Mike Love of The Beach Boys at Jones Beach, June 2012 (more by Greg Cristman)
Beach Boys

We knew this was coming, but now, as the Beach Boy's reunion tour comes to its scheduled end in the UK, it's official:

The reunion of founding members of the Beach Boys will not continue beyond this week, according to the band's frontman Mike Love.

Brian Wilson and Al Jardine - both founding members of the legendary Californian pop group - have been told their involvement in the band's touring commitments will cease after this week.

David Marks, who originally joined the band as a replacement for Jardine in 1962, is also to be relieved of his touring duties.

Singer Mike Love, who owns the rights the band's name following a series of legal battles, released a statement which said:

"The post-50th anniversary configuration will not include Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. The 50th Reunion Tour was designed to be a set tour with a beginning and an end to mark a special 50-year milestone for the band." -[Telegraph]

The end of the 50th Reunion Tour happens this week in the UK with Wilson, Marks and Al Jardine in tow. The remaining dates are 9/27 at Royal Albert Hall and 9/28 at Wembley Arena.

They recently toured the US and played Jones Beach, PNC Bank Arts Center, Bonnaroo, and Beacon Theater twice. They also released a new LP  together.

No matter what his contributions to the band were(and they were some great ones) Mike Love will always be a giant piece of shit of a person.

Way to go Mikey boy, just kill all the good will you had built up this year because of whatever financial situation you think is right.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 8:34 PM

if mike love died, would the living members be allowed to tour as 'the beach boys'?

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 9:28 PM

where does this guy get the balls?

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 10:05 PM

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 10:09 PM

Oh, who the fuck cares about these assholes beyond Brian Wilson anymore anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 10:13 PM

Mike Love was a great front man. Flashy and arrogant, I saw this tour three times and was impressed and blown away. But you have to realize Mike Love has always been insanely jealous of the attention Brian got during the Beach Boys tenure. Watch random live videos and the crowds always went nuts for Brian, not Mike. Brian is the Beach Boys - Mike never wanted to accept that.

Why did he can Brian, David, & Al? Because he is a miserable cheap fuck who would rather play Great Adventure than legit venues. Oh, and he is a Republican. Thanks for the memories fellas.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 10:51 PM

This is a misleading an d false headline. Brian , Al and David were not fired for the Beach Boys. The 50th Anniversary Reunion Beach Boys and the Mike and Bruce Touring Beach Boys are two different things entirely. The Reunion was only supposed to go through Wembly and then it was supposed to be over anyway. The 'other' Beach Boys with just Mike and Bruce was never intended to have the other three continuing in it. Therefore no one was 'fired' fro anything. It is two different groups.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 11:32 PM

The Wondermints guys are the important part anyway and I'm sure they'll still be playing with Brian.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2012 11:59 PM

11:32's comment was written by Mike Love or someone close to him.

Go away whoever you are. Yes they were 2 different bands before that because they could not see eye to eye and Love is a piece of dirt. Once they got back together, yes the tour was only scheduled through Wembley but it was not as if they said ok after that it's done. Brian actually wanted to make another full Beach Boys record. The only reason this is happening now is cause Love relies on idiot backers and promoters who tell him stupid things. Like that if he toured again next year with this band, the huge amounts of people would not come cause they would be sick of the "novelty". He would have to charge lesser ticket prices and would end up losing money cause he has to pay out more then he would his Mike Love Beach Boys Band(which has his children in it). The idea being go on tour with his crap version and he will get the base amount of idiot fanatics and know nothings who just want to hear Beach Boys songs. While he can't charge as much, he ends up pocketing more cause he is paying out less.

This is the world of Mike Love. Always has been and always will be.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 12:00 AM

I'm 1:32 and I can assure you that I am not Mike Love or anyone associated with or close to him. I don't know him at all. While I agree with everything in your post about Mike, and I also agree that he is a huge dick....... the fact remains that the reunion tour was a completely different animal than the Mike and Bruce band and as such actually did have a specific agreed upon beginning and ending. there were Mike and Bruce shows leading right up to the reunion tour and there are now Mike and Bruce shows immediately after the reunion is over. That doesn't mean that BRuce, Al and David were fired from the other band because they were never a part of that band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 1:46 AM

If I was in the band, I'd fire all of them.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 1:59 AM

1:32/1:46 well you are actually completely wrong. Yes there was a specific agreed upon beginning and end to THE TOUR not the band line up. They were supposed to continue touring next year. The reason it is not happening is Mike Love's purely delusional financial reasoning.

The post is not misleading and is 100% correct.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:13 AM

Oh and 1:32/1:46, before you go trying to prove you are right by quoting Mike Love's statement let me shoot that nonsense down.

Mike Love is a notorious liar and will say anything to explain his bullshit. Unfortunately for him he is also an idiot. For look what he says further on:

"You've got to be careful not to get overexposed. There are promoters who are interested [in more shows by the reunited line-up], but they've said, 'Give it a rest for a year'. The Eagles found out the hard way when they went out for a second year and wound up selling tickets for $5."

He had every intention of keeping this band lineup intact and continuing. It made him more money than he has made in years and actually put him in somewhat of a better light. Once he got word he would be losing money, then he decided to fire the 3.

When grown men argue anonymously about Mike Love, the terrorists win.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 7:58 AM

Can we go back to arguing about Green Day?

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 8:56 AM

At least they actually made an album unlike Pavement

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 10:02 AM

We all know Mike Love is a dick, but this one isn't his fault. Jardine and Wilson are trying to change the terms of the deal they struck and are using the press to pressure Mike. Who would want to continue working with guys who negotiate through the press?

Here's my take

Posted by Scotty | September 27, 2012 10:19 AM

Here is something to ponder. While Mike is bringing his pathetic 'Beach Boys' on tour for the fall/winter, Brian will be home writing some wonderful rock n' roll tunes. There is no way he will pass up another cash grab come next spring/summer. Don't worry kids, they will be back, meaning the real Beach Boys.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 11:40 AM

2:13/2:23... the 50th anniversary tour and the 50th anniversary line up were one in the same. Yes there was talk of 'another' tour possibly next year, not a 'continuation' of the tour INTO next year. I am not defending Mike because he is a total douchebag, but the contracts and tour riders, and finances and sponsorship and bookings, etc for the reunited band are probably so compeletely different than the touring oldies band then they cannot just immediately continue the reunion indefinately without probably a whole new set of meetings, discussions and deals. Once this tour is finished, the oldies act goes out and does their thing until all that business stuff can be worked out for the 'next' reunion tour, if that ever happens. No one has been fired from anything. calm down everyone.

50th Anniversary Tour Beach Boys/Mike and Bruce Beach Boys Band

Two different bands with two different line ups of both key players and back up musicians. Different venue circuits, most likely different promotors and sponsors, etc.

How can anyone be FIRED from something they were never a part of? Brian, Al and David were NEVER a part of the current MIKE/Bruce touring Beach Boys Band.

The Reunion was a separate thing entirely. Now that it is over, the idiot Mike and his puppet boy Bruce go back to their shtick. Why is this so hard to understand people?

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 11:44 AM

this a non issue. Even if Mike and the rest of them decided to continue unbroken as the reunion line up, how many more shows do you think Brian would last for? At some point he would jump ship anyway because he isn't likely to be able to handle the non stop touring of the Oldies version. Once Brian would leave the tour then the whole thing goes down the drain anyway and you end up with a Brian-less version of somewhat of the original lineup but missing all the Wilsons.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 11:48 AM

Brian shouldn't be touring this hard anyway. his genius is for the studio. every day he spends on the road with someone else's band (i.e. the Mike Love Band) is a day wasted wearing down the batteries he should be saving for songwriting, and occasional Wondermints shows.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 12:21 PM

Mike Hate

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 12:43 PM

Brian suffered a lot of back pain for the majority of the tour. It was an absolute gift that he was part of the anniversary tour. He actually just got multiple back surgeries and has stated that he never felt better

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 1:40 PM

IF the reunited lineup decided to stay together, it's not like they would be continuously touring between now and next summer. They would probably take a break before re-grouping for another tour in a year or two. That's what MOST REAL BANDS do. Most real bands do not play no stop forever. THAT is what an oldies act does.... which is where the MIke/Bruce BeachBoys come in. Even if the real band decided to stay together, there would be down time at some point. IF not right now, then certainly soon. Not to defend Mike, but The 'other Beach Boys stepping in to fill the time on the oldies circuit does not seem that strange or questionable.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 1:52 PM

Question - If the Beach Boys (w/ Brian Wilson) would tour and would play two full albums worth of material, what albums would you like to hear?
Personally, I would go for Surf's Up & 20/20.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:10 PM

Pet Sounds/Smile easy.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:33 PM

Mike preferring to tour with HIS band over the Reunited group with Brian's band is not surprising at all. This way the prick has complete control unlike with the original lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:36 PM

Mike's ego is WAY bigger than his talent.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:36 PM

MIke is only able to pull this kind of control shit because of how messed up Brian is. If Brian was normal, Mike wouldn't be able to pull any of this.

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:37 PM

and so the California Saga continues.....

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 2:38 PM

Time to call Blondie Chaplin & Ricky Fataar!

Posted by Anonymous | September 27, 2012 3:41 PM

Nice to see 90% of the people making comments on this thread with zero inside clue of how this band operates and what the situation actually was. That includes Scott and his wrong analysis.

Who ate my hummus?

Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2012 12:58 AM

This is a dysfunctional group, this comes as no surprise.

Posted by Anonymous | September 28, 2012 10:47 AM

Brian Wilson is a pop artist, Mike Love is a pop entertainer, simple as that, and this tension always caused it. It is a shame though that Love doesn't want to approach it as a return to being taken seriously - a huge jump up to once again being one of the most lauded bands in history, with a present and even a future, as opposed to an oldies act with one original member and a pick up band trudging out the old songbook for Six Flags, Casinos, County Fairs, and corporate parties. It is his right, technically to do this, but what a shame.

Guess who is going to join the lame "Beach Boys" with Love and Johnston for their show in Biloxi next week?
For real - JOHN STAMOS!
Jesus. no clue.

Good thing for me I love the Ramones endlessly and I really enjoy the music of the Smiths, so I get out of this infantile anti-social behavior unscathed.
