Court Tavern

Stickers covering the wall tell some of the story.

Bold letters and designs shout out names such as Spredhaus, All Eyes West and Dinosaur Eyelids -- as well as dozens of other bands who performed there.

"People have told me, 'Don't take down that wall,' " said Mike Barrood, new owner of the Court Tavern, the legendary New Brunswick bar and music venue that closed in January.

Barrood, 33, is renovating the place and hopes to open within a month.

"A lot of the old customers called and offered to help and work for nothing," he said.

"Actually, people don't want it fixed up," he said of patrons who affectionately remember the scruffy-grungy atmosphere at the Church Street venue that gave bands their start.

Drummer Benny Horowitz remembers playing at the Court Tavern with six bands.

"I celebrated my 21st birthday there," said Horowitz, now with the Gaslight Anthem, a New Brunswick-based group that tours internationally. The band's first show was at the Court Tavern. [NJ.com]

The Gaslight Anthem's song "The Diamond Church Street Choir" is about the Court Tavern. They play Webster Hall tonight, and talk about the club and its booker Andy Diamond, in the video clip below...

No one gives a fuck about New Jersey unless you're talking about Maxwell's or ATP (which isn't even in NJ anymore). There's a reason this is BROOKLYN vegan. It's bad enough when I have to trek to Manhattan for a show.

Brooklyn > Manhattan > Jersey > LA > Philly

The Hub City really needs the home of the floating chromosome back.

Lol at the Jersey hate. Brooklyn Lager tastes like it was brewed from the pristine waters of the East River.

4:13, I know it's shocking, but there are people who live outside Williamsburg who may not be as cool/trendy as you, but who nevertheless enjoy music.

I know it's scary to leave your gentrified neighborhood and go out and experience the real world, but you should really put down your parents' rent checks and take a look at your immediate surroundings for once, you entitled brat.

There are more pretty girls in Williamsburg than in the entire state of New Jersey X 10. You sure are ugly down there ....

Anyone who hates on NJ is just trying to over compensate for being from the Midwest. Please just go back there and save us all from your shitty band and your holier than thou lame ass shit

as someone who lives here let me say that NB is always a great place to catch rock shows and there is still a thriving basement show scene but we will never really be culturally relevant again unless people are being compared t the bouncing souls or Thursday. supposedly every bar in NB used to play live music at some point I have font childhood memories of almost seeing Samiam at the melody bar.
I still need to go to Brooklyn if I want to meet girls that are older then 22 and not trash
