Washed Out

As expected, the line to get into last nights House of Vans show (on 8/2) snaked blocks down Kent, at least to N 12th. The good news: everyone who stuck it out eventually got in. I saw that line and immediately thought, "Oh HELL, no" ...but good job you guys! I'm impressed. What a testament to your perseverance and commitment. Don't ever let anyone tell you you're apathetic.

I'm supposed to express my feelings about the show -- and don't worry, I'm going to -- but like, who really cares about my opinion on Lemonade, Chairlift and Washed Out? I don't even play any instruments. If you care so much to read this review, you should have gone to the damn show and formed your own opinions 'cause it was free and full of beautiful people so its not like it wouldn't have been a good time. Therefore I will keep my musing away from subjective assertions about the quality of the music and focus instead on other, even more inane points.

Lemonade, House of Vans 8/02/2012
Lemonade

Lemonade opened and OMFG how cute are those boys?! No seriously, their music was great and dancey but lead vocalist Callan Clendenin kept looking around and smiling like he was so happy to be there and smiles are contagious, people. I want to hang out with him all the time so when something bad happens he can smile at me. Get splashed with city bile by a bus on 14th St? Smile at me, Callan! Your dog ran away and you got fired? Don't worry, Lemonade is right around the corner, smiling at you. If only! In short, this is feel good music. It's summertime, y'all. If you missed them they're playing at PS1 with Jamie xx on Saturday (8/4) afternoon and then DJing Glasslands later that night.

Chairlift, House of Vans 8/02/2012
Chairlift

Next was Chairlift. Now, I'm not going to talk about the vocalist's sweet, foreign sounding wails. I'm not going to talk about how much she sounds like a less creative version of Lykke Li or Niki and the Dove and how you probably shouldn't waste your time unless you're one of those people who voluntarily chooses vanilla ice cream over coffee with Heath bar. Sometimes I want to listen to boring imitations of more innovative music, I guess. Most importantly, check out the chick's hair. You guys, I thought I had seen every possible version of ombré. I thought we Brooklyn women had taken the ombré trend and squeezed every last drop out of it -- everyone clamoring for their own original configuration, desperately convincing our hairdresser friends to come over and help, only to find us passed out on the floor of our bathrooms, hugging a bottle of Jameson with empty bleach and Manic Panic jars strewn about. It's hair, and it's serious. But Chairlift did it. I know I haven't seen every person in the world but I think she did it. And it's beautiful.

Chairlift are in Chicago this weekend, playing Lollapalooza Saturday (8/4) and an aftershow on Sunday (8/5) at Empty Bottle, then touring all over the place before opening for The xx at their two shows in the Bronx in October.

Washed Out, House of Vans 8/02/2012
Washed Out

Finally, Washed Out took the stage. Now, I'm not going to pretend to understand what happens when they play live shows. There is a lot of knob turning. I was anxious to find out how they make that lil 'bug-ee' noise on "Before" and I still don't know. All I know is it sounds a hell of a lot like "Dougie," as in "teach me how to" and can someone please mash those songs together for me?

I know this is a world of subjectivity and everyone is allowed their own opinions and whatnot, but if anything in the past six months was ever an indisputable fact, it's that Washed Out's last EP, Life of Leisure, is fucking amazing. Within and Without is pretty damn good too. If you don't agree, put away your obviously inferior feelings on the genre, get high and go swimming. Make out with someone soft. Pet a cat. Ride your bike to the beach. Sit on a stoop and drink a bottle of wine. By yourself. Do all of these things while listening to Washed Out and tell me that it isn't the most perfect soundtrack to your everyday life.

Washed Out are also in Chicago this weekend for Lollapalooza (tonight) and an aftershow(Sat 8/4 House of Blues) and will then hit the road with The Shins. Washed and and Chairlift dates are listed below, along with more pictures from House of Vans.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 4:44 PM

I sincerely hope you don't pay your writers, BV.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 4:44 PM

Good job Courtney!!

Worst review in a long while here and that is saying A LOT. Dud, i am sure you thought you were clever writing this and i bet the even dumber friends you happen to troll with told you it was great. Believe me kid, it's not.

Trying way too hard to be clever or interesting.

is there a beer jail at these shows now? there honestly should have been all along...

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 4:55 PM

Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 5:16 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 5:21 PM

Thats 40 seconds of my life I won't get back again. "check out the chick's hair. " what a douche. No wonder its been months since I bothered to look at this site, its drek. Can't there be ONE good music site?

Posted by nygrump | August 3, 2012 5:25 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 5:33 PM

Bless this ditzy bitch

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 5:34 PM

the only thing more empty than this review is the music being described. who gives a shit? stupid fresh faced kids who want to work in fashion.

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 5:58 PM

i think the reviewer is a UCB comedy writer

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 6:01 PM

5:33 - The pic is so small, how can you tell?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 6:04 PM

remember how vice magazine writes reviews like this and has for 20 years

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 6:45 PM

This a parody of a hepsters review, right?

Posted by Anonymous | August 3, 2012 7:00 PM

What an idiotic writer, even for BV's very low standards.

Posted by ME | August 3, 2012 8:04 PM

now i'm not gonna say...im a good writer.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 1:00 AM

so "indie rock" = "upper middle class white kid karaoke" now, is that about right?

Posted by hrk | August 4, 2012 3:37 AM

this is the worst review i have ever read and i read a ton of fucking shit

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 4:43 AM

also, washed out can't play a live show to save their lives. their recordings are okay, a little on the boring side. great if you're o shrooms or something.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 4:44 AM

it's cool, Courtney, you'll grow out of this phase

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 5:49 AM

The commenters aren't kidding. Holy shit is this an awful post.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 9:17 AM

Great photos. I'm guessing she's a photographer and not a writer...

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 12:43 PM

The day the music died.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 1:12 PM

was this written by a 12 year old? that was painful

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2012 1:29 PM

I appreciate her honesty.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2012 1:32 AM

I never comment but this review is absolutely terrible. This is the out-of-towner, just got to NYC but is already over it drivel that young people drool over.

And Mr. Brooklyn Vegan, yours is a blog I love and respect- perhaps you should find a music reviewer who doesn't start a music review with the thesis that writing about a music show is pointless. I, for one, was interested in reading the review and was then subjected to this banal livejournal entry about the singer from Chairlift's hair.

I'd be happy to cover the Titus Andronicus show coming up at House of Vans. Perhaps Courtney and I can do a double review where I talk about the music and Courtney can judge Patrick Stickle's threads.

Posted by TLF | August 5, 2012 4:51 PM

Courtney my love, a lot of people won't agree with this, but I think you're terrible.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2012 10:06 AM

On the topic of "reviewers," Courtney Dudley shouldn't be allowed to write another word. This is just awful.

On the topic of concert photography, this is a very lackluster attempt.

A nice camera and fast lens can't make up for the lack of inspired subject matter. Most of these shots are also painfully overexposed. This isn't how the show looked....

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2012 4:13 PM

i LOVE the new lemonade record. i still think 50% of washed outs songs sound like preset music from a karaoke machiene.

Posted by Anonymous | August 29, 2012 12:48 AM

storm has knocked out tonight's webcast. hope to have it up & running before the end of the night.

I will accept however much Washed Out you will give me, and not an ounce more. But for however much you give me--for that, yes, for that will I be grateful.

Posted by Anonymous | October 4, 2012 7:26 AM
