Hot Chip

Wednesday's wild thunderstorms threw a big, wet wrench into the gears of many outdoor shows last night, causing cancellations/postponements of the MNDR/Javelin/Delicate Steve show on the Intrepid, the Summerstage show with Big Daddy Kane/Marley Marl in Queens, and moved the Refused/Off! show from Williamsburg Park to Greenpoint club Europa. But the rain didn't scare a bunch of geeky dudes from England with a bunch of temperamental electronic gear. Nor did it stop their fans, who packed Prospect Park to the fences and danced their asses off the whole time.

Hot Chip's set time (and doors to the bandshell) were pushed back in hopes the rain would stop, which it did, making for a muggy night but no one seemed to mind. Hot Chip thanked Celebrate Brooklyn for not canceling the show. The band, now augmented with not just long-time live band member Rob Smoughton (aka Grovesnor) but also Holy Ghost! drummer Jim Orso, played the lion's share of their new album, In Our Heads, and peppered the rest of their set with favorites like "Over and Over," "I Was a Boy from School," "I Feel Better," and "Ready for the Floor," the latter of which morphed into a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere" (which they've done before).  At the end of their show, they invited the whole crowd to come party with them at Santos (where JEFF the Brotherhood played earlier that evening).

We missed openers Gang Gang Dance  but they've also got three upcoming headlining Brooklyn gigs, so maybe we'll catch one of those. Hot Chip play with Chromatics at Terminal 5 on Friday (7/20) and tickets are still available. More pictures and the setlist from the Prospect Park show are below.

Seems like a short setlist, no? How long did they play for?

who pays 35 bucks to sit at a hot chip concert

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 11:26 AM

Alexis could play MCA if a Beasties movie was ever made.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 11:32 AM

It was definitely a REAL short one. I'm guessing they had to stop due to a curfew? Not gonna lie, the length of the set was pretty disappointing.

I'm not sure I could ever ingest enough drugs to enjoy Gang Gang Dance. The woman who sings sounds like she's dying. How the F does a band like that rise to semi-fame and get an opening slot in Prospect Park? Is it because James Murphy says he likes them? Since when are hipsters heady enough to enjoy experimental jam band music? Crazy shit.

what time did hc go on? very likely due to curfew at the band shell. sorry i missed it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 11:55 AM

hot chip went on around 9:10 and got off around 10:30. Kind of on the short side but if you look at most of their sets, thats about how long they usually play for.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:02 PM

11:25 - Set went from 9:10-10:30. 10:30 was the noise curfew. Hot Chip did the best with what they had.

11:26 - Most people were standing and dancing. They had a pretty sizeable GA pit area directly in front of the stage.

11:50 - Yes, I also thought GGD sounded like shit. But then again, their only really good song is "House Jam". Feel like they're just a less tuneful version of The Knife.

Surprised that this show actually happened considering how the venue has canceled past events even when the weather was not bad.

"Surprised that this show actually happened considering how the venue has canceled past events even when the weather was not bad."

in the past several acts have performed in the rain

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:22 PM

Lazy fuckers, really lazy fuckers. It was the same setlist they've been doing on this tour.

They should be ashamed of themselves. Lazy fuckers.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:26 PM

i guess an hour and 20 isn't too bad. in times past, i think they've only played about 90 mins or an hour and 45 tops.

how does the new shit sound live?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:27 PM

Hot Farts!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:43 PM

they jammed a bit on a couple of songs. the show was great, and they were really tight.

also, the place was empty in comparison to other sold out shows ive been to at prospect

Confirming what someone predicted when the tickets went on sale which was that there were LOADS of cheap tickets being sold outside the park and on Craig's and SH Walked up right before GGD and got a ticket for 6 bucks. Want to say thank you to that poster who made that first comment. Saved me lots of money. To the people who paid full price. Suckers!!. This should be the same for Wilco next week.

"Who pays 35 bucks to sit at a hot chip concert?"

Who would admit to even remotely digging them in the first place? Oh, that's right. Trendy people.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 12:55 PM

the sound at bandshell was real shitty.

To the author:

You say the place was packed, and that everyone danced their asses off, yet every crowd pic you post is of people sitting down and looking at their phones.

I was at this show, and it was great. Your pics do it no justice.

12:51...what price did the seller start at that you ended up at $6?

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 1:28 PM

"Thursday's wild thunderstorms..."

Uhh, today is Thursday.

Concert was amazing ! Love this concert series and their wise selection of EDM inspired music the past few years. It's something I've come to look forward to every summer. It's a great venue and everyone is in a great mood.

That's cool if a bands not your cup of tea not sure why people feel the need to put people's music likes down on this site. Someone that negative will most likely only be a visitor of new york and never make it here with that attitude.

I paid money to see this show and had a great time so it's money well spent.

Posted by Steve | July 19, 2012 1:34 PM

12:51. You only got that price due to the bad weather.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 1:46 PM

Seller asked for 15 to start off. People outside were pretty resigned to the fact they were not going to get much for their tickets

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

1:47 You are a better negotiator that I am..I would have just paid the $15!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 1:59 PM

I would have started offering $10, then gone down from there

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:01 PM

It is easy when you know what's up before you play the game.

1:46
You are very very wrong. Tickets were going for less than face on Craig's and SH before the rain started in the afternoon. There were lots of tickets going around that had nothing to do with the rain. People could not give these tickets away and would have been the same if it was a sunny all day.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:02 PM

That show was Pupik!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:05 PM

you love getting tickets and mooching from other peoples hard earned money but then lavish youself with expensive apartments, restaurants, drinks vacations, etc. gross.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:16 PM

^not gross but frugal..hey some people use coupons, some negotiate..fact is both parties werw willing to do the deal so no harm no fowl. Just because you paid full price doesn't mean you have to look down on people!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:18 PM

"Your pics do it no justice."

BV uses the same, tired, boring photographers all the time.

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:24 PM

"no harm, no fowl"

lol, awesome. no poultry, either!

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 2:54 PM

What did the photog do wrong here ? These look great

Posted by Anonymous | July 19, 2012 8:41 PM

Hot Chip sucks, this concert sucked, bragging about your "negotiating" skills on a BV message board sucks mens penises, because its gay
