Frank Ocean at Lollapalooza 2012 (more by James Richards IV)
Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean, who The Afghan Whigs covered recently, has just been added to ATP NY, which the Afghan Whigs curated. The festival goes down on Pier 36 from September 21-23. Tickets are still available. Surely a live collaboration is not out of the question.

Frank Ocean also recently cancelled a number of European festival appearances and his dates over there opening for Coldplay. According to a note from Frank on the Way Out West Facebook page:

Let me start by saying I feel like an asshole right now but a tough decision had to be made in regard to my schedule over the next months and the casualties of that decision include my appearances at upcoming festivals in Europe and my opening slot of the European leg of the Coldplay world tour. Sorry as fuck, I'll be back if you'll have me.
One of those dates was the Coldplay show in Hanover, DE which falls right in the middle of ATP NY. A list of all affected dates, along with and updated ATP NY flier (Frank Ocean's name included) and an MP3 of the Afghan Whigs' cover of Frank Ocean's "Lovecrimes" are below.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:44 PM

which night?

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:44 PM

Can everyone start getting real and admitting Frank's album isn't all that great?

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:48 PM

Uh - seriously ATP? Was Lionel Ritchie busy Friday night? We need some autotune like a hole in the head. This festival is fucked (just like your fans are).....

Posted by Hosed Fan | August 17, 2012 2:49 PM

what a disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:49 PM

Who's betting that's last ATP ever?

Posted by ME | August 17, 2012 2:49 PM

Does anyone really think these artists really curate the band for the festivals? I'd say they get a handful of picks then management and agents step in.. Really where is the link between Frank Ocean and Afghan Whigs..

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:55 PM

Let's face it. This is at least partly due to the poor curation skills of Greg Dulli and the Whigs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:56 PM

did you not see their Frank Ocean cover above, 2:55?

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:57 PM

Frank Ocean and ATP also take this moment to announce their new cologne DESPERATION. One whiff and you'll never go to an ATP event again.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:57 PM

"where is the link?"
afghan whigs have covered one of his songs. greg is a fan.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:57 PM

@2:55

1 - Dulli/ Afghan Whigs are only curating Saturday, the day that they are playing.

2 - Afghan Whigs cover Love Crimes, a Frank Ocean song.

With that said, I'm super bummed that he got added to the bill as I was hoping for someone I actually effing like!

Hey ATP, just because someone is popular doesn't mean he's popular with YOUR crowd!

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 2:59 PM

The most pathetic detail is ATP now billing Ocean OVER the fucking CURATORS of the event. How fucking sad is that? Game over.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:00 PM

Shit > ATP New York

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:00 PM

How did ATP fall so far in just a couple years? I heard nothing but great things about the upstate NY events and they had pretty great lineups. Pier 36 + This Lineup = no way in hell.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:05 PM

I wish the Dirty Three would remove themselves from this godawful lineup and just do a headlining show in NYC.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:09 PM

Unless the ATP organizers have been on a massive coke binge since the last Kutcher's event, there really is no excuse for all this garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:20 PM

then i say something negative

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:21 PM

So now Frank Ocean gets top billing?

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:26 PM

A once in a generation artist.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:36 PM

So COLDPLAY's opener is now headlining an ATP festival, eh?

It's ok, atp.

Seriously, everything else about IBYM US has been just groovy.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:42 PM

@ 3:36 Once in a generation artist? How desperate are you for some arbitrary person/place/event to give meaning to your pathetic life? He's released ONE FUCKING ALBUM. You've got another 20 years to go before that doesn't sound like bullshit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:45 PM

F. Ocean is horseshite.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:53 PM

i really like him!
wasnt goin to go to this-but now i am!
dont be so down in the dumps guys!
its fridayyyyy!

Posted by tom burke | August 17, 2012 3:55 PM

Can godspeed announce some nyc dates besides ATP? There is room in their schedule between 9/24 and 10/1 i believe.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 3:56 PM

Wow, that was unexpected.... I'm glad we got a refund for our ATP tickets. Alright Dirtbombs, please come down to DC and play a show before/after ATP. And yeah, seeing the Dirty Three at 6th & I is gonna be amazing!

Posted by BTH | August 17, 2012 4:00 PM

I'm a fan of both artists, but I really hope this isn't on Saturday. I don't need my one Afghan Whigs experience tainted by otherwise indifferent people shoving their way up to the front to see Frank Ocean.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:04 PM

According to their website, he's headlining Friday.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:10 PM

The festival with an identity crisis.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:13 PM

"The festival with an identity crisis."

Then it must be the perfect venue for Frank Ocean.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:24 PM

Sad. Sure glad I didn't get tickets this year.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:25 PM

2:57(1) - What does the fact that Afghan Whigs are fans of and cover Frank Ocean have anything to do with the fact that they're partially to blame as mediocre ATP curators, at least with respect to the night they're playing. If anything, it reinforces the comment.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:28 PM

I would have been happy to see mark mcguire solo friday, saturday and sunday than this crap off la

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:36 PM

Let's see, for $75 on Saturday, its Afghan Whigs, Roots, José González, Mark Lanegan, Chavez, Dirty Three, The Antlers, Dirtbombs,Scrawl,Emeralds,Vetiver,Afterhour,Charles Bradley And The Extraordinaires and Joseph Arthur - and some spank thinks this is a disaster? Here's an easy solution - don't go. Its going to be good -real good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:48 PM

I don't mean to stoke the fires of all the idiot haters that have been talking shit about ATP for years, but it does worry me that on their site, they no longer say "+ More Bands To Be Confirmed" on each day.

This can't possibly be it, can it?

It's not so much that there's not "enough" on the bill (with the exception of Friday), but that, from all indications about the venue, that they're not going to operate two stages. The staggered performances have always been one of the strongest assets of that festival, because you weren't subjected to things that didn't suit you. If that is abandoned, the overall quality drops CONSIDERABLY.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 4:57 PM

@4:57 on the FAQ it says there are two stages, the main one indoors and a second one outside

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 5:58 PM

No black people will attend ATP.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 6:54 PM

Leave out "black" and you're spot on, 6:54.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 6:56 PM

Thanks for the update, 6:58. While outdoor pop-up venues are typically shit, it's still better than the alternative.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 7:02 PM

Godspeed has dates all around new york, Philly, Boston etc. I doubt because of the serious run they did last year that they will announce another date. There is still hope for Dirty Three though...I think.

This is not only a pretty weak line up, but the move to have a festival in a city that typically hosts these artists on their own with full sets is pretty lame. Also, most of these bands have been on the fest circuit over the summer i.e. Bradley.

I dumped my tickets and all I feel I will be missing is the Make-Up, as you have options to see most of the line up in the tri-state area.

This will be a fest without feeling.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 7:07 PM

This is like when Coachella landed Prince to headline at the last minute in 2008... except Ocean ain't Prince and this lineup ain't Coachella's lineup. So I guess it's just like a really really really shitty reminder of the good old days.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 7:25 PM

Not sure how this counts as an identity crisis. ATP has always put on hip hop acts...is r&b that out of character?

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 9:22 PM

seems like most of the people complaining either a) were never going to go regardless, b) are still pissed about louis c.k. or c) are the usual bv hater. blah blah blah

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 9:33 PM

I'd go if pussy riot gets added to the lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2012 9:45 PM

stop whining indie pussies. Doesn't anyone wanna hear ANYTHING besides the Douchey Projectors?

Frank Ocean's got raw, real talent. Wouldn't have been asked to write the HOOKS on watch the throne if he weren't genius.

come on dudes. open your ears.

Posted by Summer Fridays | August 18, 2012 2:13 AM

You guys are a bunch of bitch balls who do nothing but complain.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 5:28 AM

AW and GYBE ... what the fuck are you nancy boys bitching about?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 5:29 AM

If it was Billy Ocean I be excited...cause it be at least funny...frank you suck.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 10:02 AM

Afghan Whigs, having failed doing it their way, resort to Frank Ocean covers. LMFAO

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 1:48 PM

The Whigs are really keel

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 2:26 PM

hate t5, but no bullshit franks show there was one of the best things i saw this year easy.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 3:28 PM

gonna get moved to pier 63. then gonna get moved to my roof.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 3:47 PM

Agreed it's desperate. The top billing for Ocean is sad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2012 10:24 PM

Frankie gonna suck off all the boys at the Pier 63 glory hole

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2012 12:58 AM

All of you waaambulance-riding NYC/"Tri-state"/whatever poseurs sound like a complete pack of retards to anyone reading these comments who lives 100+ miles away from NY in any direction.

Are you fucking kidding me? Fortunately for ATP, there's an entire PLANET outside of NYC who would cut off their nuts to see a line-up like this in one place over one fairly convenient weekend.

New Yorkers are SO spoiled that it's embarrassing. You fools have no idea what it's like to grow up in a pile of shit and drag out own ass 1000s of miles away to see anything remotely cool.

I hope that you guys DO return your tickets, because I'm sure that there will be a lot of stoked people waiting to buy them up. And god knows that I don't want to be stuck standing next to you for a show like this.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2012 5:47 PM

*..drag your...

whatevszzzzzzzzz!

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2012 5:49 PM

amazing lineup.going to camber sands instead this year though :)

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2012 6:42 PM

a disappointing lineup, not a disastrous one. many not-bad acts on the bill, but maybe the Whigs just aren't an adequate headliner.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2012 8:50 PM

This’s a really awesome article. I would like to appreciate your work, Thanks for sharing!
