is not that unusual. Guess you do not really go to that many concerts after all.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:05 PM

1:54 i know what The Golden Age sounds like on the record, dipshit. It was even slower than that. When most people have been standing in the sun for 8 hours, its a good way to send half the crowd streaming for the doors.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:05 PM

A summary of D:
Afraid of Camden
Likes Janes Addiciton
Thinks everyone is from Iowa
Like Roseland

D I am going to make a Eharmony profile for you..someone out there is looking for you!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:05 PM

3:05 yeah I only see 60 shows or so a year..I need to get out more..maybe I am wrong

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:06 PM

3:03 are you the ipod comment guy? Making a comment and then praising it 2 seconds later. Clever.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:07 PM

Is D The Ipod Guy too? Maybe Lin.sanity guy and hummus guy too...have you taken the train to Philly but not Camden I assume!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:08 PM

Wow 60 shows a year. Hopefully you realize that on this blog, that amount of shows a year is pretty laughable. Myself and many others who read this blog see way way more than that princess. Nothing to crow about.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:09 PM

^ok sure you do..sorry your local watering hole band doesn't cut it! I heard their Creed covers are great though!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:10 PM

The real dope who posts as D has got to be hysterically laughing when he sees all the comments that are erroneously attributed to him.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:12 PM

Beck has been phoning it in ever since that tour with the puppets.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:14 PM

Ok 3:09 list the next 10 shows you got lined up...I need a laugh!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:14 PM

3:07 gets Dumbass Of The Day award ....

(1) I am 3:03. I didn't write 3:00, but wished I did. Obviously, it was keenly insightful.

(2) 3:03-3:00= 3 minutes, not 2 seconds, Einstein. But, why let facts get in the way of a "good" story?

You can pick up your trophy over by that hole in the wall with the penis coming through.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:15 PM

Angry Beck douche is obviously sad that his 60 shows a year pronouncement fell flat.

ZING!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:24 PM

Wait a second here. Saying certain anon comments are the work of "D" is being "keenly insightful"? Ok, the level of stupidity in the comments on here have just been taken to an eve lower level.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:25 PM

Hey can those arguing put a name on their comments?
It's hard to keep score without it.
Alright, let's get it on!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:31 PM

He is keenly insightful. Jane's Addiction totally suck, regardless if they play at T5 or in your bedroom.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 3:59 PM

Talking about Jane's Addiction in a thread about Gov's Ball is being keenly insightful? Did i miss something here? How did Jane's Addiction get mixed up in all this.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 4:06 PM

Still waiting for the next 10 shows you're seeing?

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 4:16 PM

4:06 you didn't missy anything, cupcake, you're just pretending to be stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 4:17 PM

3:09 helllllllo mcfly?!

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 4:19 PM

I wonder if these stupid comments will continue on the thread for Day 2 or if there will be a whole new spectrum of stupid comments.

My bet is both.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 4:59 PM

Dude, those Brisket Tacos were insanely GREAT. Well run festival.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 5:14 PM

Guys, this is the truth - I put a schmear of jelly on my erect boner and asked my lady companion from last night to have at it. Now only was she totally into it, but she work that shit so well that I not only came 2x but when she was done my junk wasn't even sticky! That's the way you can tell a good hummer - when the jelly schmear disappears without a trace! anyway, I get hard just thinking about it today, and I thought I'd share. OK, back to your hummus and "no, you're gay" commentary.

Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2012 5:23 PM

Damn those sliders from the taco truck were good, but why did they have five guys in the truck if only two of them were working. Was slow as shit getting that food and tiring standing on that hill.

Posted by J BONE | June 25, 2012 6:24 PM

Sounds like 3:09 may see three shows a year. Can't even name the next one show he is seeing let alone 10. I wouldn't crow about that princess.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2012 7:17 AM

ha yeah 3:09 is the worst kind of poster on BV...all talk no accountability, doesn't answer questions because they are affraid they would like like an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2012 7:55 AM

Imagine how different this place would be if we weren't all anonymous..maybe we could all be friends! :)

Posted by not anonymous | June 26, 2012 8:08 AM

when someone doesn't want to answer a question on here for fear of being called out they will do one of two things. ignore the question and play dumb or say "I don't need to prove anything to you" which just proves the original posters question was valid.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2012 8:31 AM

Water stations were amazing!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2012 11:53 AM

i wanna get butt fucced by kid cudi!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2012 7:07 PM

I usually wouldn't even comment but i really think everyone should take a quick step back and realize that music is made for people to enjoy. The artists create and perform for themselves and for us to enjoy. It brings tons of people together and gives them moments to share. How about we just take every act for what it was the bad the good and the fantastic and embrace it. In the end its all good. They would want us to come together over it. thats all.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2012 12:29 AM
