of Montreal at McCarren Park - 6/15/12
Of Montreal

Starting with a long drum intro, the band went straight into "Suffer For Fashion" followed by one of the only two new songs of the night. Each song, however was a powerhouse. "She's A Rejector" had the crowd jumping; "St. Exquisite's Confessions" had everyone swaying to sexy saxophones; a cover of "Immigrant Song" had the audience headbanging. There was a hefty dose of Hissing Fauna and Skeletal Lamping tunes, including all 14 minutes of "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal" which I still hold to be their best live song. The 10 minute slow burn crescendo of a song, featuring K. Ishibashi's screechy violin and Barnes strained yells (when he goes into a gravelly scream, he sounds best), was an appropriate set closer, juxtaposing the low volume of the set before it. The sound issues weren't the bands fault: the event just happened to be in the middle of a semi-residential area. [CMJ]
of Montreal played a Northside show at McCarren Park last Friday (6/15) with Jens Lekman, The Thermals, and Beach Fossils before heading to Toronto for NXNE. Pictures of Jens Lekman from McCarren Park are HERE. More pics and the setlist from of Montreal's set are below...

The sound was AWFUL. It was simply just awful - at least standing at the back of the crowd in the middle of the stage (like in the middle of the grounds). But it was free so can't complain.

Enough already. of Montreal is like a bad high school play (yet it's all put on by a bunch of 40 somethings). Half the band left because they were sick of being dancers to a backing track... Take away the backing track and the inane visuals and all you have left is a bunch of self-indulgent dorks.

The shame knows no bounds when you admit to being at a show like this, even anonymously.

Looks shit. Go back to Canada, eh

I would rather see the iPods -- a band with real diversity from track to track!

My name is Gerald, I write 90% of the comments on BrooklynVegan, and I hate fun.

@3:41 - You hit the nail on the head. I'm pretty sure these guys saw one of those earlier circus-like Flaming Lips shows and decided to emulate it. In OM's defense, they have always leaned towards the theatrical, even in the early days. That said, it's really ashame that these clowns are heralded as one of the greatest live acts (especially when every other E6 band is better and doesn't need all that theatrical bullshit to prove it). They're tight because more than half the sounds you hear are done in the studio, not on stage. It's clear that Kevin Barnes real talent is self promotion.

People who brag they got in for free, how did you do it? Wasn't advertised as a free show and tickets were sold for it.
