The Young / Census at 285 Kent 6/29/2012
Austin's The Young were in town last week for three NYC shows the last of which was at 285 Kent on Friday (6/29), where they were joined by Census, the punk-Americana of Nude Beach (who also played the night before at Tommy's), and country-inflected rock of Zach Cale & The Rain Band.
Having seen both The Young and Nude Beach before, the band that left the most impression was Census. Though the band features a member of Cults, Census has nothing to do with them sonically. 90s are clearly a hallmark for this NYC band, who lean heavier on shoe-gaze in their Smashing Pumpkins-style power pop. Excellent live show too, and though their output is extremely limited, you can download their EP at Bandcamp now and stream it below.
Perhaps the most important discovery of the evening... 285 Kent now has A/C! Despite the standing temperature/humidity outside, the space was a cool 74 degrees having just installed a major unit the size of a pair of refrigerators in the space. Its an infinite improvement for the space and a beyond pleasant surprise for such a notoriously hot space.
