Bonnaroo Day 4

" The band has a treasure trove of outright classics, and they performed what felt like all of them during their Sunday afternoon set. "Surfer Girl," "Barbara Ann," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Sloop John B," "Surfin' Safari," even "Kokomo" -- you name it, they probably played it. While that wasn't inherently surprising, what came as a bit of a shock was how fresh the band sounded -- even if its elder members didn't look the part -- both on their classics and on tunes from their recently released reunion LP, "That's Why God Made the Radio." Brian Wilson's presence is what makes this reunion so successful, but onstage he looked like the Queen of England, sitting idly behind a grand piano and taking the occasional vocal lead; Mike Love, meanwhile, seemed to be the main Beach Boy behind the wheel. Taken together with the afternoon's balmy weather and the day-in-the-park vibe of festivalgoers knocking around beach balls and splaying out on towels, the group's sublime set was just the thing for a lazy, hungover Sunday." [Rolling Stone / CNN]
The reunited Beach Boys (Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks), on a tour that also brought them to Chicago and NYC's Beeacon Theater recently, played Bonnaroo on Sunday (6/10). Our pictures from their 3pm Tennesee set are in this post (with the rest of our Sunday Bonnaroo pics coming shortly. Saturday can be seen HERE.)

If you're curious what the band sound like live, listen to some tour highlights at NPR. If you're curious what their new album cover looks like, head to their Facebook where you can also change the colors if they're not to your liking. If you're curious what the new album sounds like, you can listen to the whole thing below.

If you're in NYC and can't wait to see the band live at PNC Bank Arts Center or Jones Beach, don't forget you can catch them EARLY FRIDAY MORNING in Central Park courtesy of Good Morning America (free and also being televised).

Great setlist but Fuck Mike Love.

It was an amazing show! 70 degrees Fahrenheit, hot girls everywhere, beach boys on stage, and a robust hummus platter nearby.
What more could you ask for?

The final 4 songs on this new album are poignant and beautifully sung. Best work since Holland.

Impressive that they are still going strong after all these years. They might be setting a record for longevity.

People seem really into Jeremy Lin on this site -- it is almost cultlike! I don't get it I thought that hype had died down, especially on a music site?!?!?

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2012 8:15 AM

Still seems like Brian just wants go and hide away in his room.

8:15...don't be fooled by the imitators...there is only one YTIN.ASNIL© It's copyrighted. YTIN.ASNIL© gives a massive approval to the Beach Boys.

When did Howard Stern become their drummer?

Great show at Roo. Sorry to the person who left early for BFF, I left during Surfin' USA, and made it in time for a good spot for BFF...great set nonetheless, but I am glad I missed Kokomo. Screw Mike Love, did not like how he treated Brian on stage...sort of talked down to him in a way. Such an ass. But again, I was overly impressed with how they sounded despite how they looked...yeesh.

Found it a shame Wilson cannot sing Don't Worry Baby anymore...I know it would be virtually impossible.

The Beach Boys sounded terrible at roo. It was like watching them die. It was sad. I left quickly.

They were wonderful at the Beacon. Looking forward to Camden and PNC.

And yes, Mike Love is a horses ass. It was just an amazing experience seeing this band regardless. Thanks god John Stamos is no longer with the band.

10.14 left quickly and exited the festival to go listen to Skrillex in his car...

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2012 10:22 AM

These guys really nailed the whole corpse paint thing....they play black metal, right?

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2012 10:30 AM

I am glad I saw the brian wilson smile tour I bought lawn tickets for my father and I and we got upgraded to the 14th row because I recognized a guy from the band and he hooked us up. This shit is sadder than that.

Posted by Anonymous | June 17, 2012 12:48 AM
