The Gaslight Anthem at Lollapalooza - 8/5/12 (via Daniel Johnson)
Gaslight Anthem

The Gaslight Anthem released their first major label album and fourth overall, Handwritten, late last month and have been touring profusely for it throughout the year. They've already hit NYC twice this year, with shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Webster Hall. Now they've got a ton of more international dates scheduled for late summer into fall, and they'll return to NYC on November 28 and 29 at Terminal 5. Tickets for both NYC shows go on sale Friday (8/10) at noon.

Handwritten has been receiving pretty mixed reactions. SPIN, Guardian and Pitchfork gave the album pretty mediocre to negative reviews, whereas the punk scene is loving it; Punknews and Altpress gave it near-perfect scores and Absolute Punk did give it a perfect score. It's not just the punks though, Stereogum awarded it 'album of the week' the same week that Passion Pit and Purity Ring's excellent albums were released. I think Handwritten is pretty great, and definitely the band's best since The '59 Sound. It doesn't quite reach the heights of that album, but opening track/lead single "45" is the most immediate single since "The '59 Sound," and if Handwritten is an example of what major label rock sounds like in 2012, I'm very okay with that. What do you think?

The Gaslight Anthem were just in Chicago for Lollapalooza over the weekend. They performed on Sunday (8/5), playing mostly off '59 Sound and Handwritten. If you haven't been keeping up with our Lollapalooza coverage, pics of day 1 are HERE and pics of day 2 are HERE. Pics of day 3 are coming soon.

You can check out a video of their entire Lollapalooza set, the setlist, and a list of all upcoming tour dates below.

This braindead band and Terminal 5 were made for each other. Bros and Jersey teens talking over the music and hi-fiving each other for no reason. Meanwhile this generic crap plays in the background and every song sounds the same, and sounds like a ripoff of everything that came before it.

I'm OK with it too.

Is Rise Against headlining those dates or is Gaslight? I'm also surprised at Rise Against popularity. I like them a lot, but having Rancid opening for them a few years back at Roseland seemed slightly off.

Um.........yeah. This punk gives this band a 0.

2:36 I'm sure you come from such an elite subculture that it makes you an expert to stereotype and judge people/places outside your neighborhood.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 2:44 PM

Or we could just go watch some pseudo Brooklynite douche hit a fucking spacebar at PS1 while 2:36 tries to roofie "mad chicks"

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 2:45 PM

Knowing that this music sucks ass is not an "elite subculture", its common fucking sense. Terminal 5, nuff said.

point being: if you really dislike a band/singer, why waste time reading the posting (or not reading it) and typing in the comments area? Does deamning others based on their geographical location or their taste make you feel like a better person? Not everyone is going to like the music you like, so let others enjoy and spend their money any which way they want

Andrew Sacher is generally a pretty good writer with good musical taste. Except here. In case anyone who reads this post thinks for a second about giving this rubbish a second listen, I'm here to tell them that this is unadulterated crap and do not venture into the hellhole that is Terminal 5 to find this out.

Love these guys, psyched they're moving up in the world. Playing Radio City was a huge mistake in 2010, just not a venue suited for them. Webster Hall show was so much fun and I'm sure these nights will be too.

Oh, and 1:36, whatever dude. You can feel free to keep listening to Grimes, Zola Jesus, whatever nerd is hitting the space bar this week, etc.

DOUCHEBAGS!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 3:18 PM

Am I crazy, or does this shit sounds like Bruce Springsteen?
Terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 3:46 PM

Bruce Springsteen sucks and so does this band

Posted by Sam | August 6, 2012 3:49 PM

I had to hear the new record at work. It straight up sounds like Daughtry.

Static-X > Gaslight Anthem

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 4:26 PM

Handwritten rules. This band deserves to be huge.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 5:09 PM

I preferred this band when they used to be named the Gin Blossoms.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 5:29 PM

Funny comments. I liked them better when they were Entourage.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 7:13 PM

How dare they play audible rock music with guitars and with no synths and no protool contortion. What the hell?

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2012 6:37 AM

Yeah, it does kind of sound like Daughtry. Never even realized it until you mentioned that.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2012 10:21 AM

"How dare they play audible rock music with guitars and with no synths and no protool contortion. What the hell?"

Yes, and how dare they not have some stupid schtick like peeeing in each others mouths (Black Lips), going topless (Friends) or bringing horses on stage with their dicks out (Of Montreal)?

Oh the ever-present hate from the no-talent never played an instrument section of BV. Gaslight Anthem is a great band that has been working their asses off for the last few years. Good for them. Handwritten is a fine album.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2012 2:46 PM

this band is awful

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2012 11:42 PM

They've worked very hard to mine every "rock band" cliche ever known to mankind. I must admit I'm impressed at their ability to ape all the right rock moves. That bass player is right out of central casting.
