Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden teamed with Alice Cooper to play Jones Beach last night (6/28), the first of two NYC area shows for the pair as part of their tour together. The bands play Newark, NJ at Prudential Center on July 2nd (tickets).

Due to traffic issues (read: getting pulled over), I missed most of Alice Cooper's set, settling into my seat in time to watch an on-stage beheading (seriously). Clad in studded leather, Cooper finished out his set with the fan favorite "School's Out" (on the last day of NYC public schools) which worked in the "Another Brick In The Wall" chorus.

Iron Maiden entered shortly therafter, performing with a large elevated section made to look like ice and mimic the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son LP background. The Maiden England tour was focused on the era, so the LP was more than adequately represented (more than half, namely, "Moonchild", "Can I Play With Madness?", "The Evil That Men Do", "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son", "The Clairvoyant") along with early favorites ("Iron Maiden") and just plain classics ("Aces High", "The Number of the Beast", "Run To The Hills", etc). Every song was accompanied by its own separate backdrop, set of pyrotechnics, and insanely-energetic Bruce Dickinson cardio workouts and costumes. Just a phenomenal set from the metal legends, but that comes as no surprise. Full setlist is below.

Iron Maiden

Lets be fair though, the show wasn't just a string of superlatives. The sound from my seat was rather abysmal (elevated at an outdoor concert, go figure) and the entire set was peppered with mini bouts of feedback. Guitarist Janick Gers seems pretty much wholly unnecessary, save for theatricality like the occaisonal guitar toss, double jump-kick, and guitar spin (his solos aren't as bountiful as either Adrian Smith or Dave Murray). And sadly, its clear that Bruce Dickinson can't hit those high notes quite as easily anymore.

Nevertheless, for one picturesque night on the shores of Long Island, Iron Maiden ruled all. And in the spirit of the Nostradamus-focused material on Seventh Son, I predict they'll rule Prudential Center too.

Pictures and setlists from Jones Beach are below.

Show was incredible. Have yet to be let down by a Maiden set; I even dig their tours when they play new stuff. Cool to hear Afraid to Shoot Strangers and The Prisoner. That never happens.

Alice is not an ideal daytime band. At all.

This is far more embarrassing than the Beach Boys show at Jones Beach.

It IS the Beach Boys at Jones Beach. Oh wait, it's not?

Posted by jdub | June 28, 2012 8:46 PM

To be fair about Bruce's voice these are particularly hard songs to sing. If you listen to the studio version of Evil That Men Do with a critical ear you can hear he's straining on the chorus. And to encore with Ace's High???? I'm glad he sounds somewhat ok. They're doing a tour right now where most of the material is right at the top of his range.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2012 9:36 PM

I'm glad I'm not the only one that has observed/taken notice that Janick appears to serve no other purpose on stage except to run around. I saw them in Atlanta, loved the show, love the band, awesome time, but I just don't get it. He did a spot solo on the Fear of the Dark tunes, the album he appeared on, and one tiny solo on maybe one of the Phantom parts and that is literally it. I could not distinguish his guitar playing, rhythm or lead, anywhere else, and it is fairly obvious through alot of it he isn't playing because his hands are nowhere near the strings. I am not a Janick hater, though. I saw them way back on the Fear of the Dark tour and he did a fantastic job in the twin guitar attack, but I just don't get his role now. Up the Irons!

Any fan of any of the trendy indie rock bands covered on this site is wasting his time making fun of Maiden. It's a totally different genre and Maiden will still be around long after whatever flavor of the week group has faded into obscurity...and there was an abundance of gorgeous women screaming along with all the male fans as well so the sausage comments are pretty tired as well.

Great band. Great show. Haters can piss off.

LOL, and yet you became bothered and discombobulated enough to write an entire paragraph back to share how your fragile feelings got butt hurt by the mean "trendy" fans.

Do you see the irony? Do you understand now?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2012 11:19 AM

Orianthi is a "killer" guitarist. Whether she "elected" to play for MJ is not important; she is a "billion dollar baby" on that guitar. Funny though, she looks "eighteen"

The hipster's desperate sausage comments are a gigantic joke for everyone else. Iron Maiden rules, always ruled and always will ruled while you will always sit in a little internet cafe on Bedford Ave making comment after trolling comment thinking you're funny.

Dear douchey hipsters:

Please let people who love Maiden talk about Maiden in peace. It was definitely not a sausage festival and would say it was split evenly male/female.

Go away trendy fucks and listen to Grizzly Bear or Vampire Weekend or whatever else the he'll you bang your boyfriends to

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2012 5:52 PM

I'm a fan of many different bands but when it comes to metal and hard rock shows, you can't really top Maiden. At least I don't think you can. People here can say they're gay or that the show was a sausage fest and that's fine because those people are ignorant and true Maiden fans and music fans in general who were at the show are smart enough to know these people are ignorant and sophomoric.

If you wanna talk about Maiden and music, then do so. If you want to be immature and homophobic, turn off your laptop and go hang out with some middle schoolers because you're pretty much on their wavelength.

Posted by Ed | June 29, 2012 6:02 PM

It doesn't surprise me that the typical ultra cool frequenters of this site have bullshit to say about Iron Maiden. I mean these people are so provincial and painfully ignorant that they've actually returned to the destitute, broken down dwellings their parents, grandparents, and perhaps even grandparents fled from decades ago in an effort to escape the realities of being a fucking adult with responsibility. Get fucking real and be man.

Posted by Doomstoned | June 30, 2012 4:47 PM

Everybody stop arguing and let's just all gather around the hummus platter and dip the baby carrots and chill out!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2012 5:31 PM

OK, I'm pretty sick of the Janick-bashing. Dude's a great guitarist and a wonderful personality, and if there's any metal band that really deserves to have three guitarists, it's fucking Maiden.

Most of the songs in their catalog have passages with more than two independent guitar lines (not to mention Harry's bass). As their live sound has evolved and become clearer with budget and technology, it's a better representation of the studio sound to have as much of that counterpoint as possible. Maiden IS heavy chamber music. Period.

So cut it out, OK - or at least start using your ears more.

Posted by Gounds | June 30, 2012 7:45 PM

Great set of pictures. Love that the set still looks the same as it did 15 years and the guys are still rocking it even with the added years.

Posted by Steve | July 1, 2012 11:28 AM

You nailed it on the head. The sound was not very good. Janick Gers I don't see adding any value. The show was definitely entertaining. For my brother it was his 4th and he said it was the worst of the 4. Honestly I got a little tired of the make more noise. We are going to NJ on Monday. One story I read said the show in Massachusetts the night before sound wise was worse. Can't imagine that. They should be good inside the Pru Center.

Posted by NK | July 2, 2012 4:22 PM

Well, I was there at the Newark show last night, and the sound quality certainly wasn't topnotch (again). Maybe it's just the band; I saw Maiden at Madison Square Garden in 2008, and it was basically the same in terms of sound quality (only a lot louder, in my opinion).
