Amanda Palmer @ Webster Hall (Instagram by Dese'Rae L. Stage)
Amanda Palmer

You can read the whole thing at her site, but here's a NYC-show related excerpt:

there were cities like new york where jherek - and everyone in the band - really wanted to make sure we had a 100% tried-and-true string corps. he didn't want to bank on possibly risky volunteers that night. chad raines, my guitarist, who's also in charge of wrangling the horns, agreed on that front as well. so we called our more professional horns and strings friends in new york, and we freed up the budget to pay them. we're doing that in some cities, and in some cities it's a total grab-bag of strangers on stage.

it's very important to me that we clarify that - not everything you see on stage is black and white, and those specific musicians in new york (and in some other cities) who got paid shouldn't be put in the same category as the volunteers. WE called THEM personally because we had lots of experience with them and knew what we were gonna get.

so you know (and because a photo of them has been circulating), in NYC, they were: sam kulik (who i know from our co-touring days with nervous cabaret), matt nelson (who's also in tUnE-yArDs), kenny warren, phil rodriguez, and "moist" paula henderson (aka Secretary). as many people saw, they ripped it UP on the webcast. sam and paula also showed up to play our kickstarter celebration (and were paid in money...AND beer).

in new york and in DC, three of the eight or nine horn and string players were actually from our opening bands: kelly and alec from the band Ronald Reagan hopped in on sax duty, and jessie from The Simple Pleasure volunteered to play viola at any gig she was at. in DC, we had a combination of people from the opening bands, a couple of horn players who were strict volunteers, and three string players from Classical Revolution who also volunteered their time.

PREVIOUSLY: Amanda Palmer played Webster Hall, playing Terminal 5 on New Year's Eve (setlist, video & updated dates)

According to her breakdown of where the 1.2 million went for her 100k project, she skimmed a quarter million off the top for 8 m

Its very important to me to know whether Amanda palmers clarinet player is paid or a volunteer. VERY important. Thanks for sharing this.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:42 AM

According to her breakdown of where the 1.2 million went for her 100k project, she skimmed a quarter million off the top for eight months of previous expenses. $31,250 a month. That must've been nice.

this chick fucking sucks

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:09 AM

again??? seriously i really dont think anyone cares about what this artist says or does. who the hell cares?

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:14 AM

I couldn't even imagine how many animals I could liberate in a month with $31,250
string players using cat guts are bloodmouths.

BV: PLEASE STOP COVERING THIS MEDIA WHORE. SHE IS NOTHING.

Palmer projected spending 45K of the 1.2 million for some painted turntables, but according to kickstarter, she has sold 38, not the 100 that she projected selling.

Does that mean that there's roughly 25K available to pay musicians?

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 6:33 AM

She must be giving some of that dough to BV. That would explain all of this coverage that no one wants.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 7:27 AM

Not even sure who this b.b is

Amanda Palmer addresses volunteer musician issue in a swimming pool full of money...

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 8:10 AM

Who would volunteer?
Some fame-obsessed naive person?
What a bunch of shit.

Please just STOP

Name 1 song of hers. Just one. NOBODY CARES!

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 8:45 AM

^ I remember a Dresden Dolls song called 'Girl Anachronism' - I saw the video for it once on mtv,

I guess people who donated money to her so she could make her album care about her? I don't really get this - she asked for donations so she could make an album and go on tour...to make money for herself? Isn't her husband loaded anyway, people still buy Sandman and the wrestler Raven used to wear a Sandman shirt (and would, coincidentally, wrestle the Sandman!) Assume the position!

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 9:15 AM

If you play for free for this woman you are undermining all musicians trying to make a living.

priceless albini quote
"I have no fundamental problem with either asking your fans to pay you to make your record or go on tour or play for free in your band or gather at a mud pit downstate and sell meth and blowjobs to each other. I wouldn't stoop to doing any of them myself, but horses for courses. The reason I don't appeal to other people in this manner is that all those things can easily pay for themselves, and I value self-sufficiency and independence, even (or especially) from an audience.

If your position is that you aren't able to figure out how to do that, that you are forced by your ignorance into pleading for donations and charity work, you are then publicly admitting you are an idiot, and demonstrably not as good at your profession as Jandek, Moondog, GG Allin, every band ever to go on tour without a slush fund or the kids who play on buckets downtown.

Pretty much everybody on earth has a threshold for how much to indulge an idiot who doesn't know how to conduct herself, and I think Ms Palmer has found her audience's threshold."

Interesting issues are raised here, after I followed the link and checked out the letters at length. Not easy to answer, the question of united workers vs. the anarchic nature of getting together and playing music. Thanks for the post.

BTW, the quotient on this site's comments section of obnoxious, immature flame-throwing assholes is much too large, and makes the site almost too painful to turn to on a daily basis. Ever think about moderating the comments section? Or just cutting the comments section? What do we gain from the Brooklyn Vegan comments section? How to fill up a bag with dogshit and then set it on fire on someone's doorstep?

Posted by Eric | September 14, 2012 10:59 AM

there were cities like new york where jherek - and everyone in the band - really wanted to make sure we had a 100% tried-and-true string corps.

in other words: the small markets we couldn't give less of a fuck about should be psyched to have a kinda shitty concert experience.

what a cunt.

My idea of hell is being surrounded for eternity by the men who read and post comments on brooklyn vegan. I am constantly astounded by the grotesque vile garbage that litters these pages. The people who run BV should pull their heads out of their asses and either censor wildly or enforce people to sign in. The misogyny is one thing, but the actual stupidity of most of the people writing here actually makes ME feel embarrassed to be a human who knows about BV. Its gross. Get a clue BV.

11:24 - Why did you capitalize "ME"? Are you saying that there's some special connection between you and BV that anyone else here should be aware of, or are you simply not as intelligent or as adept at expressing yourself as you think you are?

Posted by dumb BV commenter | September 14, 2012 11:37 AM

I've found it to be nearly universally true that when someone has nothing to add to a conversation that their next action involves criticizing or cutting down those involved in the conversation. Or making a joke about hummus, depending.

"immature flame-throwing assholes...makes the site almost too painful to turn to on a daily basis"

You know that you can simply not read the comments section, right?

Anonymous BV trolls vs. Sanctimonious butthurt readers will headline UFC 156 in January 2013.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:06 PM

Seems pretty obvious that the people who are upset with what 11:24 posted are the trolls who constantly parade around here with the the same ungodly repetitive and unfunny comments.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:06 PM

^It seems Amanda Palmer herself is commenting, and perhaps the "girls with mustaches" comment really pissed her off?

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:09 PM

I posted that, actually. I'm also a guy, and not even vaguely familiar with the girls music. Just thought the story was interesting. But don't let me deter you from your biting wit and commentary any further. Please continue to anonymously post your hilarious one liners for all to see.

Serious question though, you don't seem to like any of the music posted on this website, why do you waste your time here?

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:14 PM

go away lady.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:18 PM

I think that it is morally objectionable for someone to raise +$1M and then pick up volunteer musicians to perform where they make even more money. Then again, that sounds like Scientology in microcosm right there as well.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:19 PM

12:14 = iPods and Lin.sani.ty guy
prove that I'm wrong

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:20 PM

Let's put aside the impossible math surrounding her blown $1.2M.

Amanda's husband Neil has an estimated net worth ~$20 Million and charges minimum $45K per speaking engagement.

I would never suggest that he should be bankrolling his wife's career, but she's the one openly sniping about $35K for a fleet of musicians over a whole tour, in total.

Countless indie rock acts in recent years have pulled off MUCH smaller, lower-budget tours with string & horn sections.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:27 PM

^ Waaaaait a minute: A serious attempt at making an intelligent argument that doesn't include a moronic insult repeated ad nauseum, racial epithet, or overt right wing garbage?

You should know better than to post something like here at Brooklyn Vegan!

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 12:34 PM

Let's get back to business here:

A) Amanda Palmer should seriously be ashamed of herself. Blow $1.2M and crowd source musicians? Come on.

B) Everyone on this thread who claims to hate BV postings because they aren't classy enough... fuck off you worthless cunts.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:04 PM

whoever has supported this cunt is an idiot

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:35 PM

Sounds like commie stuff to me..

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:35 PM

she spent the $1.2 million repeatedly waxing and threading her eyebrows. it takes a lot of work to never have a single hair above one's eyes.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 1:44 PM

12:34, dude...just give it a rest already, we get it, comments here are shitty, it's part of this site's 'charm'

12:27, why would you never suggest that? She's his wife, his spouse has this desire to perform and if she can't fund the performance herself (or get backing to do so from investors, etc) then what is wrong with him doing it? If my wife had some dream and I could easily afford it, I would fund it

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 2:09 PM

"overt right wing garbage"

please let's nobody tell this guy how much of a douche he is. just let him sleep, right there .......

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 2:19 PM

She does not address why she can't spend 35k on a string section. She's delusional. It's about 'freedom' so long as it's about feeding her ego.

I did/do like the first Dresden Dolls album and saw them at Knitting Factory with Sleepytime Guerilla Museum many years ago. I had no clue back then I was supporting the creation of this weird diva-monster.

I think she's gonna take the reigns from Courtney Love as hated, attention seeking, hypocritical rock creature that won't go away.

Not sure if this is relevent to the debate here, but I spent about 1.2 million on hummus in the past year.

Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2012 6:32 PM

Does anyone here really think EVERY band touring through New York doesn't put more effort into that show?
