Smashing Pumpkins at iHeartRadio Theater in June (more by Theo Wargo)
Smashing Pumpkins

Back in June, The Smashing Pumpkins released Oceania, their first full length album since 2007 and first with the band's current lineup of Billy Corgan, Jeff Schroeder, Nicole Fiorentino, and Mike Byrne. Around that time they also played a few shows in support of it including the tiny iHeartRadio Theater show in NYC. Now they're set to take the album to much larger venues on 'The Oceania Tour,' where they'll be performing material from the "new album Oceania as well as their classic songs." The Canadian leg of the tour has already been announced, and the band have revealed the US cities (but not venues and dates) that they'll hit as well. A full list of venues and dates is to come, but meanwhile, we know that they'll be in NYC for a show at Brooklyn's new Barclays Center on Halloween (10/31). (We'll leave you to make holiday/name-appropriate jokes.) Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, August 31 at 10 AM, and Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets on Monday, August 27 through the Citi Private Pass website. VIP tickets will also be available at the Smashing Pumpkins website. A list of all dates and US cities (including Camden, NJ, where the Susquehanna Bank Center is located) is below.

In other news, after recently calling out Radiohead, Billy Corgan took to an interview with PhilStar to call out some of his old favorites, Soundgarden (and of course another mention of Pavement). Billy said:

There are those bands that are essentially coming back only to make money -- playing their old albums, and maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they're thinking there might be a future.

I am not in that business, obviously. I condemn anybody who's in that business but doesn't admit (he's) in that business. When Soundgarden came back and they just played their old songs, great. I was a fan of Soundgarden, but call it for what it is. They're just out there to have one more round at the till; same with Pavement and these other bands.

In related news, ex-Smashing Pumpkin James Iha will be going on his own tour this fall and coming to the NYC area on October 5 at Mercury Lounge (tickets) and October 6 at Maxwell's (tickets).

A list of all Smashing Pumpkins dates and a video of the band playing "The Celestials" at iHeartRadio Theater in June are below.

FACT - SOUNDGARDEN is a better band.

REALLY BILLY???? S.P. is now you and 3 nameless dudes - SUCK IT!'

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:00 AM

Q: Does condemnation from Billy Corgan carry actual legal, moral, religio-cultural weight? Should Soundgarden be worried? Should they go into hiding?

Posted by Brian | August 23, 2012 10:01 AM

What a sad, pathetic person. Get over yourself, nobody cares about your band, or you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:01 AM

Whoa a little ambitous?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:03 AM

Bigger question:

Do the promoters actually think Billy can fill the Barclays center?

He's been playing 2-3,000 capacity clubs the past few years, and it's usually full but not sold out.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:04 AM

Someone remind the idiot that Soundgarden has a new album coming out later this year. Kind of puts the kibosh on his routinely dumb comments. (Hey, maybe he's the meh/sausage/hummus moron that posts on here!)

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:07 AM

There was this funny story that Chris Cornell told RS back in the 90s, when both SG and SP were big. They were playing LLP and Kim and Chris got Billy so torqued off about his new age crystals and shit that he had to call up his therapist on the phone to calm him down. Kim and Chris laughed and laughed at that.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:08 AM

Sad what has become of the Smashing Pumpkins. Soundgarden on the other hand, were always interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:09 AM

Soundgarden = Cool.

Billy Corgan = Lame.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:11 AM

Soundgarden and Pavement are giving the people what they want. No harm in that. SP fans have to sit through all this new garbage while they wait impatiently for a song off of Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:11 AM

i hate both bands, but soudgarden clearly comes out on top.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:12 AM

quicksand had a better chance filling barclay's than smashing whatever the fughs

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:14 AM

Barclays Center? $5 tickets day of show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:14 AM

This place is going to be empty..stick to T5

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:15 AM

No way they are playing the arena. Has to be the theater below Barclays.

You know why? Because THEY FUCKING SUCK

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:15 AM

What the hell is he talking about? Soundgarden has new song in the Avengers movie and a new album out this fall. BC talking out of his ass yet again. Also, Cornell has been very busy creatively over the past few years, Cameron is an essential part of Pearl Jam now, and I am not quite sure what the other two guys are up to, but I'm sure they are busy enough. Not sure why he felt the need to call them out. Dumb.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:16 AM

I'm pretty sure Mlimus admitted cash was one of the main reasons they got back together. He also said it was a one time deal and I believe he'll stick to it. The SP are basically just a Corgan solo project now. He just uses the SP name because he knows no one will give a shit otherwise.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:18 AM

they were good at T5, wonder how overpriced this'll be

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:19 AM

what a dickhead

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:19 AM

I'm not sure if anyone actually likes what Billy does now, or if it's a giant PR scam.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:27 AM

In 1992
SP > SG > PJ

In 2012
SG > PJ > SP

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:28 AM

Soundgarden were always ahead of their time. Their new album will be rad.

Billy made 2 good albums. Sucked ever since. Amirite???

Posted by OG | August 23, 2012 10:29 AM

You know, I agree with all the comments about how Billy is an arrogant douche, but let's talk about these gripes that "SP is just Billy now." SP has ALWAYS been 95% Billy. Sure, James and Jimmy were great musicians who provided a tight supporting band, but SP has always been Billy's singular vision, and there's nothing different about that now. I would be happy to see this show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:31 AM

NEW SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM COMING?????

HELLS YEAH!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:33 AM

I wish Soundgarden AND Pavement would make new albums.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:34 AM

@10:29 first 5 SP albums were all great. Stuff since reunion...eh.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:38 AM

no way in hell are they filling barclays. or the theater at barclays. face divided by a million day of show.

Who's Billy Corgan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:59 AM

It has to be the 1/3 capacity setup they're using for John Legend. PLEASE tell me there aren't 16,000 people willing to pay to see this.

Yeah. Billy write material that sounds alot like Siamese Dream (Oceania) and you praise Chris Cornell for collaborating with Timbaland.

Have you heard that awful shit? Clearly, you're uninformed losers.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:17 AM

if there was a Soundgarden story on this site you would have 100+ comments on how much they suck but because Billy had something negative to say they're suddenly great

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:23 AM

11:17 they praise Soundgarden not Chris Cornell solo...big difference

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:26 AM

11:17 - everyone knows that Chris went through a few (literally) insane years and made an unlistenable record. That doesn't change the fact that (a) Soundgarden was a great band, and (b) Billy and you are douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:38 AM

again, I ask:

Who's Billy Corgan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:45 AM

Billy Corgan is a talentless scab!

Posted by JAMES IHA | August 23, 2012 11:45 AM

11:38-just wait until that new SG album comes out and lets see if you still think they're a great band

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:48 AM

No talent? Come on, you can not like the guy but to say he has no talent is a joke.

If you'd rather hear old SG, more power to you but many others will take old Pumpkins over SG any day of the week.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 11:56 AM

James Iha. lulz

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:03 PM

I respect Soundgarden's pursuit to continue making great music for the fans without any drama of this kind.

I do not respect anything Corgan says these days, since he's often inaccurate and extremely fake about whatever he's talking about.

Posted by Hank | August 23, 2012 12:06 PM

Billy, your band is not the Smashing Pumpkins and it's insulting to even call it that. SP and Soundgarden were my favorite bands growing up and only one of them is still any good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:07 PM

IS THERE A NEW SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM!?!?!?!?!?!

KILLER NEWS!!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:07 PM

Smashing Chickpeas and Hummusgarden should team up and put out an album.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:16 PM

Does anyone like the new Smashing Pumpkin?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:18 PM

oceania is pretty good, but nothing spectacular.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:25 PM

Oceania is god awful.

Posted by SP Fan | August 23, 2012 12:29 PM

Billy Corgan does not play for money. That's why his music is so bad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:30 PM

theres a HUGE difference between "stadium" and "arena", which is what the press release states

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:48 PM

saw corgan at untedpalace years ago. half the venue was empty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 12:51 PM

Say all you want about Billy Corgan but he didn't make a horrendous solo album... and no I am not talking about the one he did with Timbaland. At least he was TRYING to sound like Michael Jackson. You all should listen to the new Smashing Pumpkins record before you jump to ridiculous conclusions. PS Soundgarden said their new record would be out in time for 2011 (on the first episode of conan on TBS) It sounds awesome doesn't it? Oh wait. It doesn't because it doesn't exist.

Posted by Jay Sharp | August 23, 2012 12:54 PM

Whatever Jay... the sooner you accept that your teenage idol is a horrible self-obsessed human being, the better off you will be.

The Corgan solo album SUCKEDDDDD)))))

We've listened to the new SP album, and it sucks worse than anyone expected))))))

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:16 PM

Hi 11:17, 11:48, Jay Sharp and all other non-native English speakers. I said that soundgarden WAS a great band.... and that Billy IS a douche.

billy, it's called turtle wax...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:30 PM

1:15- but you were retarded enough to type %99. Good one

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:37 PM

You would have to be %100 retarded in the head to understand OCEANIA. Us normal folk can't comprehend the level of creativity Billy Corgan is on. If you weren't mentally retarded, you'd hear that OCEANIA isn't any better or different than Billy's last 5 crappy albums.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:44 PM

I liked Billy more when he admitted he sucked in guitar magazine and trolled around Eddie Van Halen for attention. Trolling around Soundgarden will not make his new/old music any better. Soundgarden is musician's music, no media drama included.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:47 PM

Billy's looking more down syndromey by the day... time for a wig bra?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:51 PM

nobody has given a shit about Soundgarden for over 15 years. There are at least some people who like Oceania

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:52 PM

1:52 is technically correct, but there are some people who like Todd Akin, too.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 1:56 PM

In retrospect, that one Zwan wasn't that bad.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:02 PM

Soundgarden broke up and went in different directions 15 years ago. Billy kept going without anyone giving a shit about him. Poor Billy...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:21 PM

Billy Corgan is a genius, unlike Kurt Cobain or Pearl Jam who no one cares about anymore.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:30 PM

I think we can all agree Billy Corgan was a bigger influence on culture than Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder!

Posted by SP FAN | August 23, 2012 2:31 PM

Corgan is an overrated guitarist. Any competent high school guitar player can play his solos. Was Billy ever as great as he thinks he is???

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:36 PM

Trying to discuss music with a Corganite is like trying to play Scrabble with an infant. Their brains aren't developed enough, so you're constantly afraid they're going to put foreign objects in their mouths.

""""Trying to discuss music with a Corganite is like trying to play Scrabble with an infant. Their brains aren't developed enough, so you're constantly afraid they're going to put foreign objects in their mouths.""""""

BEST. COMMENT. EVER. ON. BV.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:42 PM

Corgan thinks he can spew ignorant shite because he had a troubled childhood. SO DID EVERY GRUNGE SINGER, RETARD!

Posted by Rugs | August 23, 2012 2:44 PM

*Corganite*

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:46 PM

BILLY CORGAN IS A GENIUS COMPARED TO A JUNKIE LIKE KURT COBAIN.

COBAIN SUCKED.

CORGAN IS A GOD.

END OF THREAD.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:47 PM

that's not even a good troll
boring, sp fan

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:53 PM

At least Billy Corgan played everything. Kurt needed a hack band to play his simple simon songs. Billy is a remarkable musician that deserves to be heard when he has something to say!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:55 PM

Why do the mentally retarded get so defensive when a Smashing Pumkin post goes up?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:56 PM

HEY TROLL,

Pearl Jam makes new records and easily sells out arena tours. Nirvana would to, if Kurt was alive.

Get your facts straight before you join the ignorant club!

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 2:58 PM

"if Kurt was alive"

if he was still alive everyone would of turned their back on him for not being "relevant"

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:05 PM

Who is dumber, the guy with the ventriloquist dummy or the guy arguing with the ventriloquist dummy?

It's more a koan for the non-SP fans to ponder.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:07 PM

2:42- please don't agree with a comment you made yourself. its embarrassing

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:09 PM

"Pearl Jam makes new records"

you're right. records you can only buy at Target. Still want to defend them????

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:12 PM

Hi 3:09. I made the Scrabble comment (or 'Scraddle' for you Corganites) but I didn't agree with myself. You are proving my point.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:25 PM

Billy Corgan says he likes Nirvana, but Kurt Cobain's success was a fluke that anybody could have achieved. I think he's wrong. That said, Oceania is terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 3:34 PM

HA 3:09 thinks I wrote both comments, but I didn't.

Who's Billy Corgan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 7:20 PM

Billy Corgan's big head can be used as a solar reflector, thus helping to ease the warming of the planet. On that basis he's useful. Too bad his music sucks.

Pussy Riot > SP

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 9:18 PM

I don't recall Sp selling out arenas even at the time of melancholy. This booking is a recipe for disaster.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 9:25 PM

Ultramega OK was dope

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 9:26 PM

Last time Smashing Pumpkins played T5, they Sold out the day tickets went on sale. I don't understand why some many of u are unaware of their ability to sell tickets...

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 9:49 PM

Big difference between selling out T5 and Barclays. We are talking a difference of 13,000

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2012 10:02 PM

MICHELOB LIGHT presents:

Billy Gorgan and the Cash Grabs.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:55 AM

cash grab? you must have them confused with Pavement or Pulp. those are cash grabs

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 2:39 AM

anybody who confuses T5 with Barclay's clearly isn't Barclay's

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 2:57 AM

"don't recall Sp selling out arenas even at the time of melancholy. This booking is a recipe for disaster"

They played seven NY-area arena shows in a yr during the MCIS era.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 6:50 AM

Dear Billy,

It's been 18 FUCKING YEARS. Get over it.

Posted by Stephen Malkmus | August 24, 2012 6:56 AM

6:50 is correct, sort of ... including Albany and counting The Academy as an arena:

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY, USA on January 24, 1997
Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, NY, USA on November 2, 1996
Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, USA on September 18, 1996
Madison Square Garden, New York, NY, USA on September 17, 1996
The Academy, New York, NY, USA on January 13, 1996
The Academy, New York, NY, USA on January 12, 1996

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:13 AM

As the poster of 925, I humbly stand corrected.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 8:17 AM

I saw the Pumpkins at U ni ted P al ace on the Zeitgeist tour. The venue was half empty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:29 AM

Down on the Upside's dope.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:31 AM

I am 8:13 - I was sort of correct too. My search results excluded Hartford, New Haven, and Brenden Byrne (or whatever the fuck it was called at that point). So, they actually did play the number of true arena shows that 6:50 stated without the Palladium ones.

On a side note, who else misses the Palladium?

On a side side note, I saw my first domestic spying drone fly over Prospect Park yesterday. It was ... disturbing, to say the least.

That is all for now.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:41 AM

Louder than Love is pretty good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:43 AM

Billy couldn't fill UP because it is in Harlem.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 9:47 AM

9:41

I wasn't even counting New Haven in my comment.

http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?year=1996

The Pumpkins were huge in the mid-90's. For a few yrs they were probably the biggest band in the world, and also one of the best.

with that said, the new album is boring and Corgan hurts his legacy with every embarassing interview.

but no need for revisionist history. they could have played Stadiums 15 yrs ago.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 10:18 AM

^ Agreed. Oceania is hella boring and Billy is ruining the band name with every appearance he makes.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 10:32 AM

100% of people that use the word "hella" are douchebag transplant hipster fucks

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:04 AM

you must be deaf because the album is great. also don't agree with your own comment. pathetic

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:05 AM

I can't believe people care that much about this. Way to go Billy.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:30 AM

I guess Billy wins again in the polarizing artist of the year award.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 2:54 PM

wow... i'm a Pumpkins fan, and i didn't think the Oceania album was terrible, but the number of retard-devotee-SP-fan comments that pop up never cease to amaze me. Militant spokespeople hopping to defense anytime someone says "I don't like SP." It's embarrassing.
But I will say, they definitely sold out arenas back in the day. Very curious about what it'd be like now...

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:47 PM

Superunknown's dope

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 5:55 PM

Saw SP at Roseland with RHCP in the early 90's. SP were so boring that I wound up talking to a heroin addict instead. Much more interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:32 PM

I saw SP at Untd Pa lace. was dead empty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 9:01 AM

I was at that show and it was packed. I don't know what show you were at

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 12:26 PM

It was packed with Billy's inflated ego.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2012 1:48 PM

Posted by miniclip | August 28, 2012 1:46 AM

still mad about Range Life?? someone got a lil sand in their vagina

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2012 9:47 AM

Range Life is a better song than anything Billy ever wrote.

Posted by Anonymous | August 28, 2012 9:55 AM

Both The Smashing Pumpkins and Radio head are great bands. Some people say negative things about them but in the future I believe. We will regard them as some of the best bands of this current aura. Both Radio head and The Smashing Pumpkins are talented bands and people that say negative things about either of them. Do not truly recognize talent.
