Blur/The Specials/New Order, Hyde Park 8/12/2012

Blur's frontman and driving force, Damon Albarn, had said this might be the band's final performance. But then Albarn has always been a competitive soul, and you wonder if he's just trying to outdo the culmination of the Olympics for significance.

For a while tonight, that appears to be a losing battle. Blur are preceded by the BBC's closing ceremony coverage, shown on a giant screen. As union flags flutter, the 80,000-strong crowd bellows along to the national anthem and cheers as Prince Harry takes his seat. When Madness kick off the entertainment in the stadium, Hyde Park dances along, and you wonder whether everyone's forgotten they've paid £55 to see Blur.

Then, abruptly, Madness are cut mid-song and the screens withdraw to reveal our headliners, under a replica of Albarn's beloved Westway. The band launch into an incendiary Girls and Boys, and, for the next two hours, Hyde Park is theirs. - [The Guardian]

Blur headlined the official post-Closing-Ceremony concert in London's Hyde Park, a capper to the last two weeks of Olympics mania. The two-hour set had all the big singles (except "There's No Other Way"), their new song "Under the Westway," and a nice selection of deep cuts (what, no "Blue Jeans"?) that few could really grumble with. Grumbling about the sound was prevalent, however, as Hyde Park noise ordinances kept the volume a little too low for some in the back.

What could be Blur's last-ever show is already up on iTunes and here for those who want a musical souvenir. It'll be released on CD next week.

Of course, it wasn't just Blur, as the concert also featured sets by The Specials, New Order (who have North American shows coming up) and youngsters Bombay Bicycle Club. Photos and setlists of all the band's from Sunday night's Hyde Park concert are below.

Wow, someone's got a serious boner for Blur! 4 pics of New Order (er, maybe Old Order at this point?) and like a gazillion for Blur?

Great Blur setlist! Blur have not played the USA with Graham since 1999! THEY NEED TO PLAY NYC SOON!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 9:58 AM

I can't believe Blur headlined over New Order and Specials. Pretty Lame!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 9:59 AM

^umm you serious? Blur have always been bigger in the UK then both those bands..

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:00 AM

Thats a hell of a show

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:04 AM

"bigger in the UK"

So glad we have you chiming in on a NYC blog to set us straight on what lame bands get humped more on the islands. Your outrage is pretty freaking funny actually, speaks to your provincial small town perspective. Just what NYC needs, more small town twats schooling us who live here on what life is about. More, please!

10:07 Needs to shut the fuck up

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:10 AM

The press in London said the sound was so low that midway from the stage it was inaudible. That's a shame. What is it with all of the volume being turned down?

Couldn't be worse than our own Central Park Summerstage!

10:10 needs Advil and some salve to stop that butthurt LULZ

Fuck anyone that says New Order sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:43 AM

(2nd) 10:35: Duh.

It's like, yeah, we get it. You like new Order more than Blur (and apparently it's cooler to do so to up your hipster cred or whatever), but Blur is more popular with the general public (even if I don't like them myself).

Ha, the next type of comment I was expecting was "Radiohead was sooooooo much better when they only played in front of 10 people. I was so there."

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:44 AM

Radiohead used to be good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:46 AM

Blur in the U.S. please!

10:44 Ha ha, you are way off Skippy. Wanna try again?

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:49 AM

Blur is better than The Beatles. They wrote Wonderwall.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:49 AM

Note that Bernard Sumner is WEARING A NEW ORDER SHIRT.
Who is douchey enough to wear their own band shirt onstage besides Metallica circa 1986?

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 10:52 AM

The Grateful Dead wore Grateful Dead shirts and they were cool.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 11:25 AM

10:49: No. And especially since, you don't have a rebuttal of your own (just as predicted).

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 11:59 AM

11:40: It sounds like you are, 10:07 (and all the others). Have you come up with a rebuttal yet. Oh, and even though I hate to further contribute to a vomit-inducing meme...

STILL WAITING IN 2012!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 12:15 PM

10:52 your observation just shattered my dreams but seriously they opened with ELEGIA which is like amazing. Like battery in your leg amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 12:41 PM

It should have been Oasis. Oasis is the greatest British band to ever come out of Britain or even England. Even better than U2!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 1:04 PM

^ Agreed. Don't Look Back In Anger is also a smashing song!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 1:21 PM

NEW ORDER IS THE GREATEST BRITISH BAND.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 1:22 PM

arctic monkeys are the best band to come out of england, or anywhere really. just ask the old guy from long island, he has the most refined taste and cultivated ear of any music listener, anywhere. he would know.

2:05 Who played at the closing ceremonies but not this gig.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 2:14 PM

New Order are definitely the better band, but Blur is riding the whole reunion/finalshow bullshit they've been doing for about the past five years.

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 2:25 PM

^2012-2009= 3 years...

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 2:27 PM

If you grew up on Long Island, you should kill yourself. You're only wasting our time. That said, Blur and New Order suck rhino penis.

I lived in Manhattan for 10 years. I have also traveled to several countries and I listen to just about anything. I recently moved to Long Island to raise children and live in a beautiful home with my lovely wife. I love the beaches, the restaurants, the space away from the douchebag hipsters that spend their days in cubicles writing insulting shit on this blog.

Strong Island!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 3:37 PM

Gotta love the false sense of entitlement that people have here! Oooooh, someone's from Long Island! They are SOOOOOOO beneath me (or "us", if you're counting your snobbish, trendy buddies who you high-five for every lame (oops, I'm sorry, "awesome") comment you snark about)!

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 4:42 PM

Does anyone talk about music on BV anymore?

Did they ever? Not "this band sucks" or "epic show" etc.. Music. Ya know, songs, instruments, amps etc...

Posted by Anonymous | August 14, 2012 6:24 PM

Oatmeal's good when it's what it's supposed to be, which is not brine, but is in fact oatmeal. When oatmeal's brine, it's not good, it's bad. Because that's not what it's supposed to be. Brine, that is. When oatmeal's brine, it's not good. Because that's not what it's supposed to be. Oatmeal's what it is supposed to be. Oatmeal, that is. Because that is what it's supposed to be, which is not brine. Which can never be brine.

Oh--Oh--Please don't hurt me. Fuck you.

I'm from Austin. So according to you, Austin > Austin, which doesn't even make sense. So fucking congratulations.

Just kidding, I'm actually from AustinVegan, which is not even a real place, but rather an entity, or a web-site, if you will. Actually, I'm not from there either. Actually, I am, but wait, no I'm not. Now I am again, and now once again I am not. Now I am. Now I'm not. Now--

Posted by Anonymous | August 15, 2012 6:57 PM

No, it's where they breed Bonkers Jester Entourage fans.

Lived in Manhattan for 10 years huh?

Probably some rich asshole who had everything handed down to him by his parents.

Fuck. You.

Posted by Sam | August 16, 2012 5:32 AM

This is great - midwest transplants thinking they are in any way superior to Long Island. It's like a child shooting you with his "ray gun" which is actually a stick. Pathetic, but funny at their expense at the same time.
