The scene outside of the Empire State Building (via)
Our thoughts go out to the families of the people who were allegedly shot outside of the Empire State Building this morning:
The body of an alleged gunman is lying outside the entrance to the Empire State Building after a shooting broke out Friday morning, leaving at least two dead, New York City officials said.Mayor Bloomberg will be holding a press conference at 11AM EST to talk about the situation, which is developing as we speak. Stream it live here.A woman was also killed in the shooting, which occurred as people were lining up to gain entry to the busy tourist destination.
An elevator worker from inside the Empire State Building ran outside and began chasing the alleged shooter, CNN producer Rose Arce said. At some point police, who were apparently inside the building, were alerted and chased and the alleged shooter.
Arce talked to several international tourists who were standing around. "They were completely stunned by what happened and were screaming," Arce reports. -[CNN]
Sad day for New York.

work at uniqlo and gave us the day off.... unpaid
more importantly an increasingly note of this country's embarassing gun laws/control
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:11 AM
11:11- gun laws would have done exactly nothing to control this (assuming you are taking the stance that stricter gun control is the answer). The man was obviously mentally ill/disgruntled. Why do you think he would care if his gun was obtained legally if he had no problem shooting innocent people?
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:14 AM
What a horrible tragedy that left trail of injury, death and pain.
Without a doubt, the "logical" response of the gun nuts will be that if a civilian was carrying a piece they could've taken matters of defense in their own hands. It's sad that it seems most against gun control think MORE guns is the right answer. Hey, if we're all packing then we can protect ourselves, right? WRONG!
Wake up people, the right wings and gun advocates are selfish pricks! They don't want what is best for the people, they want what is best for themselves while totally ignoring the betterment of society. Such a scared negative outlook on life. This is NOT the answer!
Don't forget to vote on election day!

Please sit back and tell me how we'll never accomplish anything with the current 2-party system as you sit back and do NOTHNG to make things better for anyone. Always remember, you were born here by luck, not choice. Therefore you are more fortunate than millions of others in the world who live in poverty, tyranny and opression. This is your life, don't bitch - make things happen!

"work at uniqlo and gave us the day off.... unpaid"
They will make no money, so YOU will make no money. Pretty simple economics pal. If you're upset, start up your own business and call the shots. Until then, live with perspective that exsits beyond the realm of your own selfishness.

This shit happens all the time in Brooklyn and no one gives a fuck. 2 weeks ago there was a drive-by where 6 people were injured, including a 2 year old girl and a 14 year old boy. No one seemed to care then. Worse yet, the suspects are still at large. Is this because these people are white and in Manhattan that this is suddenly big news?
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 11:39 AM

bad choice of words
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:35 PM
11:39 How do you know they are white?
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:37 PM
Last time I checked there were no internationally acknowledged landmarks and tourist destinations in East New York. But, nice way to throw race baiting into the discussion where there was clearly no need for it 11:39.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:44 PM
White people scare me.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:52 PM
11:39- I, along with any reader of the major newpapers (online) read about that shooting, so I have no idea what you are talking about. It was covered. As far as the attention this shooting is getting, less people are shot at the Empire State Building throughout the year than in East New York. When something like this happens it is called a statistical outlier so it stands out more. Stop trying to be a race baiting douchebag.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:53 PM
11:18- You are painting a foolishly binary picture. There are more than just gun nuts and those completely against guns. I happen to support gun control, within reason. But, as I stated before, it would have done nothing to stop something like this. Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country and is a warzone.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 12:55 PM
I didn't even give 11:18 the credit of a rational post. I got a sentence into his tirade and discerned rather quickly that this was garden variety regurgitation of MoveOn.org talking points from a garden variety crazy eyes leftie zombie. They are all over the deep blue areas nowadays, and they are about as easy to spot as movie zombies. Best to just disregard it and move on to the adult participants in the discussion.

There were times at my last job I wanted to kick the shit out of my boss because he was an abusive ass hole. I wouldn't imagine taking it as far as shooting my boss in the head, but I can see where the shooter is coming from. I'm glad he got what he wanted, and I hope he got his boss to pray for his life before he took it away from him...
However, I don't condone him shooting innocent people, that's just fucking wack.

Guns are a symptom. The problem is the sickness in the American workplace; the after effects of Reaganonmics.
But, managing class, go on treating working people like shit. Nothing bad has ever happened with that. #HistoryOfRevolutions
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 1:21 PM
It's because Republican assholes (like the Walkmen) prevent any sort of legitimate gun control because somehow to them that impedes our "freedom."

1:21- a little simplistic, blaming it all on Reaganomics (and I think he was one of the worst presidents in our history). If anything, workers are treated better now in the workplace than in our past history, as horrifying as that may be.

Agree with 11:22. Never vote. In this country Democracy is a sham, voting supports the illusion that the people hold any power. It hurts more then helps.
Obviously, there are tons of ways you can help your community, help people and rebel against this shitty government and police force while not voting. 11:30 you seem quite angry, I hope you one say channel that into something more useful then voting and typing anonynous comments here.

The country would be MUCH safer without gun control. If that whacko in the movie theatre or this guy wanted to start shooting people who had guns, he would have been stopped. Police take time to arrive and cannot control everybody all the time.

BELOW IS A FEW COMMENTS MADE BY OUR FOUNDING FATHERS.
( so this ends all debate about gun control)
“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.”
- George Washington
“Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
- Benjamin Franklin
“The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
- Thomas Jefferson (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria)
“A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.” – Thomas Jefferson
“The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed.”
- Thomas Jefferson
“I enclose you a list of the killed, wounded, and captives of the enemy from the commencement of hostilities at Lexington in April, 1775, until November, 1777, since which there has been no event of any consequence … I think that upon the whole it has been about one half the number lost by them, in some instances more, but in others less. This difference is ascribed to our superiority in taking aim when we fire; every soldier in our army having been intimate with his gun from his infancy.”
- Thomas Jefferson in a letter to Giovanni Fabbroni, June 8, 1778
“Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self defense.”
- John Adams
“To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them.”
- George Mason
“I ask sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few politicians.”
- George Mason (father of the Bill of Rights and The Virginia Declaration of Rights)
“Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe.”
- Noah Webster
“The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops.”
- Noah Webster
“A government resting on the minority is an aristocracy, not a Republic, and could not be safe with a numerical and physical force against it, without a standing army, an enslaved press and a disarmed populace.”
- James Madison
“Americans have the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the people of other countries, whose leaders are afraid to trust them with arms.”
- James Madison
“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”
- James Madison
“The ultimate authority resides in the people alone.”
- James Madison
“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.”
- William Pitt
“To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them.”
- Richard Henry Lee
“A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves … and include all men capable of bearing arms.”
- Richard Henry Lee

2:36 PM- This statement always makes me laugh. Why do you think that people would have been able to take him out in a smoky theater, that was dark, with people running around in panic? There are other situations in which you might be right, but the Colorado shooting is not one of them.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 2:54 PM
2:44- I am a different poster, but your implication is maddening. I am as far from a Republican as one can get, but I strongly believe that our Constitution is what sets our country above others. And, as I am sure you know, there are something called Amendments build into its structure, meaning that that the drafters of the original document always left the possibility open for it to be changed and never saw it as gospel.

@2:41 thru 2:50:
Yeah, we should disregard the document that governs our society and *constrains* our government from metastasizing into totalitarianism or fascism. By all means it's much better to just give Glorious Leader full power over all things, then we will really be "progressive" and "enlightened".
One question - what do you do when someone dies in the meth house you live in? Do you bury them yourselves, or do you just leave the body where it is like the rats?

Bearing arms has absolutely no relation to your ability to preserve liberty in our modern world. You really think a handgun is going to repeal the Patriot Act? Or defend yourself against a drone strike?
All you're doing is essentially creating a micro-version of the Cold War; mutually assured destruction is the only outcome. More people will die, not less.
And innocent people will always die in shootings like these. Because 'innocent people' are the ones who don't buy guns, and never will. At least not in an effort to prevent an incident like this.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:38 PM
^ although 3:38s opinion is respectable, I disagree.
If somebody had a handgun in that movie theatre, maybe a couple would have been killed instead of twenty something.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:46 PM

I guarantee that if this guy or batman guy knew people had guns on them they wouldn't be so inclined to pull crazy shit like this. End of story.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:49 PM
How could you "the good law abiding person" have stopped this? If you had a gun, you'd carry it on your hip, ready to draw and fire at the first notice of trouble?
you're an idiot.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:54 PM
BTW all the defenses of the 2nd Amendment stem from a time when we had to physically protect our homes from angry natives and imperialistic Brits. Why would any private citizen in our nation Need a gun?
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 3:59 PM
Because not everyone in this country is as nice or honorable as you - people can, and do, invade others' homes and sometimes the people in those homes are robbed, raped and/or killed. The world is a violent place, I'd rather be prepared and never have to use a gun than be unprepared and wish I had one.
Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2012 4:09 PM
The gunman killed one person. A coworker. The rest were shot by police in "friendly fire."
If you want "law abiding citizens" to pack heat make sure they are expert marksman because the ones that are there to serve and protect can't seem to shoot straight.
