Metallica's headlining set on Saturday featured lots of the band's classic material ("Master of Puppets," "Ride the Lightning," "Creeping Death") paired with a fair amount of pyro and endless shout-outs to San Francisco. "We're very grateful to be playing in the backyard of the greatest city," said frontman James Hetfield. He also noted that a friend of his who lives a good distance from the park told him earlier that he could hear the band soundcheck all the way from his house. "So we're not only playing for you," said Hetfield. "We're playing for all of the Bay Area." [Rolling Stone]
The 2012 Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival continued on Saturday (8/11) in San Francisco after kicking off a day earlier (8/10). Saturday's portion of the festival gave us a headlining set by Metallica, who, unfortunately for Jonsi, Sigur Ros was playing their set at the same time on a different stage. Saturday also saw sets by The Kills, Explosions in the Sky, Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, and more.

Pictures of day 1 are HERE. More of day 2 are below.

HA HA HA HA METALLICA AND SIGUR ROS ON THE SAME BILL!

Would love to see Metallica fans sitting through Sigur Ros!

At what point in the show did Jonsi and Hetfield exchange vests?

This is the harmonic convergence of sausage and scarf. This is what the Maharishi spoke of, the joining of all things, the sure sign of the apocalypse.

I bet that men's room had quite the glory hole! I bet this is why Buckeye Shrimper and Lulzy have been so quiet lately.

Ahh nuts they played the same time Metallica and Sigur ros..that would have been worth the price of admission to watch Metallica fans sit through Sigur Ros.

hetfield been hanging at the acheron by the look of that vest

The Kills should not be allowed to play while it's light out. That band belongs in dark and dank clubs only

geez - who booked Sigur Ros at these festivals - in the daylight at Lolla and against Metallica???

so glad i got them all to myself (among others) in the park two weeks ago

Are James and Kirk wearing under armour(R)?

Outside Lands has become a top fest here in the states but they had better be careful because 65k people a day is too much. The overcrowding was painful. If they could drop that to 50k a day, even if they raise the ticket prices...it would be world's better.

We all love lots of stages (six!) and lots of bands (100+) but I'd guess that four stages, one dance tent and 70-80 artists would still pull in the crowds. Don't try to be everything to everyone.

Last suggestion would be to move it to mid or late September. That's when the Avenues and GGP actually get sun and even some warmth. Little thing called a San Francisco summer.

Metallica v Sigur is an only in SF happening because it's Metallica's home town. No other festival would pit them together. Few of the crowd came for Sigur while thousands came for Metallica. I'm surprised the sound bleed didn't destroy the SR set but the fog sure did help.

Sigur Ros was fucking amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | August 15, 2012 2:48 PM

Yeah, easily the best headliner lineup of the festival year. They did a great job. The top level acts were a homerun. I honestly think something for just about everyone.

Hippies, hipsters and Shitallica...
The recipe of success.

Posted by Anonymous | August 15, 2012 3:53 PM

Yeah 65k was a bit too crowded, however it still only took me 5 minutes to wait in line to order me a side order of hummus... Where as googa mooga took about 40 mins.

Hahaha I got to see Metallica fans waiting out the Modest Mouse set at Orion Music Fest. That was a treat in itself.
Most stood as still as could be down front. Some even having their heads positioned down.
As soon as MM were done you could hear the sighs of relief, "Aaaahh finally.."

Typical Metallica Fan = One Dimensional

I ended up conversing with Red Fang about how Orion should book hip hop acts next year, lol.

Those shots of the Kills are incredible. I can feel the passion just looking at the photos.

Thats true metal heads 90 percent of the time are pretty much one dimensional.

That vest on Hetfield just seems like a uniform for dress up time rather than his Armani.

What a fucked up lineup.

If I would make a lineup, it'd be the best fucking Gig you ever saw.

Get your information straight people. Outside lands has 5 stages. Sigur Ros headlined one and Metallica did the other one. You could see Metallicas pyrotechnics from the Sigur Ros stage show though.

looks like a great show.
