Refused / Warpaint / Sleigh Bells, FYF Fest 9/1/2012

...Next came the great Warpaint / Hot Snakes / Chromatics dilemma of 2012. We love Hot Snakes, but with not-to-be missed hardcore Refused closing the evening, we needed something cerebral. The ninth annual FYF Fest happened in Los Angeles with an incredibly stacked line-up that included M83, Warpaint, The Vaselines, Sleigh Bells, Fucked Up, The Men, Redd Kross, Refused, Chromatics, Cloud Nothings and loads more. And that was just the first day. Pictures of those bands and more from Saturday (9/1) are below. We picked Warpaint, and it made all the difference. The Angeleno quartet packed the main stage area to an earnestly mind-blowing set. No joke. Stella Mozgawa's metronomically perfect drumming is infused with the right amount of personality and swagger. To say nothing of the occasionally ethereal vocals and sonically interdimensional floating guitar licks. On top of the brain high, the all-lady act Warpaint drives a bit of a body-moving groove. If it weren't for the, er, gopher pockmarked ground, we might have just laid down and vibed out or whatever. Enough people did anyways... -[LA Weekly]

Stopped reading when you said you chose Warpaint over Hot Snakes.

"Stopped reading when you said you chose Warpaint over Hot Snakes."
I agree 1000%
I went to the fest. Pretty good really. Hot Snakes kiled as always. They played "Golden Brown". Quicksand were good, but not great.

Refused are just pure shite. The never ending cash grab.

11:06 quicksand good? every one is entitled to their own opinion, but I thought they were great. They seemed really into it, and sounded fucking awesome. I agree, Hot snakes killed it and sounded great too. American Nightmare sounded like shit and their "fans" were embarrassing, left to go see twin shadow. fucked up didn't sound very good either, but I think that stage was a bit too big for their britches

2:07, I went primarily for Quicksand. Everything else was an added bonus. The band sounded good, Walter's voice was great, but he just looked stoned the entire time. Very little movement except for the occasional spastic dance. Too much idle time between songs. Glad I went, never thought I would hear these songs again live, but it wasn't amazing. Gorilla Biscuits reunion was insane, but that's because Civ is a frontman. Hot Snakes reunion has also been great (my third time seeing the reunion). Quicksand was good, that's all.

3:12, I hear ya, I drove 6 hours just to see quicksand, maybe the anticipation made me think they were great, I dunno, but I was impressed. Last time I saw them was in 1995 when they opened for the offspring and I thought they sounded just as good now as they did then. I will say they seemed to lack the same intensity as in the 90's, but that's to be expected, and regardless, they sounded so good. I definitely agree with you about Walter looking stoned as hell...... Tom capone seemed really into it, actually, so did the rest of the band. Needless to say, it was worth the drive and admission.

Ha, I also live 6 hours ago. NorCal?
BTW, the "pit" was somewhat silly for Quicksand. Everyone got excited during the first song and then that was it. A big hole for the rest of the set. Sergio and Tom seemed the most into it.
I was caught off guard when they were fussing around with Alan's drums for a couple of minutes and then he went into the drum intro of "Thorn in My Side". I thought he was just testing it out.
