Jack White

Jack White came to NYC for his first of two Radio City shows last night (9/29), during which he left the stage after about a 40-50 minute set and never returned for an encore...

Jack White is playing a pair of shows at Radio City Music Hall this weekend and last night's sold out concert was short on songs and long on drama. The former White Stripes frontman abruptly left the stage after an hour prompting a crowd of irate fans to take to the streets.

...

Mr. White's show began with a rollicking set featuring songs from his recent solo album, Blunderbuss, and tracks from his bands; The White Stripes, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. From our seat in the nosebleeds, it seemed as though Mr. White's music was enthusiastically received by the crowd. However, after about forty-five minutes, Mr. White suddenly left the stage.

Thinking this was the standard concert tease that often occurs prior to an encore, the vast majority of the audience remained, clapping and cheering in an effort to encourage Mr. White to retake the stage. After over twenty minutes, all of the house lights were turned on and ushers began to make their way through the crowd informing them the show was finished.

"The show is over. We don't know why. You'll probably find out on a blog, MediaTakeOut or some other source," one said. [Observer]

No real answer has been given as to why he ended the set so quickly, but audience members have speculated it may have been due to Jack's discontent with the audience and the sound. During the show, Jack criticized the crowd, asking, "Jesus Christ, is this an NPR convention?" and another person in attendance tweeted, "Mystery solved: Security guy @ Radio City said Jack White "wasn't happy with the sound I don't know why he pulled that" #JackWhiteDebacle." It's also been speculated that it had something to do with Jack being angry at the amount of scalpers who bought tickets. After the show, angry fans gathered in the lobby and outside the venue chanting things like "Fuck Jack White!" and causing security to put up barricades and contain the crowds.

Hopefully things go over better at his second show at the venue tonight (9/30).

UPDATE: Things did go better.

Like last night's show, tonight's is sold out. To see what Jack did play before leaving, his 12-song setlist from last night is below.

Jack White is blaming the acoustics for making him sound bad? Thats like someone blaming the sun for making them look ugly

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:05 PM

Even when we're headlining we're pretty lucky to get a full 45 minute set in NYC.

see, animal collective IS better

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:10 PM

Radio City has some of the best acoustics in the world.. His fans definitely deserve an explanation for him walking off the stage. That is completely unacceptable at such a high level of artistry and professionalism.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:17 PM

What time did he go on last night?

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:18 PM

5 minutes before he got off

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:18 PM

Any rock crowd worth two shits would have burned Radio City down after that crap. White was right, all faggots and NPR listeners

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:20 PM

I think he left to go check out the Jay Z show.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:22 PM

saw him Friday at BU and it was easily 1 of the 3 best shows I've seen in my life and I've seen a LOT of music.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:24 PM

Fuck Jack White and his bullshit tantrums.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:26 PM

How long before he enters rehab?

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:29 PM

I hope he cancels tonight that would be awesome and how a rock god should do it

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:29 PM

In any european city a real riot would've broken down, police in riot gear would've been called AND would've beaten by the crowd. In amsterdam the venue would've been severely damaged.
But you kids are the worst generation ever, always succumbing to the police state you call the biggest democracy in the world.

even when Thom Yorke walked off the stage at Newark because some equipment wasn't working to his liking, he took time to cool off and came back out swinging - you should learn something from that Jack White - your audience spent time and money to see you - respect goes both ways! shit happens.....

REFUND!

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:42 PM

Where do you get a refund??

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:43 PM

Yes Thom Yorke wanted to kill Jonny at that Newark show. Did he end the show and not come back??? No, he came back and said shit happens. Now would Jack white ever do this? Of course not because he's a vampire.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:43 PM

$90? WTF?

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:45 PM

anyone who thinks they are getting a refund is a fucking moron

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:46 PM

Goddamnit it: What time did he go on last night?

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:46 PM

11pm

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:48 PM

$90 for 40 minutes of very subpar music (and attitude). The artist has to be on stage for an allotted amount of time per their contract with our good ol friends Bowery Presents. He most certainly was not.

A refund is in order.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:50 PM

White has been a complete fraud from day one, you all got your hummus raped fuckin douchebags!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:50 PM

For those who were there last night, did any of you noticed Jack's mood? Seemed like he was p*ssed off as soon as he got on stage, before anything happened. Whatevs, rock on tonight with La Peacocks!

Posted by Anonymi | September 30, 2012 1:50 PM

Tonight should prove quite interesting. 3rd show this tour, both previous were stellar

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:51 PM

first he played for an hour, then it was 50 mins now its 40??? Get your story straight before you demand a refund that isn't going to happen

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 1:52 PM

I was there he only played for 10 mins it was all one song played together, ok story straight

Posted by Bluejee | September 30, 2012 2:00 PM

good they played for two hours

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 2:00 PM

Blame Jack White for creating (and exploiting) the "NPR Convention" audience. After all, he's the one who continues to rely on that community to support his recent projects. It's fine when they're buying his "vault" subscriptions, tickets, shirts, albums, whatever else he can possibly sell. But, if they don't stand up and act like cavemen at Radio City Music Hall they're not worth the time?

GTFO

Jack White is way too rich and famous to give a shit about a bunch of spoiled New Yorkers

If you still think this guy is a great person after this, you need your head examined.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 3:19 PM

^ LOL the crowd last night was so ass. I had a blast when he did play, and when he didn't come back i was more sad than pissed off. Simply cause i have been waiting years to see him. But new york crowds are some of the wOrst crowds i have ever seen. Too glued to their iphones to get the fuck up and dance!

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 3:23 PM

Yucky.Moz wouldn't be so unprofessional

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 3:40 PM

I didn't go to the show but I know people who did. And they were right up front. Apparently, the immediate known reason that he stormed off was the crowd in the front. There were a large number of your typical NYC concert goers - ultimate scenesters. Rich yuppies who were there just to be there and take photos of each other to post on facebook. He kept telling them to stop and they wouldn't. So he left.

I understand the anger about people like that. They are the worst. They've ruined going to concerts in this town. They are awful people. But you know what? Be a professional about it and keep playing for those who actually want to see you. I was at Springsteen last week, and they were assholes doing this all over. That didn't stop the Boss. Be the Boss, Jack. Shit.

So if that was indeed the reason, he's crazy. If it was a cover for something else, he's still wrong. Either way, bad PR move. He is now another Axl Rose. Then again if you read his own remarks over the years, it's not surprising. He's not well. Poor bastard. Poor rich talented bastard.

I miss Meg.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 3:41 PM

I think 3:23 pegged it. They made several announcements regarding phones, pictures & vids with phones. I wish Jack White would hire me to work crowd security. I would take your phones, stomp on them, and watch you cry about that too.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 3:43 PM

Can't believe peeps didn't riot. LAME.

Jack White is butt hurt because no one in the crowd is actually there is see him? His poor ego. Too many years of believing his own hype

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 4:15 PM

50 minutes of Jack White is better than 120 minutes of anyone else currently touring North America with the exception of Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.

P.S. Album of the Year

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 4:28 PM

I was at the Radio City show last night. First of all, the tix I bought from StubHub didn't work at the door. The seller sold them multiple times. Easy fix, you should only be able to sell hard tix on the secondary market. We had to purchase a second pair of tix at the box office. Buyer beware when using StubHub. My ticket ordeal made the slap in the face that Jack gave us even worse. Indeed, there were plenty of older money people, and a lot of your too cool hipster types making some of the crowd seem lame. That said, there were also plenty of us avid fans who were screaming and singing along. We did not deserve this outcome. I think the not happy with the sound rumor is nonsense because if that's the case, you act professional and play through it for your fans. I know that Jack doesn't believe that the crowd's job is done once they've paid their 2 bits(or $265 for me), and I agree. I understand that playing to a dead crowd can bring you down, but man up and play for the real fans who payed a lot of money to see you. I'm a huge Jack White fan, but I can't help but have a sour taste in my mouth about last night. I'm gonna hold onto my tickets in hopes that Jack somehow makes things right.

Posted by MCosaNYC | September 30, 2012 4:32 PM

How can you guys be mad? Look at the state your cheap ass whoring fucking scene? How can you build up the ego of these pussies like Jack White and not expect them to act like the little bitches they are?

For the people that actually like music, why do you let pathetic hipsters set the trends? Why do you continue to let them pull the balls out of rock music?

i was at the show last night. He ended up going on around 9:15. I was sitting in the orchestra section all the way to the left and the sound was very good (although the vocals were pretty low) and everyone in front of me was standing and some were dancing/grooving/generally into it. I don't think i'm entitled to a set of a certain length or an encore, but i would like an explanation and i hope it's not because there were jerks up front because that's pathetic.

Posted by jkristian | September 30, 2012 4:52 PM

I remember when Eddie Vedder had a bad case of diarrhea at a show in the 90's,and still didnt end it.He played while shitting his pants for 90 minutes. Then asked Neil Young to sub for him with pearl jam while he was at the crapper. That is professionalism and giving fans their moneys worth.Rock stars today are such spoiled divas.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 5:21 PM

If you want to have a rowdy crowd, the best place to play is definitely a three-tiered, fancy, big ass theatre with seats. I love Jack White, but what a fucking dumbass bitch.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 5:26 PM

I bet he does an hour set with each band tonight in an attempt to offset his douchery

"hyper-nyc webster crowd"?

What does this even mean? It's not like going to a show at the already very large Webster Hall gives you any shred of cred.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 6:56 PM

him being mad at those taking pictures is no reason to stop the show

just heard from the radiohead show in berlin that just finished tonight and Thom yelled at security who were trying to stop people from filming the show - this is how you treat your fans

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 7:06 PM

I'm a born and raised New Yorker. I'm a hard working middle class guy who loves rock music. When my favorite artists do shows, me and my friends buy tickets, go to the shows and go fucking nuts. Unfortunately, there are alot of douchey, trendy, hipster, too cool scenesters who go to these shows because it's the place to be. You hate seeing them, but what can you do? But speaking of trendy, it's very trendy to hate on NYC. I still love this city. Everyplace has douchebags. There is no excuse for how Jack acted, but that said, I'll never go to another rock show at Radio City. When I saw Jack at Roseland Ballroom in may, it was fucking great. It was an awesome loud NEW YORK crowd. It's just like the difference between the old Yankee Stadium and the new one. You get alot of rich snobby people getting good seats in places like the New Yankee Stadium and Radio City Music Hall. Roseland Ballroom was a loud and imposing crowd just like the old Yankee Stadium. I'm disappointed at Jack, and a little disappointed at the crowd last night, but those making general blanket statements and stereotyping all New Yorkers can eat a fat one.

Posted by MCosaNYC | September 30, 2012 7:07 PM

If every band walked off the stage because of their douchy NYC crowd, the city would get a collective 5 hours of music over an entire year.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 8:44 PM

I thought Jack and his band were great. They rocked. During the show I thought to myself "I'd pay $100 to see them again". After the show I reconsidered. But I still love his music.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2012 10:29 PM

I've seen Jack w The Dead Weather And at Roseland in May. Maybe he should stick to smaller venues where everyone can sardine up close to him. I thought what he did play was awesome, and I was really upset when the show abruptly ended. We paid $260. For orchestra tickets plus merchandise. I'm really disappointed. Not that we would get refunds or anything but wtf? Grow up Jack, Justin Bieber is going to bury you when he plays at Madison Square. At 18 at least he realizes that his fans make him what he is today. Nice way to fuck us all over for what was supposed to be an awesome night in NY.

Posted by Roxene Morrison | September 30, 2012 10:31 PM

Still only 1:15 minutes tonight. Not as bad as last night, but not comaprable to the average length of the tour or Roseland. First concert I've ever been to where the singer didn't even say one word to the crowd. Love Jack, thought what he played was great, was just hoping to at least get an average length set, especially for a place like Radio City.

Guest relations at Radio City Music Hall: 212-465-6225. They are keeping a list of complaints but have no official response. They will take down your order number and inform you if they decide to issue any refund, but the kind operator Jake G. said he thinks any official response is unlikely. We need to change that by calling them and being persistent. We deserve reimbursement, or at least an apology.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2012 12:41 PM

Call Ticketmaster and demand a full refund at 1-800-653-8000

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2012 1:10 PM

Ticketmaster's response was that they have no responsibility for anything that happens after you scan your ticket for entry to the venue, after that its between you and the venue to resolve any issues. Does anyone know if this is legal/correct? Can't Ticketmaster be held liable as well since they are the authorized ticker broker?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2012 1:16 PM

You will not get a refund. Deal with it.

Three weeks ago, I was pulling better seats for Grizzly Bear than when they first went on sale (by twenty five rows), after multiple phone calls with RCMH in hopes they would have the decency to at least upgrade my tickets, they refused citing that it "was not their fault that the promoter allowed multiple tickets to be returned to the ticket pool." It was utter BS...TM also threw up their arms and pointed at RCMH...who as I said pointed at the promoter...

It is all a shell game, and that is fine, but just don't expect a refund. Unfortunately, live music is still a crapshoot...some nights are better than others, and I hope it stays that way.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2012 1:30 PM

Radio City security said the venue has an agreement with the performer and there will likely be fines. But then does Radio City just keep that money? What about the ticket-holders? Shouldn't the fine be paid to them?

Or better yet, Jack should take a deep breath, realize that his fans are what enable him to run around being a big rock-star, and do a show where a ticket from 9/29 gets you in.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2012 1:34 PM

The promoter has to issue the refunds.

Keep calling!

If people paid $90 a seat to come see me you can be sure I'd feel a great deal of appreciation. I'd bend over backwards to give them the time of their lives, regardless of how I was feeling that day, whether the crowd was responsive enough for my taste, whether there was a heckler in the front row, or whether I was satisfied with the acoustics.

He walked off the stage due to his anger with NYC for getting so fucking gentrified.

Yes I can compare any artists that can get $150 and up for tickets. My reference to Justin Bieber just was to prove a point. Give the fans their money's worth or a refund for the artists ill humor. Why is his bad attitude our problem?Jjack White is my favorite artist and I actually am very sad about this event on Sat night. We came in on the train from CT and I had a friend w me who had never seen him but really liked him. Of course I said " you will not be disappointed"- yea famous last words. I mean really it wasn't like Altamont where someone got stabbed. Take some advice from Mick he's been doin it long time and is still on the fucking work the audience game. How could Jack be so fucking arrogant to screw his fans, doesn't make any sense. And yea, I don't care what anybody says. Bieber is worth more for a reason. I doubt I will ever pay to see Jack perform again, and that really bums me out.

..........this rant reminds me of when I saw Ice T with Bodycount in Portchester years ago. he got pissed at security for not letting kids slam, then he had a hissy fit, stormed off- not to return- after 40 minutes. I couldn't have been very old myself and there was a teenager next to me who whined "I paid $20 dooooollars for this show" waaah----- but it was cute when he said it, cuz he was a teen who pushed a lot of shopping carts for that $20 in the early 90s- not a f'in entitled hipster pissant all butt hurt because his media-idol-fantasized-extension-of-his-complex-hipster-self, let him down. ( and by the way- I do like jack white as a musician, he's not the only talented diva prone to bad behavior out there - deal with it)

I'm laughing at the frowny baby in the picture and all of the people who take him and his band seriously.

The show lasted 49 minutes too long.Have people been brainwashed to the point that egocentric no talents can get by just by having attitude?C'mon folks.he looks like a poor version of Edward Scissorhands but without the cutting edge(pun)It's that kind of mindset that give the Taylor Swifts,Toby Keith, and a whole generation of hacks a foothold in the music business.Think i'm wrong?Watch the Grammy's.
