Harley Flanagan is wheeled out of Webster Hall
(via NYC Hammers)
Harley

To follow up our vague tweet last night, the NY Post has the full story:

A former member of the hard-core punk band the Cro-Mags attacked two of the group's current members with a hunting knife in a dressing room before a show at Webster Hall yesterday -- biting one and slashing both.
The band was about to take the stage about 8:15 p.m. when tattooed rocker Harley Flanagan, 42, barreled through the East Village venue's VIP section toward the Cro-Mags' dressing room, sending nearly 30 guests on the balcony into a frenzy, law enforcement sources and witnesses said.

"Someone was yelling, 'Get his hands, get his hands, he's got a knife!' " witness Dave Gustav said. "Everything went nuts."

Several beefy security guards rushed to contain Flanagan, who seemed about to boil over before he entered the East Village venue.

...Flanagan, the band's former bassist and founder, suffered a broken leg by the time security finally pinned him down, witnesses said. Cops handcuffed him to a chair and took him out.

"People started booing him and throwing stuff at him," eyewitness Justin Brannan said. "His hands were handcuffed but he still gave everyone the finger."

William Berario, 45, was slashed above the eye and bitten on his cheek. Michael Couls, 33, -- the band's current bassist, who is known in the hardcore world as "The Gook" -- was cut on his arm and stomach. -
[NY Post]

The show, part of the CBGB Festival, was shut down before either Sick of it All or Cro-Mags took the stage. Its a sad day for New York Hardcore. This unity that everyone speaks about? PMA? The time for that is now.

Harley, who did the stabbing, is an original member of the band that formed in 1981. John Joseph, also an original member, leads the current version of "Cro-Mags" that Harley is not in, and which John was calling "Cro-Mags (jam)" for a bit in 2008 to avoid confusion with a version of the band Harley was leading (or for legal reasons or something like that). John's version, which didn't keep the "(jam)" on their name for long, has been having much success the past few years, this CBGB Festival booking included. Harley's version hasn't been active in a while

UPDATE: Here are pictures from the show and a statement from Cro-Mags too..

Yeah, there's no unity in the New York scene anymore. Case in point all the cliquey fuckers at the Acheron last night, one of the best shows of the year, and everyone competing over who heard Noothgrush first.

the only guy who had a good attitude was ray beez...

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:06 PM

Please note...this did NOT take place at a hip hop show. A true shame that this is probably going to be what Harley is most known for from here on out.

Holy shizzbot!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:08 PM

The whole scene is one big "WAS". Grow the fuck up. It's not 1983 anymore.

Posted by Turkish Prison | July 7, 2012 12:11 PM

I'd rather watch this guy go berserk with knife than either Sick Of It All or Cro-Mags.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:13 PM

There should be refunds right? I mean, the two big acts didn't play and the place become a crime scene. Get on this CBGB and ticket web! We got gyped!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:14 PM

Well, I was going to spend all day outside, but now I'm just going to curl up with my laptop, eagerly awaiting the first off-color BV comment-section joke about a guy nicknamed "The Gook".

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:15 PM

D ftw! lulz!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:35 PM

I love him for this.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:43 PM

Cro-Mags have a dressing room and a VIP area. This shit would never happen with Kill Your Idols.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:54 PM

That's that acquired NYHC taste that had kids running to EMO. Thugalicious!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 12:54 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:02 PM

Harley is such a fuckin' shithead. JJ got on the mic and said "Thank Harley Flanagan for coming to the show to start trouble" and then they cut his mic off. At first, I thought it was him just stoking the flames because of the feud, but goddamn, internet bashing led to actual violence. Who knew?

Harley is gonna have to run. If he winds up in prison, he's fucked. Mikey Couls has strong DMS associations. If he doesnt do any time, he's gonna have to leave NY.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:06 PM

some krishna consciousness he's got. dude needs to eat some hummus and chill the fuck out. wwkd?

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:06 PM

why did it take so long for bv to post on this? even well known hardcore aficionados the ny times beat 'em to it. must have been pregaming for noted hippies gbv

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:10 PM

It was just a matter of time before Harley was going "Face Down, ASS UP" at Riker's Island again. Wonder what he will be biting on when he is sent upstate.

Posted by Ben Wah | July 7, 2012 1:16 PM

DMS - Department of Mathematical Studies? Guess you can't judge a book by its cover!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:23 PM

How many times you think Harley has been pinned down already in lockup? Five guys are pulling a train on him as you read this. One each holding a limb and one splitting this hardcore dickhead just like he loves it!

They will be chanting "Hari Krishna, Hari, Hari... grab your cheeks and spread them, biatch.... This is for NYHC!

And here's our token little trendy boy acting like what's supposed to be cool and when it was supposed to be cool. Lucky for you right now, there's no internal strife between you and your trendy buddies with their interspersed homophobic comments. Too bad you guys weren't close to the skirmish. God speed.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 1:41 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:01 PM

VOD was alright. They can play their songs well, I just never thought they were anything special. Suffer and DTO got great reactions, that's about it. Tim promoted their new song and told the crowd to "request it on Octane radio on Sirius". Yeah ok.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:05 PM

C'mon, D. Where are you when we need you?

TURBOQUEER.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:05 PM

Harley is, and always, was a real dumb ass street rat. He's a black belt in martial arts and is always talking shit like a childish moron on facebook. I feel sorry for his two young kids that they have a lughead like him for a father.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:13 PM

ABSOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:14 PM

^true. Where is our trusted middle aged hardcore corespondent "D"? We need a first hand report.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:15 PM

DMS is a bunch of grown men with tattoos and herpees.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:25 PM

D wouldnt be able to give you a first-hand report, because the guy doesnt even go to shows. He just talks shit on every hardcore band on the planet. I was there, but nowhere near where this all went down, which is basically the case for the majority of people.

Rumor has it he was going after Craig Setari, but Mike is the one who wound up getting stabbed.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:29 PM

I think everyone knows Harley is psycho
Also I dont think people should base ny hardcore's lack of unity
because some nut loses his mind.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:29 PM

I agree about the Acheron show! I was there and it was horrible. No unity, no hardcore family, no ethics. We should get together and try to bring some of it back, except we're all posting on here anonymously (myself included).

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 2:31 PM

“You can all thank Harley Flanagan for ruining the night for everyone,” Cro-Mags lead singer John Joseph McGowan told the crowd.

also J.J. don't forget to thank James Dressler Jimmy Gestapo
for inciting harley the day before the show putting the buzz in his ear to fuck over the cro-mags, sick of it all show. telling harley That he needs to man up and take a stand against J.J. getting harley high and strung out to commite a violent act against the scene. it is known that Jimmy G smuggled the knife in by band equiptment and hide it in the vip telling harley where to find it the next day to use it against the band. jimmy gestapo dressler is just as fault and guilty for inciting harley to commit attemped murder. James dressler also back stabbed a fellow member DMS by having harley stab gook in the vip. thats why harley didn't do it at the a.f. show and mike gook was there for harley to get revenge. but jimmy told him to get gook and J.J. The next day at cro-mags and soia instead so it wouldn't ruin the m.l. show with a.f. the day after. Jimmy gestapo and harley will both have to face the facts soon for there actions. Harley should have never listen to James dressler/ Jimmy gestapo. a real sad chapter in nyhc history.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 3:01 PM

Looks like Harley wasn't a vegetarian after all. While it was unwise legally to do it in front of 100 witnesses, and attacking unarmed people,he still made a statement, anfd that was his intention, too.he went all Jihadi on their asses.I bet they didn't see that coming.

Posted by Anonymous | July 7, 2012 3:09 PM

Jimmy G. is a jealous low life Coke head piece of Shit. yes it's been a known fact for a while now that Jimmy G. has been plotting against J.J. behind his back. this is a all time new low. And now he puts Harley up to his dirty work. let's hope Jimmy Gestapo O.D.'s before the fuzz Gets him too. and put end to murphys (crackhead) law.

I always find it interesting how people are willing to bad mouth the DMS crew in an anonymous forum like this. If faced with the opportunity would you all say half of this shit to their faces? Personally I don't think you would. Also, why all the sudden hate against Jimmy G?

also, this conspiracy theory about Jimmy G has got to stop until someone can possibly prove any of the bullshit they are saying. I'm sure Jimmy and Harley used to be freinds, but I seriously doubt Jimmy would ever do anything like this.

Harley can't be D. Remember, D didn't start going to shows until the '90s and has no real firsthand knowledge of '80s hardcore, while Harley's been involved in the NYC scene since the '70s.

It's a funny idea, though.

Posted by Dave | July 8, 2012 10:53 AM

D has made mention of going to shows in the 80s. NYHC in the 70s? Harley dude is only 42.

D = Harley

Harley = D

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:57 AM

Harley apparently snapped, and that's sad, as he was the main creative force behind the Cro mags and the reason the band existed in the first place. The Cro mags was his idea.

Josef is providing misleading and erroneous information to the press. See website here -at interviews- for the story from both sides. http://www.cromags.com/

This conflict of agendas ought to have been adjudicated by a Judge, as Harley and John have some strong points, with the Court's decision final.

However, Harley's psychopathic actions here are outrageous ! I hope he gets back on track after the dust settles, and that he does positive work in the future.

10:57am: D constantly makes references to "late '80s/early '90s" hardcore, but it's clear that he didn't start going to shows until maybe after 1991 or so-- but since a lot of the '90s bands he saw were formed in the '80s, he thinks that grandfathers him in.

Harley was the drummer for the Stimulators in the late '70s.

Metal shows are way more fun and less of a threat to your life.

Hardcore stabbed itself in the chest with this one. Hardcore EGOS destroyed its original intent to the point of violence. NO thanks.

WHERE IS D????

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 3:21 PM

"LA and southern Cal hardcore was always better than NY east coast hardcore."

Californians always think they're better or "above" than New Yorkers. Go figure. And they wonder why we get in their faces about that while they just give the old snarky, unconfrontational "I'm better than you" attitude.

"Funny how? Because I listen to only one of those bands you mentioned and I don't pretend to be in a scene, I don't have to dress/talk/act an easily identifiable and stereotyped way to pretend I'm a part of a subculture and not feel lonely when I walk into a show by myself? Yeah very funny. Seriously, shut the fuck up you fucking idiot and grow the fuck up. Hardcore is a goddamn fucking joke."

I'm not that into the negative stereotypes myself, but you realize that what was described about the "vain, elitist retards" and given the hipster nature and demographic on this site, I couldn't help but laugh and point out how the description holds MORE true for the latter. But yeah, get all hopped up on hot air and try to go off on me because if you're getting offended, maybe it's possible, just possible, that you're what I describe. I'll leave it up to you to feel the sting of the truth, whether it happens or not.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 3:25 PM

You know why they originally stopped the weekly hardcore matinees at CBGB way back in the day?

Violence. I know, hard to believe right?!?

Hardcore is for 14-17 year olds. Anyone older than that still listening is clearly impaired. I grew up in Boston and the shows are cheesy as hell; and I would imagine New York is just as bad. White people from the suburbs with IQ"s bordering on retardation should probably just stay inside and not attend concerts. Hardcore = biggest joke in sub culture.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 5:30 PM

The Teeny Tiny Penis Culture that is NYHC should have been stopped before it started... And you wonder why asshole, jock, or meat head is always in at least one sentence describing the movement...

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 8:06 PM

Release the caps lock and learn to read 8:06. Helping to pave the way and starting something are two very different things. Any Killed By Death compilation will show you that there were DIY labels prior to hardcore. But certainly none as influential to U.S. DIY culture as SST, Posh Boy, Dischord, Alternative Tentacles, Touch & Go, etc...all of which were direct results of the hardcore movement.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 9:26 PM

I know this incident shouldn't matter but it probably will. Expect to wait in long security lines if you were planning on going to H20 and 7 Seconds at House Of Vans.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 9:55 PM

I grew up listening to hardcore music, used to go to shows a lot in the late 80's and 90's. Some of the best times, but it's such a joke now. The No Mags have 1 good record from 30 years ago that they are still trying to live off, 1! AF =Roger, Vinnie, and a bunch of scabs, their last ok record was Riot Riot Upstart, Murphy's Law oh please Dedicated was a valiant effort but he can't seem to keep a solid lineup, wonder why...

I don't get out to many a hardcore fiesta these days, but I was at the BnB Bowl, which had more wannabe gangstas than a Jay Z concert and I was at this fiasco, only because I do think SOIA are the last relevant NYHC band. I haven't bought the last 5 or 6 releases, but they've always been together, toured, and have consistently released new material, not always good, but I respect them and their live show is killer.

Boy, what a mistake. I wanted to see Sai Nam, but they went on way early. Never cared for Absolution, so hearing they just finished upon arriving, I wasn't bummed. I unfortunately was in the venue when VOD took the stage. What garbage, these pretentious dorks is everything I hate in a band. Metal crap with skin tight dress shirts, fuck off.

Whats my point? Oh yeah, I'm done with this tough guy thing and the egos these "hardcore members" have. Growing up, they were my heroes, after meeting a lot of them, it was a big let down. I'll watch it on you tube, maybe.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:01 PM

10:01, since you actually seem like you were a fan of the music at some point, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. NY hasnt contributed much to hardcore in a long time. It's fractured. You have to go out to Long Island to find a real, consistent scene that puts on shows every week. NYC doesnt have that, nor do we have the new bands to back it up.

Sick of It All are still busting their asses, and they continue to put on a great live show. Really hope the show gets rescheduled soon. I hadnt seen them in awhile, and only got to see VOD the other night (not my thing).

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:10 PM

If the Cro-Mags were still really hardcore, they would have played with stab wounds....fkn poseurs

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:24 PM

Hardcore is for suburban teenagers, so it makes sense that their is a scene in Long Island.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:24 PM

hey 10:01: i hear you. good points. i've been going to live music for 25+ years. loved HC at early age but it's too limited. i sometimes think that all the fightings, fireworks being set off, bottles throw, and ill treatment of women at gigs is because the music is so fucking boring after awhile. its like the WWF of music... its candy rather than real food.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:32 PM

10:39 - totally! stitched JJ up with some yak butter and a dee dee lama prayer.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 10:42 PM

Hardcore was fun in 83, as a very small underground music scene, which mixed with the artists and graffiti crews and drag queens down on Avenue A. The L.E.S. scene was a short lived historical moment, and to believe NYHC is somehow radical or underground today is self-parody.

Posted by Anonymous | July 8, 2012 11:18 PM

This is the start of the quarrel at the next level. Harley will raise the funds to make bail. At the trial, he will give Harley's version of the story. And that version makes some good sense. Harley is either a total nut, or a cunning and courageous genius - genius, as he won't go to jail for assault and weapons, but has the world's attention, and will predictably scream about John's coup on Cro Mags, w/ detail. So stay tuned at FOX News ...

Posted by Anthony | July 9, 2012 12:17 AM

Thanks 10:32/36, people ARE bored, me too. I got an idea, we should have Harley and JJ duke it out like celebrity death match. Im sure the same jerkoffs that are paying to see YOT, Gorilla Biscuits, Shit Terror, etc. Would absolutely fork over $20-$40 a ticket to watch these fools pound each other. Whoever wins gets sole possession of the Cro Mags, but is that really worth winning? I think not.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 2:02 AM

Thinks that make you go Hmmmmmmmm....

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 8:28 AM

So who does own the legal rights to the "Cro-Mags" name?

Posted by Green Slime | July 9, 2012 9:10 AM

Talking about how "hardcore sucks now" and then dropping names like Cro Mags and Absolution and Sick of It All, those are bands that don't represent what the current hardcore scene is now. You're talking about the old, dried-up reunion circuit. That's like saying "rock n roll sucks now, rock n roll is stupid in 2012" and then holding up Lynyrd Skynyrd and Foreigner as examples.

Posted by Dave | July 9, 2012 9:26 AM

@9:26 How can Sick of It All be part of the reunion circuit when they have NEVER broken up! Still going strong since 1986 with no break whatsoever. Get your facts straight!

Amazing how people post things like this on here.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 9:42 AM

Harley hung out with Joe Strummer and Mick Jones during the 16 Tons Tour of 1980, backstage at the Palladium.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 9:43 AM

Has anyone mentioned that the recent Blood for Blood shows were cancelled because Buddha raped a 13 year old? Been an exciting year for Hardcore.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 9:50 AM

Harley Flanagan, 42.... So He was 11 in 1981???

Posted by james | July 9, 2012 9:54 AM

There weren't a lot of decent paychecks to be had in the eighties when the Cro-Mags put out Age of Quarrel, an incredibly influential record. I do think it's fucked up that now, when there is money to be made, JJ has been able to profit off the name while Harley, the chief songwriter of the album, has been struggling.

As for NYHC itself... if you can't respect other people's music and scene you're saying more about yourself then anything else. There's a reason 12:27 is going to shows by himself.

Interesting to note that 2:37 way above, the guy blaming Jimmy Gestapo for all this, posted the same rant with his real name on the Cro-Mags FB page (something you anonymous folks ragging NYHC would all surely be terrified to do). The Cro-Mags page responded by removing all FB comments by others. Interesting.
