"He has been identified as James Holmes, 24, of the 1600 block of Paris Street in Aurora. Holmes was a graduate student in neurosciences at University of Colorado Denver Medical Campus"

So, I guess being a smart guy does not preclude you from being a psychopath? Who knew.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 12:37 PM

That killers show went the same way the Roseland Radiohead show would have gone if BP was putting it on.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 12:42 PM

@12:18 you mean too soon to be a jackass, never around here...

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 12:50 PM

Does anyone find it completely ridiculous that a parent brought a 3 month old and a 6 yr old to a midnite movie screening - For some reason this has blown my mind more than the shooting -

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 1:12 PM

^ oh, I love hipster sanctimony

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 1:13 PM

1:12, that's pretty typical though... i'm not surprised at all. every movie i go to lately has a screaming baby

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 1:24 PM

12:37, Kaczynski was a smart guy too.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 1:51 PM

Exactly my point, 1:51.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 2:00 PM

Hey, isn't Barack Obama supposed to be so smart too? I wonder what kind of snakes are living up in that head of his.

β€œThey say that 'Guns don't kill people, people kill people.' Well I think the gun helps. If you just stood there and yelled BANG, I don't think you'd kill too many people.”

― Eddie Izzard

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 2:35 PM

My wife saw Magic Mike with friends and said two women brought a ~10 year old boy with them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 3:01 PM

2:35 - no guns in UK (where Eddie Izzard is from) yet about 11 homicides per week in jolly old Blighty. Kinda erodes the joke a bit, since I kinda doubt that more than 560 people died from hearing someone say BANG.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 3:53 PM

@235 i think you mean (the cops have) no guns in the UK. criminals definitely do.

big sentences for guns in the uk though, so they all use blades. uk teens/thugs are scary as shit compared to the crap we have around here.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 3:56 PM

"i think you mean (the cops have) no guns in the UK. criminals definitely do."

It is illegal to own a gun in UK. When the gun control people start jabbering over in US, they use this as an example of what to do. My point was that the guns are not the things that are perpetrating the murders, it is the evil in men's hearts (brought forth in action using whatever is available)

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 4:11 PM

Excellent point 3.53.

Cos, y'know, 560 murders per year in the UK is the same as the 16,000 murders per year in the United States.

Not a numbers person, I'm guessing.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 6:23 PM

@623 The population to land mass ratio of the respective nations is more relevant.

Posted by You are correct in that you are not a numbers person. | July 20, 2012 6:58 PM

Population in United Kingdom = 62,262,000
Population in United States = 313,949,000 (5x UK)

UK homicide rate per 100,000 population = 1.23 (2011)
US homicide rate per 100,000 population = 4.8 (2011) (4x UK)

So 6:23, not sure if you were being knowingly intellectually dishonest or if you are just not that bright, but comparing apples to apples yields a picture that is a bit more explainable than your excitable opinionated sarcasm.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 7:08 PM

^ thanks dude. The tool at 6:23 clearly had an opinion that drove his need to misrepresent the numbers. Guess he's not really a facts guy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 7:25 PM

Nice one 7.08, you re-presented the figures and simply reiterated 6.23's point.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 7:46 PM

^ wrong again, cupcake, 6:23 did nothing to explain the population or physical size difference between UK and US, which is kind of funny given his view of himself as "a numbers person". 7:08 (me) at least accounted for population differences (which is kind of important to scale two values based on several orders of magnitude difference in population size). I would point out more, but I am not sensing that you are genuinely interested in hearing something that does not align with your pre-formed opinion. I do not myself see incontrovertible evidence refuting the fact that the more important factor in murder cases is the murderer rather than the gun.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 8:03 PM

Oh dear. Perhaps an assumption was made that people already know the respective populations of the two countries involved. My bad.

People really do tie themselves in knots trying to ignore the failure and terrible consequences of the gun policy in this country (we are really big! That's why there more shootings!)

Eddie Izzars suggested that gun policy had an important role in the relatively high rate of gun crime. The numbers and facts back him up whatever way you present them.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2012 8:15 PM

Thank you 8:15, for proving my point better than I could have. You are intellectually dishonest and only acknowledge that which makes it through your opinion filter. Must be comforting to live where nothing is out of place; reality is a bit more nuanced, a bit more complex. Even for a numbers person.

To clear up a little something, NY was NEVER onsale at arcadefire.com today. I was refreshing all morning and it wasn't there. Whether it was ever supposed to be or not is the confusion. Merge said it would and neither they nor Arcade Fire has said anything to clear that up.
