Joseph Arthur at Bowery Ballroom, May 2012 (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Joseph Arthur

Joseph Arthur got some crummy news today:

NYC towed my van and sold it with amps and equipment and so much art in it. It's a white 2003 dodge ram. Sold yesterday. Please help recover. Anyone with any knowledge or help (lawyers) into how to deal with a city taking and selling your stuff would be greatly appreciated. I just found out about this and cant think straight but so much priceless (to me) was inside. Over 40 large scale paintings rolled in canvas. I'm gutted.

...The van wasn't towed and sold the same day. It was towed from a place where it was getting repaired and sold when i was in Mexico under the impression that it was back at the shop.

City of New York says buy information is confidential, so if you have any info on Joseph Arthur's van -- maybe you bought it? -- you can contact him via his Facebook page. Hope your van/stuff back!

Joseph has a couple upcoming NYC shows: He plays City Winery on Monday, August 27 with Teddy Thompson (tix) and will also be at ATP NY.

What!!?!? A musician had their priceless gear taken when the left it carelessly in a van!

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 5:52 PM

Haha, this deadbeat got what he deserved.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 5:52 PM

I don't understand. Please explain why his van was towed and why it was sold. This story is missing the explanation of what the hell happened.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 6:23 PM

Seriously, who leaves a van full of "valuable" "artwork" at a chop shop on Willet's Point while he goes to Mexico?

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 6:26 PM

Any word on how much does he owe the city?
Also, was his crack pipe left inside the van?

Posted by me | August 24, 2012 7:23 PM

People should stop making art.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 7:25 PM

He should be excited that someone actually bought his art.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 7:29 PM

This story is loaded with holes. For starters why would you leave valuables in a van, you were leaving at garage? First bit of stupidity. Secondly, a car usually has to be at a tow yard for a LONG TIME before it's sold off. Dude did not have his shit in order it seems.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 7:35 PM

He plays NY all the time. Why does he need a van? Just roll it in a dumpster from venue to venue.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 7:44 PM

I'm the guy who bought it, but I wish to remain anonymus.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 7:44 PM

this is terrible and the comments here are always so immature and senseless. karma will come back at you jerks.

i'm not a big fan of his music, but this is a terrible story.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:10 PM

And that's why you always leave a note.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:35 PM

Why would the city tow a car from a repair shop?

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:49 PM

@8:35 - priceless.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:50 PM

he's asking for some help so anyone who can help him should do so. as for the rest of you fucking children, keep spending your days trolling anonymously on comment boards, pants around your ankles and dicks in hands, waiting for mommy to call you for dinner. losers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:53 PM

Of course it's terrible 8:10pm, but it really does seem to be his own damn fault. 1) the city had to have had possession quite awhile, 2) who leaves a van at a shop with valuable crap (or maybe it's just plain crap) in it? For apparently a really long time, and 3)why did the city seize it in the first place - there's usually an owner fuck-up of some sort involved...

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:54 PM

The City will generally only tow a scofflaw car if it is parked on a city street. If it is in possession of a repair shop, in a garage or on private or commercial property, then the CIty does not have the right to tow it. There seems to be something missing from this story, or the facts are wrong.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:59 PM

Who? What? Why? Nevermind. This is stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:09 PM

'anonymous' must be on this page 40 some odd times. and yet @7:44

come on man! ;)

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:49 PM

this makes no sense

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:57 PM

He went to another country and didn't pay attention to where his van was?

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:58 PM

this shit is redic

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:26 PM

sounds like this is COMPLETELY his own fault. fuck off & die moron.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 1:04 AM

He left his "amps and equipment" in the van when getting it serviced in a repair shop? That's the winner of the musical Darwin award, or complete bullshit. Either way, moron.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 1:16 AM

Uniqlo guy is in my prayers tonight...

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 1:31 AM

who dis fat ass nigga?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 1:33 AM

So you think the story is incomplete? That it seems fishy because there aren't enough details? What, do you think you're reading the New York Times? This is Brooklyn Vegan, fer crying out loud. But go ahead and assume the worst without knowing a fucking thing.

Posted by Anonnnymous | August 25, 2012 2:33 AM

this bloodmouth was probably getting his rocks off watching bullfighting. I hope you get your van back, and then a raging bull jumps out of it and gores you.

Posted by hardline warrior | August 25, 2012 3:13 AM

great blog

Posted by jocuri | August 25, 2012 4:22 AM

yeah, I need help paying for a new roof. fuck this guy. this is not a terrible story it's a useless story. pay your way.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 10:08 AM

Next time you go away make sure you leave your van empty and parked securely and place all of your valuables in a safe place or in someones care-
If you go to Mexico and leave a van full of shit at a repair shop in Brooklyn whatever happens is your fault
Stop crying about it and be smarter with your valued possessions next time

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 10:27 AM

Sounds like a win-win for everyone involved.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 2:28 PM

Jospeh Arthur is a piece of shit. Couldn't have happened to a better guy.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 3:54 PM

This deadbeat needs to grow up.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 5:04 PM

he should have parked it on a street in brooklyn overnight and then it would have been stolen

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2012 8:08 PM

Im gonna start a Kickstarter to help with his cab ride to Rikers...

Posted by Blag | August 26, 2012 8:39 PM

His explanation is dumber than the story. The only person who can get a vehicle out of a city lot is the owner, unless he got a notarized letter. Judging from the fact that no one on his or his "managers" side made a phone call or used google to find any information out, its your own damn fault. The city auctioning of your stuff isn't right and sucks, but the city selling your stuff because you're an idiot is well deserved.

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2012 9:18 PM

no sense in crying over spilt hummus...

Posted by Anonymous | August 26, 2012 10:47 PM

yes his further explanation clears up alot of details, but only makes him look worse. very irresponsible, and clearly 100% his fault.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 1:49 AM

there are too many holes in this story. Something is not adding up.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 7:58 AM

He is clearly irresponsible and wanting a pity party. He had outstanding tickets and carelessly left all his "valuables" to strangers while he is out of the country. Where was his manager during the timeline of events? If he gets a good lawyer who can prove what was actually in his van or the value of his art. Being a singer songwriter should not be his way out of this mess, he needs to learn to be responsible.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 8:09 AM

You guys are total dicks. Believe it or not, not everyone has all day to doddle at coffeehouses trolling BV on your graduation present MacBook and being wacky and creative. Joseph is a good guy, and very busy, and the bro seems to have really gotten a bad deal here.

Now I don't expect that you hipster idiots will have any sympathy for his plight (because after all how does this effect you?) but maybe you could spend the few minutes that you would spend spewing your hate and maybe use it looking for a job? Maybe? Could you do that maybe?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 10:37 AM

^^ the fuck?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 10:56 AM

All you people standing up for this moron are out of your minds. Would any of you leave a van, that has many outstanding tickets, full of "priceless art" and equipment anywhere in NYC and go to Mexico for an undetermined amount of time? I saw this guy open for the Afghan Whigs in May. He was pretty good, but really? Get a storage unit you douche.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 10:59 AM

From his blog piece...

"There were three outstanding tickets from awhile ago on the van (not literally on the van), which I was assured were taken care of, but were not. The van was brought to a shop for repairs, which I had assumed was a relatively safe place. It had been worked on there before without incident, which is one reason I was ok with equipment and art in it."

Already more holes in that one paragraph than in Spongebob.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:03 AM

Hahaha even after knowing that his vehicle was at risk of being impounded due to his tickets, he still chose to leave all of his valuable belongings in his van. That is really just ridiculously stupid; there's no doubting that.

Also, it's obvious that "I was assured the tickets were taken care of" means "I never paid them and stopped getting mail about them, so I assumed the NYC DOT had forgotten about me" in artist talk.

This seems like a borderline scam for some sort of Kickstarter fund a la Cake Shop, but this time even less deserved (by the way, Cake Shop has yet to come through on any of the 'rewards' bought through it's PledgeMusic drive).

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:17 AM

This guy is like an 8 year old kid. He fails to take responsibility for anything. If their are tickets on your van YOU have to take care of it and or YOU have to make sure it is taken care of. But nope it wasn't taken care of and this guy is in Mexico 'having the time of his life.' Seems like an irresponsible suspended adolescent to me.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:59 AM

if he was going on vacation then why would it matter if he his small apartment is cluttered with his art and amps. THAT i don't get. also, why can't he pay for his own parking tickets... why does his manager from Canada have to pay for them. Seems like a lot more work to do the correspondence. Again, a hole that makes no sense. Its easy to blame the world for your own irresponsibility i suppose. I can totally see this bullshit becoming the prelude to a future fundraiser. For all we know the van could have had repair work more than its value. Did he have car insurance? none of this makes sense, but that part that makes the least sense is that the sole fact that he is an artist people have forgiven him for his carelessness. What one does for a living should not give them special treatment from the city.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2012 12:03 AM

Poor Joseph. I hope this problem was resolved. We all do.
