"Security couldn't handle this shit! Black Lips fuckin killed it!!!" - Kyle Cameron

"Black Lips was fun. We tore down the barrier and security started fist fighting people. I'm soaked through." - Steve Lombardi

The Black Lips, who are known for their raucous live show, brought their usual antics to the 4Knots afterparty at Beekman Beer Garden at the South Street Seaport on Saturday night (7/14), but things got a little out of hand this time. The barricade was (not surprisingly) quickly ripped down by fans who broke into a sweaty pushing, moshing frenzy for the uncontrollable garage rockers. However, at this particular Black Lips show, the security guards were not having it. They began to rough up audience members who were getting crazy and allegedly ended up injuring some concertgoers. One of those claiming to be hurt emailed us and said, "getting dragged out in a choke hold is not my idea of a good time". He also sent us this picture he claims are "a few wounds inflicted by security"....

wounds

As shown in a video from the show which you can watch below, before going into "Modern Art," the band took to their mics to tell security to "calm the fuck down" and said, "You don't have to beat up anybody, it's just a rock and roll concert." A "Fuck that shit!" chant was also started and continued through the start of the song. The Village Voice, who presented the 4Knots festival and the Black Lips afterparty that this all went down at, point out that guitarist Cole Alexander, who had encouraged the crowd to "tear down that barrier" tried to help the fans who were getting hit, but he was shoved back on stage.

Many fans who were at the show took to twitter to talk about their experiences. @aewsome posted multiple tweets, saying, "Security has totally lost control of this Black Lips show. Arbitrarily roughing up people for no reason. Completely fucked up," and "Kids acting no different than any Black Lips show I've seen. This was seriously [some] of the roughest security I've seen."

UPDATE: The Village Voices issued a statement shortly after we posted this article.

As previously mentioned, earlier in the day there was also a fire at South Street Seaport while the actual 4Knots Music Festival was going on. You definitely can't say this year's fest (which Archers of Loaf headlined, but more about that in a bit), wasn't eventful.

The Black Lips video and more pictures, though they were mostly taken before things really got out of control, from the ruckus at Beekman Beer Garden, below...

First, a fire. Now, this. Are we going to be seeing riots at SS Seaport now? Hey, I'm all for it as long as some trendies get sucked in the swarm. Who knew that their kind would be capable of such tomfoolery?

"Still nowhere near as dangerous as a Slayer pit though."

Even a riot like the one I described wouldn't be.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:39 PM

"Roughest security I've seen "- I actually laughed out loud reading that. Pretty sheltered lives these people live.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:39 PM

i have been to 3 shows there. cool spot. expensive as shit for drinks but security indeed blows.

I bet the type of douchebag that would mosh at a black lips show would also post on this site saying hardcore is stupid. Stop whining you fuckin pussies.

Yeah that looks rough from the pictures. Especially the one with the guards sitting on the stage and the other guard smiling holding the barricade.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:52 PM

It's like Tompkins Square Park in 1988 all over again.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:55 PM

It couldnt have anything to do with the fact that theyre already irritated doing security for a band w a cute racist joke for a name, then have to deal with a crowd of white hipsters with a sense of entitlement?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 1:56 PM

More like the sausage lips by those pictures.
They also cant play their instruments at all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 2:04 PM

"Yeah that looks rough from the pictures."

I mentioned it briefly at the end of the post above, but our photographers, who had been at 4Knots since noon, left Beekman around 11:30pm, before the craziness started, so for what it's worth, the pictures are actually all from earlier.

Posted by brooklynvegan | July 16, 2012 2:06 PM

This is idiotic. A bunch of kids knocked over a barricade and act violently in the crowd (which is a HUGE insurance risk for the venue, the exact reason security is hired in the first place) and everyone gets pissed?

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 2:07 PM

"left Beekman around 11:30pm, before the craziness started, so for what it's worth, the pictures are actually all from earlier."

though you can see some photos with the barricades there, and some with them gone

I wish they got their asses handed to them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 2:47 PM

They were rioting because the band sucks, right?

it was rough though the security were choking out kids.. black lips are a punk band you fucks means they dont give a shit bout nuffin, including the fact that they didnt stop playing till 3 songs after security was roughing erbuddy up, then, the guitariist jumped into the crowd or something and only after that was the band effected by the security fucking everyone up. These were big dudes who mustve never seen a pit before, cuz, yeahi guess black lips are punk so they give no fucks but theyre on vice reciords so thyre for pansys like us, so the crowd is a light pushypit full of smiling kids singing along, not hardcore circlepits or thrashin but pansy pushin (u know) and this is some bull shit having nasty mean ass pissed off security guards bringing the barricades to the center of the pansy push pit to stop it, u get the snotty punk reaction of 'u cant stop this pit' and the pansy fun reaction of 'push the securty too' ends in headlocks and tears and fears and spilled beers... but black lips aignt no 70s era punk act, they give no fucks, theyre half empty running off bad dmt.. made no effort to really stop the security or ask them to get out of the pit, or they shoulda stopped playing and said 'security, please scram, these pansys wanna push'

If anyone got beat up or had their rights violated in any way for no reason whatsoever other than just being there then they had every right to call police and file a report and press charges at that time. The fact that they didnt means this wasnt a big deal to them b/c it either really wasnt as bad as theyre making it out to be and were caught up in the frenzy of it all and having a good time with it themselves, or they did some shit they werent supposed to be doing were asked to leave and tried to take advantage of the anti security stance the crowd was adopting and tried to resist. But this is the internet age where everybody acts like pussies over a shove and a push at a concert bc they have an outlet to publicly express it and stir up some shit. Some asshole that was admittedly "moshing" at a concert and posts a pic of a couple of bruises, even one being consistent from leaning and pushing or leaning hard on a steel barricade (under his arm) and we're supposed to march on city hall b/c he says security was too rough? Ive seen people go home with much worse than that from "mosh pits" at shows (thats another thing, if your still using the word s mosh pit, circle pit, or mosh in the day and age your a fuckin poser). Black Lips are about as punk as my mother and their crowd doesnt get shit about punk and hardcore, hence their whining on a message board about security not letting them do whatever they want to do, and security taking action against a crowd that was proudly "tearing down a barricade" that was supposed to be there at a concert and that the Black Lips had every right to ask not to be there in the first place in their contract, but why was it there? So that hipsters like this couldnt stage dive and then cry about it when they got hurt from doing it, which is exactly what happened. This is a bunch of assholes crying about what is a usual night at a show for real hardcore and punk rock kids, toughen up hipsters, if you want to play the part of a "punk crowd" your gonna have to take the consequences that come with trying to play it. You may think Black Lips are punk and thats fine for you, but whining like a bitch about being thrown out of a show by security on a forum is not punk at all.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 8:47 PM

Exactly what 2:15 says. The barricades there then it isnt, trying to say you dont see anything bad other than a crowd having a good time and security kind of doing nothing but sitting back and watching the crowd b/c you "left early" doesnt coincide with the timeline of your own photos. Nice try.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 8:53 PM

I was there and the security staff clearly had no idea what they were in for, and once faced with it, had no idea how to handle it. They were typical club bouncers, not used to working concerts.

But having said that, the fans who ripped down the security fences and jumped around the stage, threw drinks on equipment, etc... They deserved to get their ass beat down hard.

As a casual observer, this was one of the worst bands I have ever heard. I wish security had beat them up as well.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 9:02 PM

I read these guys are influenced by GG Allen. As someone who saw GG live, he would have chewed these guys to pieces and shit them out on stage. And it would have been worth the 15 dollars I wasted on this dreadful band.

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2012 10:06 PM

10:06 - It's GG Allin. You were there, so you should know.

Bike racks style barricade should be outlawed for use at concerts. It's worse than having no barricade. The venue and promoter are very lucky no one got seriously hurt.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 7:51 AM

both sides sucked. the hipsters shouldnt have taken the metal gate down or taunted the security with the Williamsburg "I can do what I want! Wah!" attitude. The security shouldnt have made a big deal about it or went agro on the Gentrifiers Anonymous meeting in progress at the show.

Sorry that baby got bruises, and i hate this phrase but MAN UP - NYC has turned into a big old crib for you neckbeard milkbabies

GREAT GREAT SHOW! Kid Congo and The Black Lips tore it up! I've been around a long time and this was a really fun crowd. The haters must only like bands that attract 90% males because there is no reason to complain when your surrounded by tons of cute girls and listening to some great rock and roll. Black Lips draw a very diverse crowd and thats a good thing.

Posted by Tim C | July 17, 2012 9:43 AM

^^ diverse in that they wear different colors of the same H&M and American Aparel clothes. I bet everyone there though about how unique they were before they all tweeted the same self congradulatory things. BL attracts the worst soon-to-be-suburbanites and yuppie girls. Might as well be a beer pong game for the brahs and sorority girls trying to be cool in back...

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 9:56 AM

No not quite 11:49. Ive just been in this city most of my life and had seen it change from a city of people that took responsibility for their own actions into a city of whining douchebags that blame their hurt feelings caused by the cosequences of their own actions on everybody else.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 10:01 AM

fuck everyone who went to this shit

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 10:07 AM

Bottom line... This crowd is acting like a bunch of whining pussies. Why wasnt security prepared for this? Because theres nothing about this band that is punk or hardcore, but the audience wants to try and emulate something they were never a part of and never would be part of its too hard or aggressive for their sensitive egos. This show was pretty much a punk rock fantasy camp, man the fuck up and stop crying, your dime sized bruise will be gone in a couple of days.

Posted by jack | July 17, 2012 10:24 AM

"Dime sized bruise" 10:24?

Are we looking at the same photo? It seems to me that that poor young man suffered severe injuries. And while we can all clearly see his horrific physical injuries, what about his emotional injuries? He might never be able to listen to another Black Lips songs again. PSD anyone? This is very serious business. The Black Lips should hold a benefit show to pay for this brave young man's medical expenses. This young man is a hero.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 10:48 AM

C'mon now. The guy is still feeling the after-effects of this melee. In fact his venerable parents have made an appointment for him with the city's most highly regarded pinch specialist. We need pinch awareness now more than ever.

Also, same sex kissing onstage is more Madonna and Britney than it is GG Allin.

Posted by Jack M. | July 17, 2012 10:55 AM

I thought these comments about the severe abuse documented in the photo were just exaggerations expressed by the typical BV commenter. But I just looked at the photo, now I'm staring at this bruised boy through tear-filled eyes. Is this what humanity has come to? How could one human beat another human that badly? We are one race, the human race; we have to start acting like it. I'm going to light a prayer candle for the bruised boy (who will know be known as BB) in hopes that he will overcome the physical and emotional abuse that he has suffered.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2012 6:44 PM

6:44, I am not trying to be funny, I am just expressing my disgust with how savagely BB was beaten. I'm sorry if you're looking for laughs, this is not about laughs. This is about the rights of another human being violated. If you want I can tell a fart joke that will appeal to you, but really, how can you laugh when there are atrocities like this going on? Godspeed BB!

it takes black people to keep white people in line

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2012 3:54 PM

Sounds like most people commenting weren't at the show. Here is some insight: The show was great at first, everyone was having fun, until people from the back started pushing, when that happened the crowd broke through the gate. Security violently ripped people out of the the front even though they couldn't escape if they wanted.

I've been to a lot of shows. When someone falls the security should help, not drag them out by their hair.

I was at this concert! I was right in front of the barricade gate and sober enough to see that the security guards were having a very hard time keeping everyone as safe as possible. As I am a tiny person, they kept trying to send me behind the barricade, which wasn't fun but I understand they were trying to keep me from getting crushed by the drunk people jumping around me (I was able to hold my own without them!) The drunk people were just out of control, as usual, and the security guards did not know how to properly handle it without angering people.
