Jay Z Beyonce Obama

We already posted lots of posts today. Here's some more, and some reminders too...

Jay-Z & Beyonce raised a cool $4M for Barack Obama at their benefit last night ("Beyonce could not be a better role model for my girls," Obama said,). Go on and brush your shoulders off, Jigga.

If you bought a ticket to that fundraiser, may we interest you in a live entertainment company?

Meanwhile, the President was on The Late Show with David Letterman last night, chatting about the Mitt Romney "47%" video and other things. Watch it below.

In other money news, Amanda Palmer is now going to pay those previously-volunteer musicians and her new LP debuted at #10 on Billboard.

If you were wondering the #1 album is, it's Dave Matthews Band's Away from the World which beat out Bob Dylan. The xx's Coexist came in at #5, not too bad!

Check out what David Byrne & St. Vincent played last night in Chicago.

Look at pictures from our Jon Spencer Blues Explosion record release party that was last night.

Hope to see you at our Rafiq Batia record release party that Anti-Pop Consortium is also playing.

Check out an excellent profile piece on the legendary Neil Young that appeared in the NY Times Magazine.

Sinead O'Connor wrote to Russian president Vladmir Putin, demanding Pussy Riot's release. Is that helping or hurting?

Deftones are back with "Leathers", the new song from their upcoming Koi No Yokan due on 11/13. Check out that song below in a video stream and/or down load your copy at their site.

more stuff below...

Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation, Party Down) offered an in-depth deconstruction to the lyrics of Vanilla Ice's 1990 hit "Ice Ice Baby" last night on Conan. You can watch it below.

There's a new dwarf-filled trailer for The Hobbit which you can watch below.

The RZA made a kung-fu movie and will be touring in support of it.

Jack Black is going to talk to Peter Travers at 92YTribeca.

Nickelodeon's Yo Gabba Gabba!, have tour dates in their future, have started a kids clothing line and the commercial/music video is full of cool dads like Biz Markie, Wayne Coyne, and Dave Grohl. You can watch it below.

Wilco made a video for "Sunloathe" and you can watch it below.

ATP NY posted its schedule for this weekend's big fest. So did the DUMBO Arts Festival for that matter.

Matador enthusiasts take note: Mercury Prize nominees Alt-J have a new video for "Something Good" which may be be up your alley. Watch it below...

Our president had dinner with this guy with the expressed purpose of eliciting money from his friends. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but that's surreal as hell.

Before making it big, Jay-Z was a crack dealer in Brooklyn at the age of 13. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, he called drug dealers in Brooklyn his “role models” growing up.

He also has a history of violence. When he was 12, he shot his 16-year-old brother and he stabbed a record producer in December 1999. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation for the assault. Jay was even shot three times while growing up.

Democrats and Republicans will pander to anyone for money. Just follow the money trail, Obama stinks to the high heavens as much as Romney does. The only difference between Obama and Romney is that Romney got caught.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 6:55 AM

reminds me of marlo stanfield (the wire) when he drifts towards "legitimacy," given all us riches, and finds himself hobbnobbing at a political fundraiser. there he has something akin to a ghetto panic attack, flees the scene, and knocks out the first drug dealer he sees, and takes control of his corner. how long before jay-z drops the caviar and tuxedo, and picks up the frito lays and 9 double-m? contrived, sure. gut reactions often are.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 8:53 AM

7:24, when I first saw that pic and didn't look closely I thought that was a white woman with them - a guy I used to work with complained that she kept doing things to make herself look more white

She's Jay's high yellow princess

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 9:43 AM

Beyonce lookin' mad hefty in that photo.

Her parents were all "Hey, let's name her fiance, but with a muthafukin 'B'!"

Am I right??

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:03 AM

I personally don't have any skin in the above "debate", but did you really just employ the "I know you are, but what am I" insult? How old are you? C'mon, son.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:09 AM

Yes, I'm sure everyone here knows that the Weekly Standard is a legitimate, wholly unbiased news source.

Perhaps next you can link us to the washington times or an alex jones article? You sir, are an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:13 AM

Beyonce seems to have that same skin condition Michael Jackson had.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:20 AM

^Beyonce is about 4,000,000 times better looking than any girl you'll ever hook up with, though. So I guess the joke's on you.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:27 AM

Yes, lets bring back Michael Jackson jokes.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:28 AM

11:27 is very defensive of Beyonce on the internet.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 11:34 AM

11:13 so what do you consider legitimate news reporting? Because if you turn on CNN, MSNBC, check WaPo or Huffington all you're going to see is a ton of BS being spewed about the Romney video. Forgive the weekly standard for doing actual investigative journalism about the state of the country and not just blindly supporting the big O.

11:58 - don't even waste the energy on this waste of sperm. This same assclown no doubt quotes Mother Jones and Huff Post as "legitimate" news sources - meaning any source that does not align with his skewed point of view is obviously biased. No matter, we'll still walk away with the lot in November regardless of these zombies. This year is so eerily similar to 1980 on so many levels it's not even funny, and we ALL know how that turned out.

Ahhh, nothing compliments a BV comment thread better than college-freshman-reddit politics!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 12:19 PM

I agree, nothing like a BV comments thread with retard arbiters of knowledge dismissing others' opinions. Kind of reminds me of my Downs Syndrome cousin closing her eyes and believing that everyone has disappeared. Keep up that keen insight 12:19, can't wait to hear what you come up with next!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 12:26 PM

12:10, not for nothing, but i'd venture to guess that about 90 percent of people who post here were definitely not born in 1980. You are clearly old, very angry and irrelevant. Why are you posting here anyways? Moving on...

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 12:26 PM

Aw, you are adorable, little bunny! Not angry at all, and I think you don't read this site very often if you think that 90% align with any single description be it age, viewpoint, musical taste, or local. But you keep on clinging to your hope and change, you adorable little bunny. You are about to see what a good old fashion ass whooping looks like. It is a thing of beauty when it happens. Nothing but smiles here, child.

You're welcome.

^Being that you're clearly and old man reading a blog which primarily covers indie rock, you're kind of like the internet equivalent of the old, creepy guy who hangs out at the party that people steer clear of.

Just to humor me, though: Perhaps you can recall the eisenhower v truman election for us? Can you please provide a vivid description of the atmosphere surrounding that election?

OBAMA THE LIAR!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 1:05 PM

obama finally gets vetted. sure this'll get poo-pooed by the bearded, unwashed masses, but it's here if you'd open your mind to it! haha.

and geez, beyonce's hot as hell--skin bleached or not. gorgeous body, adorable smile. no comment on her husband. couldnt care less.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 1:16 PM

rightwing, leftwing, moderate--to the extent they still exist in obama's polarizing world (and bush before him)--if you acquaint yourself with actual facts (that narrow road somewhere between msnbc and fox), you'd know that obama's four years have been an unmitigated disaster. period. fact that he's had the majority of news organizations running offense for him all along makes it so his disasters have largely gone unreported. forget the economic destruction and just focus solely on the fact that the u.s. suffered a terrorist attack on the 11th anniversary of sept. 11. it wasn't some wayward tourist from the midwest who got caught up in the wrong place in libya. it was a u.s. ambassador--and three others--with a direct line and voice of the white house. obama and his enablers chose to keep this out of the news for how long? the media choosing to attack romney--WHO'S NOT THE PRESIDENT--for some supposed gaffe that really has little relevance/significance. anyone who could say they still support this guy is completely out of their minds. even harper's magazine -- one of the most liberal of liberal -- ran an essay about how horrible their hero turned out to be. of course, they'll still vote for him because, in the final analysis, they're still just lost children looking for a beanstalk or some other nonexistent nonsense.

Cool story, bro.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 2:06 PM

actually, if you read very very closely, it's more of an indictment about media than politics. fyi: no clue what you mean by "reddit-politics." thanks and have a nice day.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 2:11 PM

^ Yeah, nobody has read that, nor will they. That's kind of the point, you're wasting your time old guy. Take your crusade elsewhere, nobody cares.

HAHAH. i love kids. i may actually have one some day.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 2:23 PM

No clue what I mean by "reddit-politics"?

I've give you a hint:

High on passion and self-righteousness, low on understanding, nuance, context, punctuation and indentation.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 2:23 PM

oh, sweetie, we call that "sanctimony."

not enough context for you? nuance? HAHAH. you kids are hilarious. ok, i'm gonna take a nap now. bye.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 2:28 PM

lol "nap"

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:00 PM

1:36 nailed it.

For the kiddies screaming reddit politics - how much do you actually know about the dude in the white house? My guess is very little. He's achieving exactly what he wanted - redistribution, something he obviously believes in, and a weakening of our stature in the world. Forget what the world thinks of us - he wants them to see us as weak, which is how we'll eventually fall.

And who enabled this? The media that continues to attack Romney instead of presenting us with critique of the state of this country right now.

If you think the last few weeks of violence are because of a video on the internet (something most of the people in the middle east don't even have access to) then you're out of your mind. That's a convenient excuse that the White House is using so they can ignore the problem.

Lets put it this way - why is Obama continuing to go on Leno, have expensive dinners, and smile like everything is OK, when Americans are in serious jeopardy world wide? Isn't his job as the president to protect this country?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:14 PM

Literally every single time there is a post on this site that says "________" nailed it. It is blatantly obvious that it's a commenter agreeing with their own previous comment. It's sad, and lacks imagination.

In short:, go away, creepy old guy. Nobody cares about your politics here.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:21 PM

3:14, no I'm sticking with "reddit-politics."

You sound like someone who just read the first article they've ever read, and now they want to Tell Everyone How It Is, But They're Afraid Of The Truth(tm)

What you're saying makes no sense.

Why don't you apply 10 god damned seconds of critical thought to things before you go jacking off on the internet?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:24 PM

3:21 definitely did not nail it

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:25 PM

3:24 tell me why to vote for Obama based on his achievements over the last four years.

In short, why is it a good time to be an American?

Ready....GO

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:27 PM

BTW I'm the "nailed it" guy and that was my first comment on this post. I'm definitely not commenting on my own comments.

And I'm not old, nor am I young. Lets just say I'm at a nice, in between age.

So where's the stereotype? I guess I didn't drink any of the cool aid that my peers drank four years ago. Thank God.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:30 PM

Why would I waste a logical, numbers-based argument on someone who think's Obama is trying to destroy America in the name of Chicago Marxist Islam?

I don't give a fuck about Obama. You sound like an idiot who has a gut reaction against Obama and then trolls through Drudge Report looking for "proof" that your fee-fees are important.

Take that shit to Fox Nation, where you guys can get rage-boners at buzz words like "SOCIALISM!!!!!!!!1111"

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:31 PM

"cool aide"? Really? That's so cliche it's not even reading-off-a-notecard cliche, it's you-might-actually-be-a-bot cliche.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:33 PM

3:31 if you don't give a fuck about Obama, what do you give a fuck about? "FREE THINKING"? That's a buzz word. "FACT CHECKING?" Buzz word too. There is no way you can sit here, as a reasonable person, and say that we're better off now than we were four years ago. You're using smoke and mirrors to distract from my question. That's problem number one with the reasoning going through many people's minds this election. Instead of looking at things simply and clearly, they're playing mind tricks and looking at meaningless details.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:34 PM

Cliches and cliches for a reason my friend.

If writing your support for Obama on your hand and posting a picture of it on the internet isn't cult-like, then I'm not sure what is.

THen again you could be Chris Matthews and just feel tingles up your leg.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:36 PM

"Fact Checking" is a buzz-word?

Is "Logic" a buzz word, too?

Sorry, no "smoke and mirrors" (talk about buzzwords) buddy.

You need to actually look at (QUANTITATIVE, MEASURABLE) things that are different from four years ago, and for each one, analyze what has caused it to change.

More importantly, you need to do this not on Brooklyn Vegan.

None of us owe you an explanation of the modern global economy, or American politics.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:38 PM

You know what's "cult-like"?

How fucking deranged and absurd right wingers get about Obama.

You are literally preparing for 1000 years of darkness, the zombie apocolypse, race wars, and planet of the apes.

Because what, exactly? Obama's a not-very-effective slightly-left-of-center politician?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:41 PM

If you're going to argue with me, you owe me an explanation.

Frankly, if you look at measurable things, like the number of innocent Americans people killed outside the US, the number is on the rise. Oh yeah, the deficit? That's higher than ever before. Taxes? About to explode, once ObamaCare kicks in.

So what's so great about Obama's term? Oh yeah, we're all united now. And the respect us so much around the world. And he's created so many jobs with his stimulus.

Thanx Obama ;-P

3:38 rules. This passage in particular:

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:43 PM

If I wanted to argue with idiots, I'd be trolling the fuck out of Fox Nation.

But arguing with people who think "THE LORD BABY JESUS IS MAD CUZ OF CHICAGO ALINSKI MICHELLE OBAMA'S VEGETABLE GARDEN!!!!!!11111 MARXISM!!!!!111" is a successful argument ISN'T my idea of fun.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:43 PM

I'm gonna briefly engage with you one last time just to point out how ludicrous you're assertion that "the number of Americans killed abroad" is HIGHER now than four years ago, when we were still in two fucking wars.

Unless you think soldiers are asking for it, which I guess is an arguable point, but not one I think you'd make...

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:46 PM

3:43 - Where do you get your news?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2012 3:46 PM

Soldiers, while truly great people for sacrificing themselves for a "greater good" (definitely debatable, but not right now) are not "innocent" in the conventional sense that their hands aren't clean.

But an ambassador is definitely innocent. The guy's only crime was wanting peace.

Thanks Glen Beck for your insight ramblings.

In 2001, President George W. Bush inherited a surplus, with projections by the Congressional Budget Office for ever-increasing surpluses, assuming continuation of the good economy and President Bill Clinton’s policies. But every year starting in 2002, the budget fell into deficit.
In January 2009, just before President Obama took office, the budget office projected a $1.2 trillion deficit for 2009 and deficits in subsequent years, based on continuing Mr. Bush’s policies and the effects of recession. Mr. Obama’s policies in 2009 and 2010, including the stimulus package, added to the deficits in those years but are largely temporary.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/opinion/sunday/24sun4.html?_r=0

With President Obama and Republican leaders calling for cutting the budget by trillions over the next 10 years, it is worth asking how we got here -- from healthy surpluses at the end of the Clinton era, and the promise of future surpluses, to nine straight years of deficits, including the $1.3 trillion shortfall in 2010. The answer is largely the Bush-era tax cuts, war spending in Iraq and Afghanistan, and recessions.

Media Matters ... yeah, that's a legitimate news organization. Next time you want to make an argument try being intellectually honest and cite sources not financed by and acting as political action wing for convicted Felon George Soros . It is well documented that (a) the "Clinton surplus" was an Enron-like accounting trick (do your research, boy), (b) the "job growth" that this asshole is claiming does not account for the millions that have stopped looking for work altogether, and (c) the reprehensible connection between the unethical current DOJ and Media Matters (also well documented). Too many links in my post that got kicked back from BV - do a Google and learn.

You showed your hand, you fool - your arguments are specious, your beliefs are skewed, and your age and life experience limit your ability to intellectually engage in an honest and open manner necessary for true dialog. You are a hack, so take your own advice and STFU and go away.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:28 AM

Genuinely curious:

What is it that you hope to accomplish here by turning everything into a political discussion?

Why do you choose this site, a music blog, of all places to bait/antagonize people into a political argument? Why not go to huffington post or something?

Do you truly think that what anyone posts here, whether the slant is liberal or conservative, is going to convince ANYONE that their point of view is wrong?

I just don't understand the political cheerleading, what enjoyment do you honestly get from this? Because where I stand, it seems about as productive as banging your head against a wall.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:37 AM

I should also add that I say all of this as someone who identifies as a libertarian. I would find common ground with you on a decent amount of issues, i'm sure. But at the same time I just don't see the point in the constant obnoxious and unnecessary arguments.

Feel free to comment back with some troll response, but i'm honestly just curious as to why you do what you do.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:40 AM

9:37/9:40 - the President is the point of the thread. Sorry you missed logic class in school. Thanks for playing along.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:54 AM

Fact: no Libertarian would cite Media Matters for anything.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:55 AM

9:55. I am not the same person as the one you've been arguing with in the entire thread, sorry to disappoint. But thanks for confirming that you'd simply come up with a lame troll response rather than simply explaining why you spend so much time on a site frequented by people you seem to hate so much and whose views are so wildly disparate from yours.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:58 AM

Ha ha ha 9:40 thinks that he's talking to one person.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:58 AM

Yeah, I don't think that 9:58 understands how the internet works.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 9:59 AM

Good talk.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2012 10:01 AM

Maybe a better question is why you (9:58, et al) get such a boner over the guys having a political discussion in an election year. Seems to me that you've got the disconnect between your expectations of how people should act and the reality of how they do. Maybe you need to find another outlet. Have you tried tennis perhaps?
