The National at All Points West 2009 (more by Chris La Putt)
The National

The National dudes are having a banner year. First the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival, then performing "The Rains of Castamere" on the second season of Game of Thrones and they are curating the UK edition of All Tomorrow's Parties. Now the band have band have announced (via Twitter) that they'll play before for President Barack Obama at a speech in Des Moines, IA on Saturday, September 1.

The band are longtime Obama supporters, having designed an election t-shirt back in 2008 and lending their song "Fake Empire" to his campaign.

The picture of The National above, by the way, is one of many great BrooklynVegan shots that are on display at our "480 Pixels" exhibit at 92YTribeca that is viewable through September 6. The gallery is open from 8 AM - 3 PM this week.

Posted by anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:12 AM

"How can they still love Obama? He didn't come through on any of his promises."

What is your point? Because Obama hasn't been able to come through on policies due to republican obstruction, that we should change our views 180 degrees and vote for spineless Richie Rich? Do you think before you type?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:20 AM

I waan't voting for him before but now I am

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:27 AM

IM VOTING FOR MITTS ROMMEYS

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:28 AM

What's the over/under on the amount of comments this one will get? 160? Anybody?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:29 AM

is 11:20 insinuating that barama bama isn't also rich? once you hit $10M, it may as well be $250M! detached from reality is a fairly bold line...cross it or you don't. as for changing your views 180degrees, well, i'd argue that romuloid is about as liberal as it gets on so many of the top issues (except woman's rights, of course). the difference? he's an ADULT. barama is a man CHILD. romuloid could actually do some good for this country, rather than hosting parties and flying off on big fancy vacations on my dime. yes MY DIME. but i'm a noo yawker and i hate everyone, everything. so what did you expect?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:36 AM

"Because Obama hasn't been able to come through on policies due to republican obstruction, that we should change our views 180 degrees and vote for spineless Richie Rich?"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

what a douche!

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:37 AM

obstruction? you're probably overly educated yet COMPLETELY UNINFORMED. for two years, obama ran the entire government, pulled EVERY string--white house and both houses of congress were HIS. he picked his battles--health care, cap and trade, stimulus, and wall street regulation (dodd frank). he chose those battles INSTEAD OF CREATING JOBS (you know, other than temporary government jobs created to inflate the numbers). so where does this so-called obstructionism come from exactly? oh, oh, did it come when, for three straight years, he got ZERO votes on his proposed budgets 'cause even democrats were like, "whoa, barry, chill out"?

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:44 AM

Obama is an anti-colonialist. Which is fine, we were founded on such. Except that he sees us as the colonialists, which is why he gives OUR MONEY to Brazil, Mexico, etc. to allow them to drill for oil in the Gulf and Atlantic while obstructing the Keystone Pipeline and many many domestic discovery projects, which would (not could, would) make us energy independent. There is ample evidence now, there is no argument. Obama is not with us (where "us" is the American citizenry).

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 11:47 AM

I lost a ton of respect for so many people back in 2008--the media, fellow Americans who'd actually attend a political circus and CRY when this guy spoke, Republicans who insisted on saying "Yea, but he's a nice guy," and even friends who said they just couldn't cast a vote for Palin. Palin is a moron, sure. But Joe Biden? The guy who suggested Iraq be split into three countries? The guy who after 30 years in government still fashions himself "Joe six pack"? The guy with vanity so run amok that he's got hair plugs, Jersey Shore spray-on tan, and chicklet teeth? The guy whose every gaffe is so cringe worthy that he should be escorted out of whatever room he's in and never heard from again? THAT GUY? But no, no, Obama is such a gifted orator, a brilliant mind, a "nice guy," that you could overlook his entire unearthed personal history and rely on two bios he wrote that the media accepted as his "personal narrative"?

Having the presidency along with a super majority in both houses of congress is kind of akin to pitching a perfect game. The opponent does not even get on base, the other team clearly wins in all categories, and there are only a handful of times that such has actually occurred in history. Obama had such from 2009-2011.

To blame Obama's lack of efficacy on "obstructionist Republicans" is not just ignorant but rather telling of the brain dead followers that inhabit the modern Democratic party.

LULZ @ the enlightened Dems! Lookit this specimen ....

"A Republican National Convention protestor was arrested while he allegedly carried a machete strapped to his leg, according to deputies.

According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's officials, Jason T. Wilson, of Tallahassee, was arrested as he walked in the RNC Event Zone carrying a "full size" machete.

When deputies approached Wilson, they said he continued to walk away despite orders to stop.

"When deputies caught up to Wilson, he advised he did not have to stop and that he was allowed to carry whatever he wanted," HCSO spokesperson Larry McKinnon said.

When deputies attempted to physically stop him, Wilson allegedly began resisting arrest and was physically restrained.

Wilson was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on charges of prohibited items in event zone and resisting arrest with violence."

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 12:11 PM

Wow. Democrats carrying machetes. Fucking crazy people.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 12:24 PM

Crazy, but no more crazy than Republicans defending their "right" to own automatic assault weapons.

Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2012 12:29 PM

Sorry dude, but walking around in the streets with a machete strapped to your leg is fucking crazy. If you don't see that, you are crazy too.

Posted by Old Bro | August 27, 2012 1:11 PM

"killing children in Afghanistan is cool nowadays"

Funny, I thought that we were just drowning kittens and smothering puppies. I'm sure that President Obama had that in mind when he surged 30,000 of our troops into "where we should have been all along", supplementing them with a massive drone army?
