Lollapalooza 2012 - Day 1
Lollapalooza 2012 - Day 1
Lollapalooza 2012 - Day 1

A bell tolls, a bass guitar moans, and Ozzy Osbourne sings. "What is this that stands before me?" the former archnemesis of John Cardinal O'Connor intones with chilling deliberation. Black Sabbath - three-quarters of them, anyway - are back to reprise the doom-ridden, Beelzebub-baiting classics from the '70s. Osbourne sounds in good voice initially, slicing through Tony Iommi's granite-hard guitar riffs and Geezer Butler's nuclear-strength bass. He even lays down some credible blues harp on "Wizard." But, as if to prove he isn't lip-synching, Osbourne struggles to nail some of the high notes in "War Pigs." No matter, Sabbath was never about sex appeal or perfection. They were dead-end working-class kids who had no use for the romanticism of the flower-power era, and instead peered into the abyss that awaits us all. The songs, which just happened to invent an entire genre of music, still sound magnificent, from "N.I.B." to "Iron Man." [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza, the mother of indie U.S. festivals, is happening this weekend at Grant Park in Chicago. Friday (8/3) kicked things off with such bands Black Sabbath, Afghan Whigs, Passion Pit, The War on Drugs, Tame Impala, Metric, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. If you're not in Chicago but would still like to have the Lollapalooza experience, just skip showering, turn off your A/C, crack open a beverage and watch the festival's livestream on YouTube.

More Lollapalooza Friday pics are below.

My kingdom for a photo editor! Was each person who bought a ticket to this festival promised that their picture would appear in this blog?

The only individual crowd shot that was necessary:

Totally Enormously stupid band name and costume, and concept playing music out of a BEATS by DRE LAPTOP!

The girl with the "SLUT" hat should get smacked. I bet she's intolerable to be around for more than 5 seconds, and thinks she's edgy.

I don't really get a sense of the crowd from these pictures. Can you please focus your coverage less on the bands and more on the crowd?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 2:21 PM

Sabbath do not belong anywhere near those other bands.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 2:24 PM

LULZ @ James Richards IV all into getting up close for the waifish quirky douchenozzle hipster trash bands but too pussyshit to go anywhere near the Sabbath stage. All the BS pics are far right and blurry. I call "PUSSYSHIT" on that!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 3:55 PM

In a sea of negative comments 1:08's joke was pretty cute

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 4:04 PM

I personally don't see what was so funny about that iPod comment but at least he wasn't ripping on the generous assortment of pictures (which I enjoyed).

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 5:01 PM

^agreed, though the iPod comment did make smile.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 5:19 PM

SUBJECT: The End Of The iPods

Dearest fans of The iPods:

As you are all aware, in spite of our mutual efforts to hold them together (at times with duct tape!), The iPods broke apart just days after the lapsing of their 1 year contract. I have spoken with each of the components, and they are all comfortable with the finality of the decision and look forward to their individual futures. By now, the initial grief likely has passed, and they have asked me to pass on to all of you their loyal fans to remember the great times that we all had together. I would personally like to ask that all the fans that were inspired by The iPods to go and start a band of their own. Remember, keep it diverse and adapt to the times. The platforms may change, but the songs remain the same.

Keep rocking

Hey -- I started the iPods thing about a month back and I see it is still popular on the site. I don't really post it often, but I do sometimes, and it is not "broken up." It is MY thing and I will decide when I stop it. For now, it seems like (most) people still like it, so they are still "together," if that is the terminology we are using. No fake press release changes that, unless I write it. It's late so that is all for now but I will write more tomorrow.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 8:27 AM

I actually started the iPods thing (not 4:45). When it got hijacked into the serial posting unfunny single person commenting faux-meme thing, I had no choice but to accept it. Who am I to regulate others' actions? So, 4:45 I recommend you do the same. Obviously there are lot of people that feel like it's time to let it die. Let it die already. Maybe create your own joke next time? Maybe create and not co-opt?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 8:55 AM

these people didn't deserve black sabbath!! what a waste playing in front of these douches... people dicking around with their phones during sabbath is a fucking outrage!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 10:09 AM

i'm old.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 10:51 AM

8:55 -- Yes, I know you originally made a reference to iPods but it was not the same thing. I would you say that you made a comment whereas I made it into a "joke." There is a difference. I respect that you want some credit for it -- fine, I am giving you credit for planting the original seed. But it is something different now, so I would appreciate you -- and anyone else -- not trying to act like I did not popularize it. If I recall correctly, only one person laughed when you originally posted it. Sometimes when I post it, 4-5 people laugh -- and those are just the people who take the time to post that they are laughing, there are probably others. I will reiterate that no one can 'break up' this thing I created. When people stop laughing, I will stop posting it. But, until then, I would prefer not to keep discussing the logistics and origin story and just focus on the comment itself. Also, I know a few people are not into the joke anymore. I respect that. That is why I only post it 1-2 times a day, when it seems particularly appropriate. I try to respect everyone on here and would appreciate if you all do the same. Thanks!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 11:41 AM

The Ipods comments are ridiculous as the annoying hummus guy. Stupid midwest kids

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 11:55 AM

11:55 - the difference being that there are MANY hummus guys and only one iPods guy (discounting the original)

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:09 PM

"(you) ... originally made a reference to iPods but it was not the same thing. I would you say that you made a comment whereas I made it into a "joke." There is a difference. "

I'd say that whoever is making the "iPods are broken up" statements now is doing the same thing, dipshit. Sounds like you need to stop being a Nancy boy and take your medicine like an adult.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:11 PM

THE iPODS ARE DEAD! LONG LIVE THE iPODS!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:12 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:26 PM

I am new to this conversation what is this iPods thing about is there a new model coming out

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:57 PM

I would be more interested in discussing the bands that are actually playing Lolla and not "the iPods" which I doubt are even a real band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 2:03 PM

1:11 and 1:12, this is 11:41 -- the person who inarguably popularized this joke. I know that you guys are just trying to get me riled up and I will not let you do that. But I am serious that I don't want people saying that MY creation is "broken up" or otherwise messing with it. I know I am contributing to the "noise" surrounding the joke, but I am sincere when I say that I would rather just focus on the joke -- as long as it is clearly making people laugh. So I would appreciate people not trying to muddle things up and clogging up the message boards. Like I said, I only post it when it makes sense, and the point is for people to enjoy it -- particularly people who have not seen it yet, not people like you who are on here all the time. As long as people are being amused, I don't see what the controversy is. If you have seen it before, move on. Also, from now on I am going to be posting it with my name, so people who DO spend a lot of time on these boards can know when it is a real reference/joke/whatever and not someone just trying to get attention or ruin it for other people. Now can we just focus on the music? I know I actually enjoy discussing substantive stuff on these boards so let's do that.

M

:-( You mean they broke UP!?!?

Well, at least the iPhones are here, and they really know how to speak to a crowd!

I am 12:35, and I would appreciate it if people would respect my wishes. I am CLEARLY 12:35, and while that time may have existed as a concept before it intersected with MY life, I AM CLEARLY 12:35 now. So, EVERYONE POSTING AT 12:35 from now on need to acknowledge me.
Thanks. I try to be respectful to all the other times, but this one is CLEARLY mine,

12:35 was in the iPods!
12:35 4-EVAH!
12:35 told the truth!
No 12:35, no justice!

Okay, people are obviously ignoring what I thought was a fair and thoughtful post about respecting both 1) this board and 2) the thing I have created. I am at work right now but will weigh in on this more thoroughly when I get home this evening. Should I post in this thread or a new one -- I want to lay some ground rules going forward that people will (hopefully) respect. Then hopefully we can get back to talking about music! Also, if anyone wants to seriously discuss this, my e-mail is MF1979@hotmail.com. You can reach me there, but please nothing just cluttering my inbox. Thanks. For the rest of the day I will not be posting so anyone who makes their version of the joke or comments is NOT me. Now, you people who don't have to work today, please go out and enjoy your day.

^ 2 separate posters have reported pain and suffer.ing from your continual disregard to their wishes through these posts. Do you really want to go keep rattling this cage? Is it really worth your employer finding out about this hobby of yours? As I recall, there is a peer reviewed board of conduct that attorneys are subject to, amirite? Do we want to keep going down this road?

I am retiring the joke. I feel like it has run its course. I have more to say, but am resisting doing so. I know that I had fun and so did lots of other people, but I am moving on. This whole experience has taught me a lot about "people." Thanks to the supporters and, everyone else, you need to relax and enjoy life.

Thank you 6:26. I am one of the posters that you made reference to. I just want this harassment to stop, that's all. I have no ill will toward anyone, but I just want to be able to sleep again and not have this anxiety. Thank you for respecting my wishes and not posting any more about the ipods and diversity and all.

Those early Mitchfork posts were some of the best satire I've ever seen on the internet.
