Bill Doss in Austin (more by Tim Griffin)
Bill Doss

"Nuçi's Space is a non-profit health and music resource center in Athens, GA. The aim of the organization is to prevent suicide by providing obstacle free treatment for musicians suffering from depression and other such disorders as well as to assist in the emotional, physical and professional well-being of musicians."
The cause of Bill Doss's untimely death has not been revealed, but "In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to Nuci's Space, a local musician support & resource center." That said, Athens-Clarke County coroner Sonny Wilson told an Athens paper that "No evidence of foul play or suicide is evident and Doss had no history of medical problems, Wilson said."

The note, via the band's publicist, also reads: "We ask that you please respect the privacy of the Elephant 6 family at this time. Our hearts are with them, and we will release any further details and statements as it's fit in the days to come."

A memorial is set for this Saturday, August 4 (2PM-4PM) at The Fabulous 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA.

thanks for the info but I think your headline is misleading and only will serve to speculate he committed suicide when according to this article, suicide was not evident...

Agree but it was probably suicide. All the article points to is that there wasn't a big hole in his head and note beside him.

Definitely misleading--in Athens, tons of musicians donate time and money to Nuci's Space. It's a local institution.

This is how rumors get started, BV. Do the responsible thing and change the damn headline!

I Have Been Floated is such a good song.

headline changed

Insinuation is not good in a situation like this (Especially when all the details haven't even been revealed yet). Change the headline. It's disrespectful to the family and friends of Bill.

Thanks, BV!

"Agree but it was probably suicide"

Who the fuck are you, Quincy ? "Not evident" covers way more than a hole in someone's head... (ie, not finding a note, bottle of pills, hard drugs, etc) but I guess you know more than the coroner..

Shame on you BV for buckling under pressure from a few above and changing the headline. It was fine the way it is

No one knows what happened yet and it is a terrible loss. Great guy. For what it's worth though, the talk among Athens musicians and insiders is that it probably was suicide. Tragic.

Please, please change the headline of this post as what it implies couldn't be more inaccurate & hurtful. I can appreciate how looking at the Nuci's Space site it appears to be solely about suicide prevention, but in fact they do much more in the Athens community such as provide practice space for bands, health care, and youth programs. They were likely chosen as they're the best equipped musician's resource non-profit in the area. It's a beautiful and generous choice.

Anyone who knew or even met Bill briefly knew him as a bright, open and joyful person. While I can understand the morbid speculation about suicide, it couldn't be further from the realm of possibility. I would also urge people commenting on this thread to remember that you're talking about a real person, the shock and hurt of whose death is still fresh among his friends.

"For what it's worth though, the talk among Athens musicians and insiders is that it probably was suicide. Tragic."

Bullshit.. as I'm among those you call insiders and theres no talk of suicide.

The internet is stupid when it comes to situations like this, but your motivations in posting that original headline are shameful. Shame on you. Bill's songs contain a magic that should not be tainted by your (or anyone else's) TMZesque speculations. Even leaving in that brief summary of Nuci's Space above is manipulative -- leave a link to the organization, and if anyone is interested, they can click on it and learn for themselves. His life deserves more than what than what you're allowing him -- as is the case with many of the artists whose deaths you report.

"there's a new place we can take
among the leaves, among the trees
but until we leave, all in all, all is all that we perceive"

if they don't want speculation, they should release more information

"if they don't want speculation, they should release more information"

There is no information to report yet, genius. Do you have any idea how long autopsies can take? It could be months before they get the results back. No one is trying to hide anything.

Hmm. No one has any idea at all?!? C'mon Athens.

Posted by Anonymous | August 1, 2012 10:33 PM

Yeah, the suicide speculation is really inappropriate (albeit par for the course with BV) when the little said so far from Athens folk seems to suggest that it was some sort of spontaneous, unexpected medical issue. There's a person on Reddit who's established as an EMT in Athens and apparently received the emergency call to Bill. While obviously this is to be taken with a grain of salt, he's posted about his job before and claims to not have known who Bill was... he said that he went quickly and peacefully with a guitar in his hands. So take that for what you will...

Just because someone dies young without an apparent noticeable cause...DOES NOT MEAN it's suicide. He was my 1st cousin, classmate and friend. He was a phenomenal musician, incredibly talented, artistic beautiful soul who LOVED his family more than anything. Shame on you who are so quick to decide and assume on his cause of death. All I know is he is gone and whatever the cause, is a senseless tragedy. Have a little respect for his grieving family and friends. Rejoice in his life and how he lived it...because he lived it WELL. LOVE and MISS YOU, BILL. Fly high and sing loud....

Thanks, Lee Ann. I think it speaks volumes that most of the comments here are anonymous.

I agree Neil. Instead of playing the guessing game, maybe they should support this charity. It's what Bill would have wanted. Wasn't able to make it to the memorial but I heard they were having to do a guest list because so many ppl wanted to come but the place couldn't hold them all. Some even came from England just to pay tribute. He was amazing. We are all still shocked that he was taken from us too soon but how can I be sad knowing where he is today. He is singing for the Lord and that makes me happy! Shame on those who choose to speculate...shame, shame!

Can you email me with some pointers on how you made your site look this awesome, I would appreciate it.

Posted by miniclip | August 29, 2012 3:12 PM

I think we should think about how Bill lived and not speculate or get hung up on how he died. It really doesn't change his impact as a person on those he loved and those who loved him.
