Origin at Saint Vitus
Origin

Technical death metal heavyweights Origin played Brooklyn's St. Vitus last night (8/9), supported by Malignancy, fresh off a European tour, with Pyrrhon and Twin Lords.

Two-piece Twin Lords, Tombs drummer Andrew Hernandez's new project, opened playing a short set with just drums and bass. In spite of their minimal instrumentation, Twin Lords delivered a rich, complex, and unclassifiable sound marked by spiraling bass riffs. Brooklyn's Pyrrhon took the stage after Twin Lords and slammed through their deeply unsettling but highly technical brand of death metal. They played a few new songs, including the recently demo-ed "Balkanized".

New York death metal fixtures Malignancy are currently borrowing Pyrrhon drummer Alex Cohen and performing without a bassist. It seemed that half of the none-too-small audience were friends of the band. The set turned into something of a home town bro-down, and the crowd was in good spirits by the time Origin came on.

Origin guitarist Paul Ryan played with such fury it was difficult to see his fingers as anything but a blur. However, singer Jason Keyser spent almost as much time talking in between and over songs as the band did playing. The crowd seemed a little put off by his arena-antics, but were ready to forgive after being assailed by John Longstreth's inhumanly fast drumming.

Origin will be in Montreal on August 11 for the beginning of their leg of the Kataklysm tour. Those tour dates and more pictures from Saint Vitus are below.

People that don't like metal music don't see the real beauty of this type of music. Beneath the loudness of it. It's really beautiful music.
