Roger Waters
Roger Waters

Roger Waters projected his message stadium-wide, literally, when he brought his new production of "The Wall" to Yankee Stadium on Friday, starting a two-night stand. A white-brick wall, which is both an ideal video screen in concert and the central metaphor of the rock opera he wrote for the 1979 album by Pink Floyd (with additional music by the band's guitarist, David Gilmour), spanned the stadium and towered 40 feet high.

The message Mr. Waters hammered home -- with images including animated regiments of goose-stepping hammers on the march -- was distrust of power and authority in many forms: parents, schools, celebrities, corporations, countries, ideologies. Throughout intermission (as elegiac music played), and at points during the concert, the names and faces of people killed by wars, terrorism and government actions were shown on the wall. Quotations from George Orwell, Franz Kafka and Dwight D. Eisenhower also appeared on it. At one point, animated bombers dropped corporate logos and religious symbols; "Run Like Hell" included a WikiLeaks video from an American helicopter firing on Iraqi journalists. Early in the concert, Mr. Waters decried "all the victims of state terror all over the world," and preached that giving governments, police and soldiers too much power was "a very steep and slippery slope to tyranny. [NY Times]

Roger Waters brought his unbelievable, high-budget, musical-theater performance of The Wall to NYC this past weekend for shows on Friday (7/6) and Saturday (7/7) at Yankee Stadium. Complete with the long video screen wall (and stage) spanning the outfield, costume changes, the pig flying around the stadium, giant puppets of Wall characters like the teacher and mother, pyrotechnics, video of David Gilmour singing parts (and Robbie Wyckoff handling some of the Gilmour parts live), G.E. Smith of the Saturday Night Live band on guitar, and much more, the Wall Live is an over the top spectacle that leaves even the most die-hard capitalists (the ones in the $250 seats), but maybe not all Pink Floyd purists, satisfied.

The shows were part of an ongoing tour, which also hits Philly this week.

More pictures, a video, and setlist (aka the Wall, in order, with an intermission between the two records) from night one, below.

Looks like a really huge erection.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:48 AM

11:42- How were they sad? Because they had more money than you?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:54 AM

Wouldn't this be like in 20 years if Adam Clayton did a stage production of Achtung Baby? Am I missing anything?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:56 AM

^$? More like who in 2012 finds out that Roger Waters is playing Yankee Stadium and is excited about that? Sad fucks is right.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:56 AM

Roger the anti-semite dressing up like hitler..no thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:57 AM

When music was good...

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 11:58 AM

This is where all the BV readers tell everybody how Roger Waters sucks, the Wall is not a great album, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:02 PM

^hes got nothing on the rest of the band..and the Wall is a poor pick to keep shilling...Floyd have many WAAAAY betetr albums...yawn!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:04 PM

Damn, I saw this at Nassau Coliseum last year so I thought I had no reason to see it again. Looks like he changed up the production and made it even bigger. Now I'm sad I missed it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:04 PM

This is so gay. That pic of that dork and his mom speaks volumes.

You should be embarrassed if you actually paid..what, is it something like $500 to see this piece of garbage?!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:04 PM

tickets were a few bucks outside? amirite

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:05 PM

"You should be embarrassed if you actually paid..what, is it something like $500 to see this piece of garbage?!"

yeah you should. How lame can you be? Baby-boomers please go the fuck away.

ha ha..Adam Clayton presents ACHTUNG BABY! 3 nights at Yankee Satdium when this rolls around!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:07 PM

Best concert production, bar none. If more bands were influenced by Pink Floyd music would be much better off.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:08 PM

It would have been better if he got rid of the backing tracks and played more "live"..

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:09 PM

12:08 GBV was influenced by the Dead and look where they are now!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:10 PM

Video of David Gilmour? You mean video of young Roger Waters right?

Posted by drij | July 9, 2012 12:10 PM

I was sick of this marketing ploy. Inside at the concert they were selling "waters" for $6 and they didn't even let you keep the cap..this guy will squeeze the last nickle out of you if he could!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:12 PM

^Ha ha I just spit up my lunch!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:15 PM

Richard Wright's ghost says "Fuck you, Roger Waters!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:15 PM

Syd Barrett's ghost says "Fuck you, Roger Waters!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:24 PM

How long are these old fucks gonna milk The Wall? Until the very last millennial says "UNCLE"?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:27 PM

The only reason to complain is if you missed this because you too busy being snarky about EVERY band on BV...

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:28 PM

Nick Mason and the Tea Set say "Fuck you, Roger Waters!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:28 PM

When one of you hipseter wannabes makes an album as brilliant as the Wall, you can milk it too. Stop being so jealous. If you don't like it -- don't go to see it. Spend your money on something important like seeing whether Friends will show their tits at some local crap show in Williamsburg that nobody cares about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:30 PM

12:28 I rather a paint a wall then watch that wall!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:30 PM

Did somebody above call Roger Waters an anti-semite? Wow, can you prove that one? Amazing the shit people will say in an anonymous post.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:31 PM

12:30 Roger Waters made the Wall? Then how come it is Pink Floyd's the Wall? What am I missing?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:32 PM

12:31...why don't you type in Roger Waters Anti-Semite in google and see what comes up. Can you also just look at all the above images from the show. Uniform and imagery look similar?? Guess you never studied WWII or the Holocaust. Its ok.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:33 PM

12:34 he can deny it all he wants but his actions speak volumes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:36 PM

The Jewish community says "Fuck you, Roger Waters!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:37 PM

If you don't understand that those images are part of a show that has a message that is exactly the opposite of what Nazis stood for, then your critical thinking skills are sadly lacking. He's playing a role. Do you not hear the lyric, see the images, and understand what it's about? Does somebody need to spell it out for you? Fucking hipster morons.

Idiots:

George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. He was a founding member of the progressive rock band Pink Floyd, serving as bassist and co-lead vocalist. Following the departure of bandmate Syd Barrett in 1968, Waters became the band's lyricist, principal songwriter and conceptual leader.

Filling the void left by Barrett's departure in March 1968, Waters began to chart Pink Floyd's artistic direction. He became the principal songwriter, lyricist, and co-lead vocalist (along with Gilmour, and at times, Wright), and would remain the band's dominant creative figure until his departure in 1985.

He wrote the lyrics to the five Pink Floyd albums preceding his own departure, starting with The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and ending with The Final Cut (1983)

Waters produced thematic ideas that became the impetus for the Pink Floyd concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979)—written largely by Waters—and The Final Cut (1983)—written entirely by Waters.

I am Jewish.
I don't think Israelis should treat Palestinians like shit.
Am I an anti-semite?
I guess so.
Life is so simple for some of you, i.e. the ones with no critical thinking skills who probably worship Che Guevara.

I am jewish.
I don't think palestinians should lob rockets at Israel..

Wish we could all live peacefully...

There needs to be more dialog and less violence..Life is too short.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:42 PM

Can anybody here find one single lyric from the Wall or any other Pink Floyd or Roger Waters song that taken in context shows Waters is anti-semitic? Can anybody point to any single action or word from Roger Waters that shows anti-Jewish animus? Are you all just sheep?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:44 PM

12:30 Haha, right on, man.

12:32 You should be a semantics professor.

12:36 -- what actions speak volumes?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:45 PM

You idiots from wiki" Pink Floyds the Wall:

Pink slowly begins to lose his mind to metaphorical "worms". He shaves off all of his body hair and his eyebrows (an incident inspired by former bandmate Syd Barrett, who appeared at a 1975 recording session of Wish You Were Here, having shaved his eyebrows, head hair, and body hair[2][3]) and, while watching The Dam Busters on television, morphs into his neo-Nazi alter-ego. Pink's manager, along with the hotel manager and some paramedics, discover Pink and inject him with drugs to enable him to perform. The drugs cause Pink to hallucinate and he fantasises that he is a neo-Nazi dictator, his concert a rally. His followers proceed to attack ethnic minorities, Pink holds a rally in suburban London, singing "Waiting for the Worms". The scene is intercut with images of animated marching hammers that goose-step across ruins. Pink screams "Stop!" and takes refuge in a bathroom stall at the concert venue, reciting poems which would later be used as lyrics on Pink Floyd's "Your Possible Pasts" from The Final Cut album and "5:11 AM (The Moment of Clarity)" from Roger Waters' The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking. In an animated sequence, Pink puts himself on trial. He is depicted as a small, pink rag doll that rarely moves.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:46 PM

12:45 we should paint a wall together...we can get it done faster then watch the grass grow!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:46 PM

The Wall is really one of Pink Floyd's worst albums. An overblown experiment in corporate rock excess. I'll take Meddle or Atom Heart Mother any day.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:48 PM

this show is better than anything produced on broadway, EVER

Posted by thighmaster | July 9, 2012 12:48 PM

The Wall is soooooo deep. I can really see why it is blowing all these lame ass baby boomer's minds for the last 30+ years.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:49 PM

^I would take U2's 50 ft discoball lemon over this cheeseball anyday!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:49 PM

I always thought in a general sense, one of the themes of the Wall was how a rock concert is like a nazi rally with all the fans worshipping, so to speak, the musicians, who are like the party chiefs. How that is anti-semitic is beyond me. It's actually a very interesting metaphor.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:50 PM

IF you missed the Yankee Stadiums shows you missed out!!!! Don't worry though he will play the same show for the next 2 decades too so you can catch it then!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:50 PM

Israel thrives off keeping Palestinians prisoners in an un-recognized-by-UN nation. Israel's main export is surveillance software and equipment to fight the "war on terror." for business to boom they need to keep making terrorists - and demeaning a people is a great way to make some angsty muthas.

in short - Israel makes more money off war than off peace.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:51 PM

12:50 I get what you are saying but in NY everyone is so jaded and they sit so it is not like a rally..Well that and the concert attendees average age was 60

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:52 PM

12:48 -- you say that because you are a hipster . . . . Most people would say Darkside of the Moon, the Wall, and Wish you Were Here are the best Floyd albums, but since you have to be cooler than everybody else, not to mention contrarian, you don't agree. Nobody cares what you think anyway. Go get a new tattoo.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:53 PM

12:51 one of those 9/11 conspiracy types eh?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:53 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:54 PM

The show really should have been "The Wall" sponsored by Facebook...

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:54 PM

If you're too cool for Roger Waters at Yankee Stadium you're a hipster?

lulz, ok.

The Jersey based lawyers are apparently furious that we are dissing this cherished rite of passage from middle age to old age.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:55 PM

12:52 -- well, obviously not in NYC these days . . . . But one of the ideas I always saw in the album was how a rock star can manipulate a crowd just as a politician can.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:57 PM

some classic one liners here..almost as good as the Lustmord threads!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 12:59 PM

I wonder if the morons here calling Roger Waters a nazi are aware that his father was killed in action fighting the Germans in WWII?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:02 PM

^Yep because everyone is just like their dad!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:03 PM

Roger Waters has always used fascist imagery to speak to his point, which is fear of some unseen omnibus force (let's call it 'oligarch enlightened direction') overtaking rational thought and decency (let's call it 'individual freedoms'). I don't think he is being anti-Semetic for this. I do think that his fear is real, however .... but not in the direction that he or most of the sheeple that doze through life are indoctrinated to.

If you are willing to do a scathingly honest assessment of who actually holds the power in America today (e.g. who is making moves to control the citizens, who is funding these moves) then the answer will be clear.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:05 PM

Still . . . waiting . . . for some proof . . . that Waters is anti-semitic . . . .

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:05 PM

1:02 I didn't realize that. I take back everything I said! Roger Water's is a champion for the Jewish People!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:11 PM

lol @ you trendy losers with your "GBV > Floyd" nonsense.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 1:11 PM

Oh, so this so called proof that Waters is an anti-semite is out there on the world wide web just waiting to be found? I forgot how everything on the world wide web is unimpeachable.

Are people really so lazy that they just believe some shit they read on the web?

I mean, people here in these comments are calling Roger Waters anti-semitic, which by your logic, means he is, because it's on the internet!!! The internet says it!!!

When I went to school, back before the internet, we actually had to cite to sources and PROVE things or at least make an argument from those sources.

I guess now, all you kids just learn that proper proof constitutes telling somebody to google something.

Fucking pathetic. But also the reason nobody wants to hire people from your generation for anything other than waiting tables, making coffee, and fixing computers.

The Wall - amazing...yes, controversial as eveything todya in life...but his reasons (if anybody knows of it) are explicit...in the songs words, in the anger with the politicians actions today, media etc...this world is fucked up anyway...just get the ticket and enjoy the show...and think about your own experinces because i am sure you all have your "dark sides"....

Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky
Oooooooo ooo ooooo oooh
Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
The flames are all long gone
But the pain lingers on
Goodbye blue sky
Goodbye blue sky
Goodbye

The whole point of The Wall is how horrible war is. Pink's life was hindered by the fact that his father was killed in the war, and it never got dealt with in therapy as it might today. His mother was unable to cope and ended up smothering him, stunting his emotional and psychological growth into a healthy adult.
It's about how his life fell apart as he had a mental breakdown once he reached adulthood.

Learn the story before you judge it, you bunch of morons.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:03 PM

All those tax breaks the rich republicans got under Bush..now they are waving around money like nobodys business!

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:04 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:08 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:25 PM

Che Guevara was a serial murderer like Charles Manson. Only Che lost his erection after ejaculation. And Chuck is still alive, due to the heartless American judicial system.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:29 PM

This show is epic in every sense of the word. The music and themes are timeless. Don't trust anyone under 30 and get your ass to this show. Can't wipe the self-assured grin off my face since Saturday night...
and my sorry old ass appreciated the cushioned seats at Yankee stadium

Posted by Smack | July 9, 2012 3:32 PM

^yeah go ask the Cubans in Miami how great Che was. Stupid sellout liberal baby-boomers are the worst.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:32 PM

Denise Rich renounces US citizenship, saves tens of millions in taxes! What a libutard poster child! Yes, more of everything for everyone (* so long as you don't ask me to pay my fair share of taxes)

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:54 PM

Did he play topless? If not, why is this even being covered on BV?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 3:56 PM

Animals, Meddle, even a Momentary Lapse of Reason...are all better than The Wall.

Waters is a narcissistic douchebag!

Posted by Ron | July 9, 2012 4:06 PM

I'm Jewish and I was at the show. I had heard Roger is an anti-semite, but I personally thought he was mocking Hitler in the show and including him as one of those not to be trusted.

Also, Adam Clayton is 52 years old, so he's also a baby boomer. I was 21 when "I Will Follow" was released and I still love it today!

Posted by LJ | July 9, 2012 4:41 PM

Oh and for those who don't know, "I Will Follow" was released in 1980, way before a lot of you were born.

Posted by LJ | July 9, 2012 4:44 PM

1:56 made me laugh. I am embarrassed to admit it but whatever.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 5:19 PM

Doesn't it work out cool when you play The Wall along side The Wizard of Oz? Or is that just because everyone who did that was tripping on LsD?

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 5:30 PM

No welfare ass muthafucka ever gave me a job. True fact.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 5:41 PM

Forget 1:56, I'll admit that the 2nd 1:23 made me laugh.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 5:46 PM

His original lyric for Money was "I'm alright, jew keep your hands off my stack"

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 6:53 PM

you guys are all very cool. more than half of you were probably psyched to read up on this and wish you were there(no pun), but by the time you scrolled down to the (very hip) BV comments section ragging on 'old people' you had changed your young hip mind... hipster runoff is that way -->>>>>>

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:06 PM

as for the concert and the 6$ bottles of water.. not only is that the nature of the beast at large concerts it's also called overhead they are performing in YANKEE STADIUM (2 days after independence day in 2012 if you didn't catch that lil' factoid) this isn't 285kent where you're making sure your sus trill buddies don't overdose in the bathroom

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:10 PM

^haha this old timer is mad we are ruining his trip down memory lane. Yes, all of us hipsters are supper pissed that we couldn't buy $250 to see a nostalgia act at Yankee stadium. Enjoy your $6 bottle of water you baby-boomer mark.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:17 PM

@7:17pm actually I'm 22 years old buddy and i never even REALLY got into floyd, and i don't even live in nyc (HA)... just making fun of you lemmings for not being able to form your own opinions on ANYTHING, that's why you frequent websites like this

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:20 PM

and if you think THE WALL in YANKEE STADIUM is just a nostalgia act like the eagles getting together in some guy's backyard in Canada then you need to re-evaluate your musical knowledge... name 3 more symbolic concerts in HISTORY than this one. i dare you

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:25 PM

Wait we're lemmings because we're goofing on a money grab nostalgia act show at Yankee Stadium where they apparently juiced every last ounce of profit from the morons who attended?

We're the ones who can't form our own opinions, or think for ourselves?

Haha nice logic there, you're certainly 22 years dumb.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:25 PM

The Wall actually syncs up pretty nicely with Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:26 PM

@7:25 you mad cause you can't afford? god i can just see you now.. go pickle some vegetables fag

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:28 PM

^I can afford. No issue there. But why the fuck would anyone want to sit in Yankee Stadium in a hundred degree heat watching this WAY past his prime nostalgia act's show on Diamond vision?

I can literally think of thousands of things I'd rather do on a summer evening.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:32 PM

also where are you getting these numbers from? 250? 500? go shave your face and get a job

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:32 PM

^haha this little suburban kid is mad that I'm making from of his 70 year old hero's, goofy dinner theater or steroids show. Hope you had a good time rockin with the blues lawyers and soccer moms.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:45 PM

What a joke-----anti-corporate, anti-"the man"?? When Live Nation does your whole tour, you lose all semblance of credibility. When Live Nation does the whole Wall tour, Waters loses whatever morsel of respect he may have had left.

What a tosser.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:50 PM

How you doin', mama? What the fuck you doing at this shit show?

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/rogerwaters/yankee/5.jpg

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:51 PM

The Wall is mad deep...

if you're 12 :(

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2012 7:52 PM

Roger Waters lost whatever morsel of respect he had left when he wrote the Final Cut.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2012 12:21 AM

Roger waters is an amazing artist. As are many new bands too. Why is everybody so crazy?

Pink Floyd is good music to trip
Out to...

Y'all need to open your mindz.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2012 12:38 AM

You want to see a show see Springsteen. He does what Roger can't do which is put on a show without glitz and glammer. Bruce also doesn't use backing tracks and varies his setlist. Tickets are also half the price.

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2012 10:25 AM

10:25 AHMEN! I would love to see Roger captivate an audience with just a guitar!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2012 11:22 AM

The wall and dark side of the moon are 2 of the biggest selling albums in the history of music and Roger Waters wrote 99% of both those albums FACT LOOK IT UP. Also Roger is worth over 150 million more then any of your sorry asses will ever be worth. Bunch of pathetic jealous losers make me laugh every time.

Posted by FACTS. | July 11, 2012 3:44 AM

"and if you think THE WALL in YANKEE STADIUM is just a nostalgia act like the eagles getting together in some guy's backyard in Canada then you need to re-evaluate your musical knowledge... name 3 more symbolic concerts in HISTORY than this one. i dare you"

AHHHHHHHHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAAHAHA

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2012 7:23 AM

FACT: Shania Twain's album "Come On Over" has sold more copies than "The Wall" or "Dark Side Of The Moon". FACT LOOK IT UP. My point (since you never made yours, 3:44) is that total sales says nothing of quality, it can only act as a barometer for public sentiment at a moment in time (public sentiment which has also been known to do some pretty horrid things over the millennia)

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2012 7:28 AM

All total sales says is that Roger Waters is in the 1%. Fucking greedy bastard.

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2012 7:34 AM

You don't think shilling a 30 year old album is a nostalga act?

Posted by Anonymous | July 11, 2012 7:42 AM

roger waters cool.
