BrooklynVegan photo exhibit “480 Pixels” opened last night, Thursday (8/16) at 92YTribeca and we threw a party that went a little beyond your typical box wine opening, with Screaming Females, Hunters and Heliotropes playing. It was truly a memorable — and seriously rocking — evening.

This was my first time seeing Heliotropes and Hunters and really liked both. A confident rock band through and through, and with big riffs and close-style harmonies, Heliotropes dip a little into early ’90s Seattle but they own it. I’m not sure how much of the crowd knew them before their set, but everyone I talked to was really impressed. Catch Heliotropes again at Rippers in Rockaway Beach on September 2 and when they headline Glasslands on October 2 with Cloud Eater, Grandfather and Fan-Tan.

Hunters, meanwhile, are a little more in punk and post-punk territory with platinum pink haired singer Isabel Almeida a natural frontperson, wailing into the mike while tangling it’s cord around her and often writhing on the floor. You can’t take your eyes off her. Her personality matched well with the band’s in-your-face sonic assault, led by guitarist Derek Watson, that was short, sharp and danceable. And loud.

This all had the crowd primed for the evening’s main attraction who did not disappoint. A veteran of BV events, Marissa Paternoster (who also has art displayed as part of our show) is a double barrel threat of serious guitar shredding and a set of pipes that validate the band’s name. There was a bit of a pit going for Screaming Females which probably doesn’t happen often at the venue, given the evening began with an announcement to please put our cellphones on vibrate. If we hadn’t, Screaming Females’ sonic attack was shaking them for us. Screaming Females’ next NYC show is Riot Fest on September 8 at Williamsburg Park with the Descendents, Gogol Bordello, and more.

Big ups to BV’s Chris La Putt who put the whole thing together. If you weren’t able to go last night, ‘480 Pixels’ will be up at 92YTribeca through September 6. As good as the pictures on display look here on the site, it’s something else entirely to see them big in high resolution. Definitely stop by if you can. UPDATE: These are the summer hours:
