The Make-Up / Godspeed at ATP NY, 9/23/2012
The Make-Up
Godspeed You! Black Emperor

The festival's best music tried to knock you off your equilibrium. This happened most often on Sunday. The Psychic Paramount got levitating within a few minutes; Benjamin John Power, also known as the English one-man laptop-electronics project Blanck Mass, produced layers of drone, with twinkling rising tones inside of melodic cycles, at fantastic, physically massaging levels of volume; Thee Oh Sees, from San Francisco, played its revved, mutated, scurfed-out garage-rock, controlled and stretched at will by the singer, guitarist and bandleader John Dwyer, who has an intense relationship with his wide-range voice and his gear. (They're not getting rich, but a tighter rock band you will rarely see.) And Godspeed You! Black Emperor played its three-guitar, two-drummer, one-violin electric dirges for two hours -- repeating vamps, clobbering dynamics, in front of film loops of urban decay and antiwar demonstrations. It's powerful, until it's grandiose. - [NY Times]

Cool how Autolux got Kim Deal to loose weight and play drums for them.

Philip Glass is looking more like Lou Reed every day.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 11:41 AM

Ummm, that IS Lou Reed!

That's all the pics? meh

"That's all the pics? meh"

I was thinking the opposite: finally, a post with the right amount of pics per band. Needs more bands, but no stupid endless pictures like BV has done in the past.

So Afghan Whigs headline Day 2, and Dulli curates the event, and they are joined by Marcie Mays for a song that they never do live, and KILLED their set .... and not a single pic of them?

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 12:09 PM

The Make-Up killed. Fun times.

this was awesom

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 12:38 PM

Far from awesome. Disaster more like it.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 1:05 PM

But how can you even take serious a schmuck who says a band "killed". You just have to dismiss them right away for pure stupidity.

I actually thought to myself during the Make-Up's set that Canty looks like an Irish cop. Picturing a cop playing those songs made it an extra entertaining set.

1:06 = the biggest schmuck ever to live, maybe in the history of the entire universe (definitely of Earth), and makes a dog's ass look like KBK by comparison.

Yup, Schmucky, you fail! :-) Have a nice day.

if you were actually there and didnt have fun and thought it was a disaster could you explain why? everyone i was there with had a really good time even though the venue wasnt as great as past atps.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 2:38 PM

1:05 is just a troll.

Even a mediocre ATP is better than any other festival.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 2:57 PM

Agreed. Pretty sure 1:05 didn't go or he'd explain with specifics.

I went. I had fun. I'll be back if it returns next year.

I love Angry ATP Fan (1:33 and every other pro-ATP post), great fake character.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 5:27 PM

1:33 has to be the same poor simpleton who was angrily complaining in threads for days that there was no coverage yet of this show. His life depended on it being covered here so he could tell everyone how amazing he thought it was and scream at the ones who thought different.

I pity this person

Unfortunately, it's always this bad. Worst part is that the loser has conversations with himself. See above.

I love these pictures.
