Pitchfork Festival 2012

The 2012 Pitchfork Music Festival continued on Saturday (7/14), and like day 1, Chicago's Union Park was plagued by some rain, but everything moved along as planned and the weather cleared up by mid-afternoon. Day 2 began with sets by The Psychic Paramount and The Atlas Moth (both of who we unfortunately missed) and then continued with Cloud Nothings, Flying Lotus, Schoolboy Q, Chromatics, Hot Chip, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Grimes and much more.

If you weren't at the festival, did you stream it live?

More pics from day 2 are below (all by Fred Pessaro/BBG except Grimes by Chase Turner) and day 1 pics are HERE.

Do you think the Chromatics' singer, while onstage, just thinks to herself constantly "look sad look sad look sad..."?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 5:28 PM

A few observations:

1.) Wow...am I glad I didn't fly to Chicago for this. The shitty weather would have made a so-so lineup feel even worse.

2.) When did indie rock audiences become one in the same with plain vanilla jam band audiences?

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/pitchforkfest/2012/day2/311.jpg

3.) If that's not make up on Bradford Cox, the man is dying.

4.) Hey photo editor...you're working too hard. Go take a break because we really do need even more photos of the exact same shit.

That is all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 5:53 PM

4.) I couldn't have said it better

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 9:26 PM

Damn! What an all star line up. Weird Al Yankovic joined Liturgy on 2nd guitar! Bob Dylan joined Youth Lagoon on stage! Awesome! Hey keyboard player from Chromatics you got something under your eyes. Yeah you, there like little dots or something.

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 9:27 PM

what is with the grimes dancers...?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 9:35 PM

worst photo editing I've seen

"You guys, hide the joint, Brooklynvegan might be around!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 10:01 PM

Too many pics of the same sad hipsters looking bored playing their own music, which is probably right, because most of these bands (and indie/blog rock right now) is super boring.

where is the rock folks?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 10:21 PM

dear geigh balls,
all the void shirts and crusty jackets in the world couldn't buy you "cred".
sincerely,
everybody

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 10:23 PM

I look at Godspeed and think the following things:

1) This is the most pretentious bullshit I have ever seen.

2) I am so insanely jealous at these people because they are slapping their guitar necks with a screwdriver, headlining festivals, and being lauded as genius.

Why God, why?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 10:25 PM

did you only take pix while grimes was doing opening instrumentals?

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 11:07 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 15, 2012 11:08 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 12:12 AM

^ I feel bad for you.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 12:33 AM

12:12 ha, pretty funny

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 12:58 AM

Damn! What an all star line up. Weird Al Yankovic joined Liturgy on 2nd guitar! Bob Dylan joined Youth Lagoon on stage! Awesome! Hey keyboard player from Chromatics you got something under your eyes. Yeah you, there like little dots or something.

July 15, 2012 9:27 PM

That about sums it up & theres a guy from the Dead or Wide spread Panic playing keyboards in Hot Chip.
Is the crowd really all that young, about 17 to 22? Or are they just coddled suburbanites?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 2:32 AM

10:25 is off. You need some help.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 5:33 AM

bands and audience look so fcking bored...looks miserable.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 8:34 AM

Don't get me wrong I love Godspeed, but everything about the members as people screams terrible. Any interview i've read with Efrim makes him seem like he hates everything in the world. It kind of reminds me of the whole Joaquin Phoenix thing actually.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 8:59 AM

@ 11:07 PM - basically. Tiny pit with 60+ photographers and they kicked us out near the end of the second song. There wasn't a ton to shoot as she's like 5'1" and was behind two synthesizers.

Posted by Minus Manhattan | July 16, 2012 9:26 AM

not enough grimes

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 9:26 AM

were there any chicks at that show

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 9:54 AM

9:26 - I don't mean this as a crticism - was the mood there as miserable as the pics make it look? Did the weather ruin it for everyone?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:35 AM

Yeah, the photogs got booted from the photo pit.

So they figured the next-best thing to do was take incriminating photos of random attendees and post them online.

Journalism!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:38 AM

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:42 AM

Damn, hella white people!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:42 AM

So GYBE warmed up for Grimes?
I knew Chicago was out of touch with the American public, but now I know it's out of touch with all levels of reality.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:53 AM

Grimes was on a different stage. pay attention

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 11:57 AM

^ show me where it says that here. oh, and suck my joint, bonernose.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:05 PM

12:29- it doesn't need to say it. its a fact bonernose

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:21 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:26 PM

@ 10:35 AM People definitely had fun despite the weather, though it obviously caused a bit of confusion since they had to stop some of the shows and the schedule got a bit off. That and everyone being soaking wet, but it dried off quickly.

I think the issue with Grimes was that she was on the smallest stage and there was nowhere near enough room to accommodate everyone that wanted to see her. It was very difficult to hear on that stage if you were among those many relegated to the back of the crowd.

Posted by Minus Manhattan | July 16, 2012 1:33 PM

that girl from Cults has awful legs...

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 3:24 PM

i would drench her legs, and the slob from sleigh bells too. bend over slut.

Also Grimes is the worst thing ever.

Do we really need 'Top 40' musians at pitchfork?

I remember in 2006 when Devendra Banhart took stage at Pitchfork and commended Chicago for having the most musically educated audience in possibly the world.
Feist and Vampire Weekend..... Really now? An Acura tent and local brewaries being replaced at the beer tent by Heineken?????
Who is the audience?
On another note, I am happy all of the duoche bag VWeekend fans are paying to bring amazing acts to Chi such as Wild Flag and Goodspeed, Real Estate, Flying Lotus, Beach House. Sleigh Bells, OTC and Ty Segall as well as Chicagos prime Chavez, Japandroids, Atlas Moth ...... Let's keep it an honor to presence these stages PLEASE
SN.
